Driver's license: passport/yellow book question

Featured Replies

Years ago, I got my Thai driver's license using my passport. Its number is on my driver's license.
Two years ago, I got my motorcycle license, this time using my Yellow Book and pink ID card. My Thai ID number is on that license.
I recently renewed both licenses. And it turned out that the car license could NOT be renewed using my Yellow Book. I think that's a shame, because if the Yellow Book is used, your name is also printed in Thai on your license, which I find useful.
Is there a way to change/convert that car license so that it also shows my Thai ID number (from the pink ID card)?

Just use Passport. Then use pink card if you want to use your misspelt name in Thai.

I live in Bangkok, renewed my 5 y driving licences, car and motorbike, for the second time last year and managed to get my thai-id nr on both, this time without restrictions. The first 5 y period there was a restriction on the back side telling if I wanted to drive outside my khet (same as amphoe) I needed a letter from police. The new ones I got last year were without restrictions!!!

I have been driving around in many provinces, been stopped in various checkpoints and nothing happened, the police checked front side, no questions asked.

According to what I have heard there should be a restriction if a foreigner using thai-id from yellow house book / pink id card. But TiT ...

Seems like it – "any changes" – as I renewed my car driver's license in September last year (2025) and git my passport number as ID. My previous 5-years DL has my Thai ID-number. Yellow Book works as proof of address for me – it might be different in other provinces – but not anymore as ID-number, even that I also have a pink ID-card (for aliens).

If you use your pink ID card to obtain or renew a license, you are restricted to driving within the province of issue only.

Use your passport as ID and your yellow book as proof of address.
