We don't realize how blessed we all are. The Prime Minister himself is paying his undivided attention to the issue:

- Thais do not care and alcohol is freely bought and consumed 24/ (at least on the countryside)
- except bigger supermarkets not a single vendor seriously sticks to this ridiculous regulation 
- non-Thais can be held at ransom or face the music as far as a juicy fine of 10,000 Baht is concerned 

And now the semi-divine see the need to "explain" their clownery as neither Thais and certainly not the non-Thais understand, what all this is about. 

Another nail in the tourism coffer - congratulations, keep up the good work!

We were informed by the previous government that between 2 - 5pm it was legally allowed to serve alcohol  in tourist areas for restaurants, hotels, bars & airports. 

This is your new government, create as much confusion over the alcohol laws which is a convenient diversion from the cannibas laws. 

 

You just cannot fix stupid can you!

This will disappear into the long grass in the same way that taxing foreigners on their overseas income has been quietly dropped.  There is no possible scenario where someone having his lunch at 14.05 with a drop beer in his glass will be fined 10,000 baht.

Imagine being a potential tourist and reading an article like this. Most are just going to stay away.

You may well be correct but any responsible intelligent government would not make these senseless statements & changes to laws. It is an indication of their level of ability to govern a nation!

For goodness sake were in the 21st Century are these people sleep walking  I have never understood the reasoning behind the alcohol laws in Thailand they are totally outdated as are those that make these rules .At 74 years young my consumption of alcohol is minimal however I don’t want to be told when I can and cannot have a drink it’s absurd 

I wonder where the minister for tourism and TAT are hiding given they would have either been fore warned or been present in these brainless discussions!

(A not-unrelated anecdote: A few months back my b/f and I were shouting a cousin to lunch in a restaurant in Surin. He has been around within Thailand - travels frequently - and has lived in Bangkok. When the serving girl brought an extra knife & fork to the table - a polite gesture for ignorant Farang, though not required - Gop picked up the knife, stared at it in astonishment and said: What's this for? I then proceeded to demonstrate how one could cut one's meat and eat off a fork as opposed to a spoon. His amazement was equalled by mine.)

One of my Thai wife's relatives is like that. We took him to an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet and it was a total waste of money. He only ate noodles. It was just too far out of his element for him to be comfortable.

Countdown on Walking street and many others  is going to be quiet this year

It impacts more than restaurants. About time they got a grip on what tourists want being as a lot of people depend on them for revenue. It impacts any premises selling alcohol. People are enjoying an afternoon drink in a bar . And then the police come along and fine them. Oh that goes down really well with anyone not just tourists. My wife and I have been operating restaurants in Thailand for 16 years and I have never seen it so quiet. It's not even worth turning the lights on most nights. And then the morons s come up with this B$ . I really don't blame people choosing Vietnam of this pathetic country

The only confusing part, is those who do not understand there is no consistent practice around rules in Thailand on daily basis. 

 

The disappointment when some places brake the rules and other do not is the common problem. The rules and law is clear

 

 

No one here has focused on the fact that they intend to fine the consumer up to 10k and not the seller??. Apart from these ridiculous closing times that fine idea really  gets my back up. That is the most irritating and stupid idea even for Thailand. Here in Au as an example, if a bottle shop sells liquor to a minor (under 18 years old) the the seller gets full blame and  a big fine. Which is the most logical law. Oh forgot this is Thailand where their motto is , "Always find a way to fine the novice tourist" who would have no idea such a law exists".

I think that businesses hve to take a tougher stance coe back from lunch late or come backwith beer on your breathe youre fired.

Currently under discussion is the idea of moving the New Year to 11pm......this will allow people to drink and celebrate for an hour without facing a 10,000 baht fine.
