Severe flooding in Hat Yai district, Songkhla, left a local 7-Eleven store damaged, leading residents to collect items from the premises, including snacks, drinks, and alcohol. The incident, captured in videos posted on TikTok, has sparked online discussions about the appropriateness of the actions, with arguments arising over necessity versus theft.

The videos were shared by TikTok user @naruponnut, who showed the store with a shattered front window and flooding within. They documented residents filling bags with goods, while one individual retrieved alcohol from behind the cashier’s counter. Despite finding a bag full of coins, the TikToker claimed he returned it to a store employee during the event.

The online reactions have been divided. Some commenters felt that since the goods would potentially be discarded due to the flooding, it made sense for people to take essential items like food and water. Others noted that in times of crisis, securing basic survival supplies is understandable. However, the collection of non-essential items like alcohol drew criticism from some users.

Additionally, controversy grew when a teenager boasted online about taking alcohol and cigarettes from the store, claiming possession of over 100,000 baht worth of products. Although the post was removed, screenshots continue to circulate on the internet. The discussion touches on moral, ethical, and legal grounds during emergencies.

Currently, CP All, the company operating 7-Eleven in Thailand, has not issued a statement regarding the situation. Similarly, there has been no comment from local law enforcement. The lack of official responses leaves the community debating the ethics and legality of the actions taken during the flood.

Looking Ahead: With no official statements from the authorities or the store operator, it remains uncertain how the situation will progress. There could be potential legal actions or policy reviews on handling emergency situations in the future, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Flooding led to residents collecting goods from a damaged 7-Eleven, sparking debate.
  • The community is divided over whether the actions were necessary or constituted theft.
  • Official responses from CP All and local police are still pending.

A bit naughty methinks.....how would the looters feel if other folk did the same at their residences?

Hope that the franchisees will not be deducting this loss from their employees like they usually do! Will they still be forcing their employees to make 500 Baht plus purchases from their stores every month like they usually do?

Not satisfied with paying minimum wages, forced unpaid overtime, they require their poorly paid employees to hand over a portion of their paychecks every month, just so you know your place!

Put these rats in jail. Looters are the deepest form of evolution!

So what are your thought about people walking into stores in the USA and allowed to walk out with $950 is stolen goods with the police with no power to stop this.  $950 and under with no prosecution allowed.  Matter of fact, store employees have been fired trying to stop someone from freely taking what they want.

and who pays for the insurance eventuality, the consumer !!     it is stealing,   if the insurance pays out the goods belong to the insurance company so they are stealing from the insurance company and should be prosecuted

Topics like this always bring out 2 sides:

Those who have a moral compass and recognise that this is stealing

and those who have no moral compass and try to justify stealing

I would be absolutely gobsmacked if there were NOT reports of looting.

Whoever took alcohol and  cigarettes should face illegal charges

You can call it what you want  but if you have family, especially with kids, would you let the starve  or go without drinking water.

I have no problem with them taking food or water, or other items for survival...the government should cover the costs...by the way, alcohol and cigarettes are not needed for survival.

Most items cannot be sold... insurance should cover it  or the government should, but I mean only for items for survival..food, water, bandages etc...not items like alcohol or cigarettes.

Before the goody two shoes jump in...if you were in the same position, would you let your family, especially kids  starve, go without water, bleed from injuries etc

Yep, thats good hey!

Disgraceful behavior Thailand.

The perpetrators should be ashamed of themselves.

Not cool. :bah:

Ps, Did they leave the money there for the goods, for the 7/11 owner.

or maybe an IOU , name address telephone  number. ?  :cheesy:

I would think a soggy box of cigarettes isn't worth the jail time...
But civility is just a thin veneer on most societies when consequences aren't enforced... Thailand is no exeption.

This is as much a failure of government to both protect business in a disaster and provide for those suffering as it is opportunistic theft.
