Is there something wrong with American education?

When articles about the Thai education system appear on this website, the stories are followed by mockery and worse. However, the article below suggests that American members ought to think twice before commenting.

Typical lying America bashing. The article doesnt say what you imply and you are therefore a liar.

The issue was that consumers allegedly thought that Lays were the same as Pringles et all. Flaked and formed.

PS: I dont defend American education by any means.

YouTube is full of video interviews of people believing (wrongly) their country invented motorcars, or who think Europe is a country. I tend not to tar a whole nation as stupid as a result.

Is that because you are a product of said Education System?

By and large, education systems and, in particular, teachers, are not the source of the problem(s).

Parental support, aspirations, encouragement lie at the heart of any real success.

I had my Doctorate by 1981, after elementary and hs education with no AI, no internet, no DEI, no phonics, foreign language required (Spanish for me) and a HS curriculum that included the Federalist papers, Moby Dick and Shakespear as well as auto shop, home ec and welding. We had a HS rifle team. In 1968, we were educated in Marxism as it was on the street and the Cold war was in full force. We did bombing drills when I was a child. So we had to study Das Kapital etc.

University required another language (Russian).

I dont think they educate kids as well in the USA anymore. They dont even teach them to write.

Thats why modern youth has such a percentage of uneducated, slacking idiots

US education is very America centric.  You are supposed to memorize all 50 states (and their capital cities), but not taught anything about the rest of the world.

As the internet has now made this world into a global society, I think that needs to change immediately, with much more emphasis on where USA is, in comparison with the other 200 or so countries dotted around the globe.

I think they try, but times have changed and kids are not what they used to be. Kids stay up all night on their cell phones and then their brains are fried the next day. Many play on their phones in the classroom. Students can have high absentee rates and not do any work all year long, and are still passed on to the next grade level. We don't want to hurt their feelings or make them socially maladjusted.

Teachers have less authority than before. Kids are often given 10-12 chances regarding behavior problems before any serious consequences can be given. Many parents think their kids are little angels and the teacher is the problem. When there's no proof, it's the teacher's word against the kid's word. The student is often given the benefit of the doubt. The list continues...

It is not that they do not teach geography, it is more that it is not retained. Without ever leaving North America. it is hard to keep track of far away places. The scary part is that many Americans cannot identify Mexico and Canada.

I agree 100% on the self awareness issue. There is very little understanding of how wrong the US is about its own importance.

Were you educated in America?

Our states are bigger than your countries

A few videos online aren't a way to judge all the people in a country. Students in Thailand are passed even while failing. That doesn't happen in the US, just for one instance.

Doesn't happen much, anyway. The OP is not about Thai schools though.

Passing failing students happens all the time here, and I was referring to another member's comment.Never seen or heard about it happening in the US.

Absolutley

Many USA school districts have policies that prevent teachers from giving scores of lower than 60% on any assignment, even if the assignment was never completed or turned in. Districts have 'social promotions' for students who should fail, but are passed on because it is determined that making the student repeat that grade level would not help the student succeed.

Students who do 'technically fail' are given opportunities to make up credits for the entire year by attending summer school for a few weeks, a few hours a day, with low expectations. Failing students going from middle school to high school are sometimes denied the privilege of attending the promotion/graduation ceremony, where they walk across the stage and receive a diploma, but are quietly passed up to the next rung of the ladder. School districts can be very creative when they want to.

Yes, I myself went to summer school two times because I goofed off during certain classes. I've had 5 children through the Texas school system and they were always vocal with the parents when a student wasn't doing well. I was also in three different schools including a Catholic school who never passed anyone failing, and they did the summer school if they wanted to pass. More homework, help in the classes, asking parents for help etc. It's quite different here. Teachers aren't out to help most students unless prodded, and many are failing but will still pass without any extra help or summer school.
