Why choose Cambodia?

Regarding the visa, we all have to go through it, and so far, I´ve had no problems with it. What the government and other authorities do, I´ve very little to do with.

Again, its just a minus on the plus minus chart. Same with their government, it has very little to do with you but its the general air that it despises you, among other flaws.

Trust me I would love to be back in Bangkok. But one outgrows the big city. Next best is to be in a no hassle place where you can go to the big city in short doses.

You forgot to mention the 800k requirement in a Thai bank account sitting there doing nothing.  Basically dead money you can't touch.  It costs around 12,500 baht doing it through an agent to try avoid that.

I have money doing nothing in many bank accounts. Not everyone needs to Scrabble around for every dollar.

I had to beat them off with a poopy stick. Not only Siem Reap, but PP.

So Bangkok is the only option in Thailand? A strange suggestion. I cannot follow your line of reasoning.

Few anywhere, with exceptions, are subject to the constraints of poverty.   I didn't have to work for minimum wage in the USA.  I didn't have to be an employee all the time in the USA.

Most people live in poverty, because they choose to.   I don't know anyone, that failed at bettering their position in life, USA or TH, that tried to.  It takes time and hard work, unless lucky, and sadly, many don't want to put in that time and work.

Oh well, that's on them, and the life they chose.

Americans live in poverty because of missing fathers and that paycheck, high housing costs, low wages not keeping up with the cost of living, high healthcare costs, and more. It's not a choice for many but a reality. Hard work isn't how most get rich. High population and competition for higher paying jobs also has many making less then they're worth.

Some people believe that because through broke through, that option is available to everyone. They'll tell it to everyone that listens and don't realise how it makes them look.

Yeah, there is an individual solution for all. My choice has been to build a house with all what we need in Isaan and also can take trips to bigger cities now and then. It´s a perfect solution for me, my wife and our kids. Affordable private schooling, compared to Bangkok and bigger cities, with acceptable quality of teaching. In close proximity to her mother father and home village, but still 40 km. Nice garden, swimming pool. Can take the car whenever we, or I, want and go for a trip. Also run shop and restaurant, so need to take trips for buy what we need, that is not available in the smaller cities. So, life is great!

I dont do anything, it is rancid.... All of it.

Forbidden in my house, if the gf want to eat, she goes out.

Take veggies, meat or fish and spices, add a little oil, and you have a healthy meal. Cooking at home and in vetted restaurants won't have you eating rancid food. It's the same as all Asian food besides the spices and sauces, all of which can be very healthy if you know how to cook that way.

If parking 38k USD in a Thai bank is a burden to you after retirement... you have made poor life choices.

Forget about it. Do you think he's going to suddenly change because you say so? We all know what he is writing is limited.

Most people living in poverty are uneducated, stupid, lazy, or have mental illness.

I can think of 100 ways to make significant money wherever I am.

It seems that you have a bee in your bonnet. Of course I am here commenting. The thread is about Why Cambodia...? So I read and make comments. Is that not normal?

I don't have a Thai wife/GF and I don't consort with prostitutes, so I could not reply in earnest to his question as to whether they are the same thing. I guessed they weren't. But you seem to be suggesting that they are.

If you really take the time to read, before commenting, you would have understood the difference between situations. I took an example of one. Besides that, there are many who do not marry a prostitute. So, neither is written in stone, as it has two different sides.

That's still a lot of people. Don't be so unpleasant.

Again, direct your reply to @Yagoda I have no connection to the things that he asked, neither do I have any interest in the things that he asked. Hence, my redirection to someone with knowledge of the situation. I hope that makes it clear.

It seems to be taking a long time to get through to you.

They are correlations to poverty but not an end all. Many aren't receiving enough pay to keep up with inflation, especially where kids are involved. Many are in single parent families because those dads aren't available, which has them living on one paycheck. The US is expensive, especially when you have children. Laziness doesn't help of course but it's not most of them in poverty. Many well educated are living in poverty because they can't find suitable jobs after their education finished..............https://www.nccaa.net/post/myth-people-in-poverty-are-uneducated-if-they-just-went-to-college-they-wouldn-t-be-poor

What does that have to do with anything?

Who suggested that?

That's why I help people to have a better life. Because I can. Though not ever through exploitation.

A beautiful read .... fascinating.... interesting CAMBODIA !!!!!.

My story> Been in Thailand since 1985
been going to Cambodia since 88 ( illegally till 90)   just to the area around Pailin) for gems
than legally 1st trip in 2006
Moved there for a year in 2008, lived/worked in PP
back to Thailand till we ( i've got a khmer wife) moved over in 2021 and built a house in Kep
Last 17 months, now back in Phuket<

Cambodia is different than Thailand and anyone that says its like Thailand was has not been to Thailand in in the 80/90's
ITS NOT

Cambodia was lawless back till around 2012, than... then, malls started, roads got worse, the people got greedy, the rich got richer and the poor poorer
Khmers are not like the thai's
the food sucks compared to Thai, they have a few dishes but.....
for 90% of things its more experience than Thailand and the quality of local goods is inferior as well
health care, inferior by far
visa ( no money in Bank ) $290-300/year
VS  15,000-17,000 baht ($415- 425) no money in bank, using an agent
If ur a cheap charlie an love ur $1.00 beers, than Cambodia is better

Many seem to say the people are more friendly, i dont find that at all, if ur smiling and friendly, people are people everywhere

My 1 baht take.....
and yes I prefer Thailand

Exactly. I have been thinking hard about Nong Khai because of the ease of getting to Bangkok and I have friends in VN, but in order to take advantage of living there I have to do the whole Visa thing AND get a car or at least a scooter.

Ive been thinking Ayyuthaya too only because I know there is tuktuk transit everywhere.

But the freaking Immigration.....the tax rules, reportss, fees, the oppressive atmosphere...
