Volodymyr Zelensky has secured a deal with Sweden for up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets, strengthening Ukraine's military capabilities. The Ukrainian President met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Linkoping, home to the defense company Saab, which manufactures the jets. The agreement marks a significant move to boost Ukraine's fleet, which includes Mirage 2000 and F-16 jets, amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

President Zelensky confirmed Ukraine's intent to purchase at least 100 Gripens, aiming for deliveries to begin next year. He stressed the importance of the Gripen fighters, describing them as among the best globally. Ukrainian pilots have already commenced training on these Swedish jets.

Prime Minister Kristersson highlighted Sweden's commitment to supporting Ukraine, affirming potential deliveries within the next three years, despite current early production stages. Sweden has consistently backed Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, providing tanks, artillery, and reconnaissance planes, emphasizing a strategic partnership against Russian aggression.

Who's going to pay for those 150 Gripen ?

The dumb euros ?

Financial arrangement has not been stitched. That’s the type of cooperation and commitment from European allies to arm Ukraine. Must come as a surprise for you who is used to Trump’s transactional and bullying style. Ukraine not buying F16 is direct snub at Trump. This is the largest aircraft’s bought by Ukraine and will rattle Putin senseless air strikes and help in Ukraine air defense.

Disaster for Russia? I remember this being said about the abrams and the F16s. Russia now has FAB's with motors that reportadly have a flight distance of 200km. This means for the most part the SU 34's will be able to hang back a lot further meaning any aircraft trying to take out the SU's will need to be closer to Russian air defence systems.

I doubt India agrees with that after losing 4 to a single Chinese made plane in the fight with Pakistan.

Wunderwaffles for the winning!

So, ummm..........any F-16's left?

I'd characterize it as another disaster for Ukrainians.

Just enough support to perpetuate the killing and dying.  Nowhere near enough for a Ukrainian victory.  That would take NATO boots on the ground and the risk of WW3 and Armageddon.

The question is, will Ukraine run out of military age conscripts before Putin runs out of whatever is motivating him?

Russia ran out of military age conscripts ages ago, they are now using volunteers and mobilizing citizens

India has never had any Gripen planes.

Spot on. This is what the top ranking officer in the British Army has to say.

Ukraine cannot win against Russia, warns British Field Marshal

Field Marshal Lord Richards tells The Independent’s Sam Kiley that Ukraine has been given false hope by its Western allies and cannot triumph against Russia unless Nato forces join fight.

Ukraine cannot win its war with Russia and should negotiate peace terms with the Kremlin, according to Britain’s most senior army officer.

Field Marshal Lord Richards said Kyiv will not be able to drive Vladimir Putin’s soldiers out of Ukraine without the help of Nato forces – who won’t get involved on the ground.

Lord Richards, who was promoted to the UK military’s most senior “five-star” rank earlier this year and led Nato forces during their troop surge in Afghanistan, said Ukraine’s allies have failed Kyiv.

“What we have done in the case of Ukraine is encourage Ukraine to fight, but not given them the means to win,” the former chief of the defence staff told The Independent’s podcast World of Trouble.

Ah that most reliable source "the news." The same news I guess that said Russia is using washing machine parts and fighting with shovels. The same news that says Russia's on it's knees but at the same time is a threat to Europe. That news.

Doesn't anybody know, over there, that DRONES are the Goat, these days?

Interesting. I get the thumbs down for posting what a British Field Marshal says about the situation in Ukraine. I guess the person who gave my post the thumbs down knows more. I suggest you contact Field Marshal Lord Richards and share your insights.

And who's going to fly the Gripens?

Full conversion training for experienced pilots (like Ukraine's, who fly MiG-29s/Su-27s) is "twice as fast" as for F-16s, typically 11 weeks (about 3 months) with 50 flights per pilot for basic operations (this according to Saab).

Then for Squadron-level exercises, live-fire, and integration into Ukrainian command (e.g., SEAD missions) a realistic (Combat-Ready Squadron) takes 3-6 months. All this gets 10-20 jets operational...

It's also difficult to get any accurate info but fighter pilots are the scarcest resource, with heavy losses (~50-60 confirmed since 2022, including 3 F-16 pilots by mid-2025). Pre-war strength was ~100-150 qualified fighter pilots; current estimates account for training surges.

Gripens does not look a game changer...  F16s have not achieved that either.

The scariest thing about this news is that the jets will take years before they can make a difference on the battlefield.  Meaning that someone is expecting (hoping?) this thing will drag on for even more years.  And more dead young people.

Sadly there are still some on here oblivious to the reality that Russia is winning the ground war. This isn't cheering Putin it's abject reality. These jets will make little difference to this fact. One one Russias key weapons are the FAB's and as I said above they are now producing these cheap and numerous glide bombs with cheap jet powered engines. The only way to stop these being delivered is to take out the SU 34's which will risk putting the gryphons in the firing line. Same is the case for the F16's.

“FAB-500T bomb with UMPK [meaning unified gliding and correction module] and a jet engine, flying at a range of over 150–200 kilometers.”

We need Putin dead or removed for young people on both sides to stop dying.

I am 100% sure about it. Russia is a personalist dictatorship. Most people of Russia are really tired of Putin and his war. Especially the younger generation.

Commenting on any news article or issue without the obligatory insult to Trump, the USA, Trump voters or Israel is alien to you.

No Putin would  mean a power vacuum and a destabilised Russia, which would be worse. There is no democratic tradition in Russia, and the reality is that someone even more hardline could succeed him.

Excellent analysis. When you get down to it, with all the talks about planes and airpower, the only two Air Forces in the world are ours and Israels, which basicaly are ours too. All the rest are just holes to throw money in.
