Local authorities in Suphanburi have detained an abbot and two junior monks after they were found drinking alcohol inside a city-centre nightclub during an official inspection on December 19, 2025. The incident led to the immediate removal of all three from the monkhood, with one junior monk also entering drug rehabilitation after testing positive for narcotics. The discovery has drawn public attention due to the senior religious status of one of those involved.

The operation followed complaints from residents about loud music from a nightlife venue in Mueang Suphanburi district. District chief Sittiporn Kongmor ordered an urgent inspection, led by security deputy district officer Chaithat Jetsadapakon and members of the Mueang Suphanburi Volunteer Defence Corps, supported by a special administrative taskforce. Officers arrived at the venue on the night of December 19 to check compliance and inspect patrons’ identification.

During the inspection, officials noticed suspicious behaviour at one table where three men wearing caps, T-shirts and jeans attempted to leave the premises. Two rushed out of the nightclub, while the third tried to pose as a bar attendant, prompting officers to detain all three for questioning. Subsequent checks revealed religious items, including monks’ robes, ceremonial fans, pillows and alms bags, stored in their vehicle.

Authorities later confirmed that all three men were Buddhist monks. One was identified as the abbot of a well-known temple in Sam Chuk district, Suphanburi, while the other two were junior monks from temples in Mueang Suphanburi district. Investigators established that the abbot had driven the group to the nightclub, where they changed clothes inside the car before entering the venue to drink alcohol.

Drug screening tests found one of the junior monks had drugs in his system, with a urine test returning a purple result. No illegal items were found inside the vehicle beyond the religious belongings. The findings led officials to take all three monks to the local ecclesiastical authority.

Following the inspection, the monks were taken before the subdistrict chief monk and formally defrocked. The junior monk who tested positive for drugs was referred into a treatment and rehabilitation process in accordance with standard procedures. No criminal charges related to drugs or other offences were reported beyond the rehabilitation referral.

Khoasod reported that authorities said the case would be documented and forwarded to relevant religious and administrative bodies. Officials also reiterated that inspections would continue in response to public complaints to ensure order and legal compliance at entertainment venues across the district.

Lets not tag all monks as bad people as many are true to their faith.

Like all religions there are a few bad apples. Such as Catholic priests that really  like young choir boys 🤤🤤 🤤and don't believe in condoms.  Or Anglican priests (ex Church of England) who like executing the wives of English Kings as it saves them a lot of alimony and approve of condoms.

It's all part of the Monty Python movie being, "The meaning of life", which is probably the most accurate definition of life!

Some claim Buddhism is a philosophy not a religion. Either way, it is mired in hypocrisy.

Oh well, came early morning for alms and stayed late.

Agreed.

Monks....just Men wearing Orange Robes.  I see them eating in Restaurants and pushing Trolleys around in Supermarkets full of Beer and Spirits.    They are nobody special !

My Thai family are all devoted Buddhists and none drink or smoke.  I have been with my wife when she

gives food to the monks, and we have met a lot who are very devoted to their religion.

This Abbot and his 2 young monks are a minority among the monks, and I am glad they were

booted out.

Of course there are many who will paint this incident as their opinion of Monks of all stripes.

There are those of us who know the truth.

Yeah.  You make a good point.  Just like it wasn't every catholic priest who was buggering little boys in the archdiocese of Boston. Or the protestant minister who was doing the same in the village I used to live in, who then got moved by the church to another parish rather than moved to jail like he should have been.  Oh yes, you probably guessed already - he had fish meat to "play" with in that new place.  For balance, the minister who replaced the pedo was absolutely brilliant and a solid family guy.
