Bangkok’s Living Costs Climb as the Minimum Wage Remains Stalled

I saw a Western guy haggling over 100 baht for a taxi ride.  The driver wanted 300, and he wanted to pay 200.    I thought to myself, "Good lord, dude, that's only $3.21.

No meter? The real fare was probably 100฿ or less.

  • I feel so sad for Thais (or migrant workers) in Bangkok trying to live on just 400 Baht a day. Not much hope of a decent life. Everything is so much more expensive now.

  • Sadly the cost of living id going up across the whole of Thailand whilst the politicians do what they do best.   They talk a lot but achieve nothing.

  • It's the same the world over, try living in London, New York or Berlin on their minimum wages, the average citizen, no matter where, is getting shafted, not just in Bangkok.

Some people get caught up in the numbers without realizing. Then there is selfishness, possession et al.

I usually think what can I buy with the money or how would, say, 100 baht help me if it was my last 100.

Of course if I took a cab every day on the exact same route and it is always 200 baht and one day a guy wanted 300 i might argue but even then. these numbers are too round for a metered cab fare.

Nothing to do with currency... if the THB is weaker the prices will not go down, it is the greed of the companies and their shareholders.. Less profit is not accepted and when the consumption is less the prices go up to compensate for the not sold products... If the gas is going up 75 THB for can the price of soup raise 5 THB as the gas is so expensive but how many liters soup they can make with a can of gas??? it can never be 5 THB raise for a plate, maybe in reality 0,05 THB

Aside from global commodity prices it's 100% about currency. Explain how can you can increase the money supply while goods and services remain at the same level and not have the nominal prices increase.

The US dollar has lost 96% of its value since the inception of the federal reserve in 1913 (US dollar is a federal reserve issued note). That's directly correlated with the quantity of federal reserve notes in circulation. It's basic supply and demand economics.

If you think it's so easy to start a business and get rich by being greedy then please try that and tell how it works out.

Emphasizing saving before spending and adopting a structure like 50% on essentials, 30% on wants, and 20% on savings are strategies proposed by Thai Rath Money for financial stability. For those whose current income falls short of their needs, increasing income through side jobs or promotions is advised.

So according to them, a person on 400 Baht a day has to structure their spending thus....200 on essentials, food, clothes, rent, water, electric, travel to work. 120 on wants.....like they are going to have 120 spare, and 80 Baht a day savings. If they cannot manage that then after a 12 hour shift sewing clothes, they must go and work cleaning dishes for another 8 hours, and then sleep for 4 hours before travelling back to work again. It is the same the world over, people are having to work longer for less just to make ends meet. A good way of keeping the masses in order.

That is why Thai males don't build, they work in other professions because the exploitation of murmese workers has become the norm it's slave labour while Thailand charges exorbitant rates for hospitals and thinks tourists will be attracted here for medical tourism they have successfully attracted drug addicts and maniacs to Pattaya and Phuket now follow that model and grow morphine, much better than building casinos
