Thailand and Cambodian Airspace - Risks to Passenger Aircraft

Featured Replies

As we all know, there is a border dispute underway on the Thailand -Cambodia border. A close look at the flight paths of passenger airlines shows that flights to are still flying over the  conflict zone. These include Viet Air, Asiana, Emirates, Air Asia, and Emirates. In the past hour, an Emirates flight flew over the zone.

Doesn't anyone remember the downing of the Malaysian airliner that overflew the Ukraine-Russia border conflict area? Why isn't anyone taking into consideration the potential for an errant  anti aircraft missile?   There  is no evident contingency planning and no travel advisories given by anyone, especially the airlines. What are they waiting for?

I asked ChatGPT to compare the likelihood of a South-East Asian plane falling out of the sky due to poor maintenance, as opposed to being hit by a Thai or Cambodian SAM - it's been 30 minutes already and I still haven't got an answer. :coffee1:

Does Cambodia have the armaments capable of taking down an airliner?  The Thai F16s & Grippens don't seem to have any issues?

Nonsensical scaremongering.

Should hacve asked Co pilot :

  • Likelihood comparison: Maintenance-related accidents are extremely rare for commercial flights with reputable carriers; SAM strikes on civil aircraft in Thailand/Cambodia are even rarer, effectively near-zero outside active combat airspace.

  • What matters most: Choose established airlines, avoid routes skirting active border flashpoints, and rely on standard NOTAMs/airspace management that keep civil flights clear of military activity.

Simple solution coat your aircraft in Thai Baht' and they will become impervious to anything including nuclear weapons by the look of it 🤔

Travel advices are from both Thailand and some foreign countries: Stay minimum 50 kilometers away from the Thai-Cambodian border area,

If you feel unsafe travelling by air, then don't; just fFind another route or travel by other mean of transportation.

55555.  They don't call it the "Teflon Thai Baht" for nothing.  :coffee1:

Interestingly, for the last few days K6 flights from BKK to KTI have adopted a new route, flying South East and only crossing the border at its Southernmost point.  Previously they were flying a more logical route, as other airlines still are.

Old news now, but MOST airlines did this beginning a day or two into the conflict and extending into January.

THAI flew this way between Bangkok and Siem Reap...making flights take 10-20 minutes longer than usual. Same with Bangkok Airways, while Emirates took a slightly longer route over Chanthaburi but never did fly as far south as the Thai-Cambodian maritime boundary region.

THAI also flew this routing on flights between Bangkok and Phnom Penh...as did Bangkok Airways. Vietjet Air generally flew over Chanthaburi.

Even Vietnam Airlines, on Bangkok-Ho Chi Minh flights and any flights coming from India or Europe, flew over Hat Lek / the Thai-Cambodian maritime boundary.
