A 35-year-old woman was injured after a fallen signal cable caught her neck and caused her motorcycle to crash in a village road in Khon Kaen province in the early hours of 25 December 2025. The incident left her with severe neck injuries and prompted renewed calls for authorities to address recurring safety hazards linked to low-hanging cables and oversized vehicles.

The incident occurred at around 12.30am on 25 December 2025 on a road through Ban Thum village, near the village pond in Ban Thum subdistrict, Mueang district, Khon Kaen. Rescue workers from Ban Thum Municipality responded after receiving a report from Khon Kaen Hospital’s radio centre that a motorcycle rider had been injured by a signal cable that had come loose and was hanging across the road.

At the scene, rescuers found Ms Paweena, aged 35, lying on the road beside her fallen motorcycle and crying out in pain. She had a visible wound to her neck caused by the cable, and first aid was administered before she was taken to Khon Kaen Hospital where she remains under close medical supervision.

According to her younger sister, Ms Supaporn, aged 32, Ms Paweena had gone out to buy milk from a convenience store and was riding home as usual when the incident happened. As she reached the area near the village pond, her neck became entangled in the cable, throwing her from the motorcycle and causing the injuries.

Ms Supaporn said the family has filed a police complaint to pursue legal action and is urging relevant agencies to investigate and take responsibility for the incident. She also called for stricter controls to prevent large trucks or vehicles carrying loads higher than permitted from using village roads, noting that cables in the area are frequently snagged and pulled down.

Initial checks at the scene indicated that shortly before the incident p, a truck with a height exceeding 5 metres had driven through the area. The vehicle reportedly caught the signal cable attached to an electricity pole, causing it to break loose and fall across the road.

Investigators also noted that the site has poor lighting, which made it difficult for the rider to see the cable in time to avoid it. Officials have coordinated with relevant agencies to repair the cable and proceed with legal steps in line with established procedures. Daily News reported that authorities are expected to continue investigating the truck involved and assess longer-term measures to improve road safety in the village, including cable management and traffic controls for high-load vehicles.

She was fortunate; it is not inconceivable that she could have lost her life.
However, when you see that mass of cables hanging above you...

Lucky lady most probably not going to fast, if that was a young punk going fast it would have took his head off.

At 12:30 am I'm sure that she would have been able to see all the cables very clearly as these would have been perfectly illuminated by the excellent street lighting in all Thai villages.

Which is ??...   Blame the cables ???

We haven't had a lot of 'garrottings' of motorcyclists by cables this year (or not as many as reported as previous years)....

I do wonder what the 'legal steps in line with established procedures' means because it seems accountability when something like this occurs seems very weak in Thailand - which of course, as a developing nation is somewhat expected, nevertheless - it seems not 'enough' is done to prevent such issues....

... Then again, we have huge pot-holes on the roads in the UK which can take out a motorcyclist, knacker your alloy wheels etc and there are plenty of reporting systems - but again, accountability seems very weak.

I guess its the same everywhere - public office are just ineffective when it comes down to it.

Damn, that must've hurt... lucky she didn't die.
