PM2.5 Pollution Surges in Bangkok, Reaches Unsafe Levels

Featured Replies

It is 158 in Jomtien and 96 in Bangkapi now (Noon) re PM 2.5. Considering half of Jomtien/Pattaya radius is the sea, I think it might be safe to say it is not just vehicle pollution giving the high numbers & that chasing after dirty tail pipes is missing the greater cause.... hunk a hunka burning fields

Great job a$$holes. We live in Samut Sakhon and yes the whole family is sick with respiratory infections.

Na-Jomtien  is a bit murky.

Dust is up but not as bad as  it has been  hope the PM2.5 doesn't get up to 140 +++  like it has in the past.

They may claim crop burnign is out of their control, but they can control vehicles emissions.

I looked at Nasa FIRMS and there are hardly any fires at all in or around Thailand.

For all newcomers.

The World Health Organisation's safe level is 15μg/m³ (some articles say 12), but Bangkok hardly, if ever, reaches this kevel, so, what dies Thailand do, it created its own "safe" level 37.5 μg/m³, so today's reading far exceeds WHO's safe level... Seem, again, Thailand puts money before health...its "safe" level is there not to scare away tourists.

Yet Bangkok comes out as the best city for Tourists to visit

On most world tourists surveys

Am I missing something here 😕

It will go on for many more decades, nobody cares, nobody feels responsible....

I think the burning is the major culprit. I mean you can actually SEE it in the smog. Microscopic carbon particle particulate matter  are not something that cars generally put out. Cars generally put out gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide - and a very small percentage of particulate matter. The carbon dioxide is bad because it contributes to the greenhouse effect and climate change. Rainy season extended into November, do you think that's a one time fluke? Climate change doesn't necessary appear in the form of direct heat - it is the weather patterns that are disrupted. When you see car exhaust it's usually water vapor, or oil smoke from bad engines. Diesel trucks are a prime offender as to vehicles, unregulated, but they are a small percentage of vehicles on the road. If the gov't did anything they need to go out to the farmers and come up with some alternate methods of farming, and subsidize them if necessary. I will say that building more commuter trains is something that they ARE doing and will help.  Just my opinion for what it's worth.

In the US we had very bad air problems in Los Angeles and Denver. Both cities are MUCH MUCH better now.  In a valley area, and much of Thailand are large valleys, we are prone to air inversions.  The hotter air down low is unable to rise through the colder air above, and the pollution is held low -- to hurt everyone.
To fix this problem requires strong regulation and friendly winds.  We must move to a less polluting transportation strategy, and we must stop the crop burning.  This must take place everywhere in SE Asia, or we are hurt by the worst polluters. Since we cannot control the wind, I suggest we work harder to control what we can.

It's not just Bangkok!  The whole of Thailand, apart from the deep south, is affected.

You're not missing anything.  Tourists and residents just don't take it seriously or rely on masks and air purifiers.

If Bangkok was serious about getting people out of their cars, they need to make riding public transportation, including buses, a better experience.

Elon Musk is trying to address this issue.

He created a "sexy autonomous Mini Bus" in the hopes of reducing car ownership.

But might be another 20 years before the Thai government invests in these things.

Or maybe it's just another futuristic idea that never goes anywhere.

This exceeds the government-set safe threshold of 37.5 µg/m³, affecting provinces mainly in the Central Plains, Northeast, and North.

This is higher than the max safe level (15-35) in the rest of the world. Might as well set it at 100 microns/sqm. Then no problem, right?

Awesome idea.  Another thing they could do is connect them together and put them on tracks.  Like, you know, MTR/BTS trains.  Maybe someday someone will do something like that.

Elongelicals crack me up sometimes.

These buses are meant to complement the BTS trains ie last mile ie BTS cannot go everywhere.

And not all cities have a BTS. This can be used in any city.

Can I get an amen?

If only there was some way to do that already.  Like maybe with, wait for it, a driver.  What is the new idea here?

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before the existing van services start using electric vans.  They already have autonmous taxi service in China, so just a matter of time before Thailand gets that as well.

It's been miserable those last few days, and knowing that this is just the beginning just makes it feel even worse.

Mask up and make sure you have air purifiers in every room.  If you're lucky, it might only knock off a few weeks of your life expectancy.

What is new is driver-less, the bus is sleek and comfortable, I don't think anyone is allowed to stand in there.

So it feels more dignified and you don't feel like a 2nd class citizen as with current buses.

But it may actually be too costly to implement for countries like Thailand.

There is nothing new about driverless.  And if they can do it with cars they can do it with vans and buses if need be.   Unlike Elmo vaporware/fakeware, this is real and actually works.  Not just some concept vehicle driving around a movie studio lot, or a handful of Tesla cars driving around with 'safety drivers' in Austin pretending to be a real robotaxi service.

Elon Musk was talking about a 300$/month unlimited use of robo taxis business model. That means it becomes increasingly unnecessary to own a car. Because it costs way less than insurance, monthly payments on a car.

But anyway, not sure he can be trusted with everything he says.

Elonia says a lot of things.  Like cross country FSD by the end of 2017.  A million robotaxis by the end of 2020.  Humans on Mars by the end of 2024.  You don't seriously still believe anything he says?
