Network is important, and we have seen a few treads, and also regularly becomes aware of westerns who overstay, or get in trouble economically in Thailand, be it banks shutting down your accounts, credit cards expired, etc the list is long.

Do you have anyone to turn to who would had given you shelter for a week, paid flight a hotel room for you, food, taxi, air  tickets?

Moving to an new country, involves also making sure you have some kind of security, and not gamble everything on one thing or one person.

This is quite important topic many seems neglected and never gave a thought. Why so?

I use Cardless withdrawals / Scan to pay on all of  my Thai bank accounts, the physical cards are back at home & any activities on my UK accounts require a PIN number which is generated from within the App.

I do have my Revolut card with me so once the phone had cooled down & I was able to get back into the Apps, I transferred £2,000 to it.

Note to self, on next trip to UK, pick up a couple of those card reader things that can be used to generate a one time pin.

A solar flare is enough to make all payment systems down for a week, a month? Who knows,

I have put quite a bit trust in my wife, but I will never invest more than 20-30% of my liquids, things maybe change when I get dependent on her the older I get, but a good  rule of thumb, keep some safety in backhand, just in case. Future is unknown.

Of course, but I don't think things could ever go that far south :coffee1:

Actually, I think she just wants a chef in the house.  I can see her thru her veil :cheesy:

Agreed & we keep very separate bank accounts (except for 1Million I put into an account in her name so she’d have money to live on whilst my estate is sorted should anything happen to me).

I also keep £4,000 in cash at home for emergencies (or for when the Thai Baht is weak) problem is I’m on holiday (Koh Lipe, no physical bank branches on the Island) for another week & in the middle of booking things for a trip to the Maldives in Feb so really would be screwed without my mobile banking apps.

Well, parents can be stubborn, and better to move before than to late.

I know everything about it, and spent 3 years helping out as much I can now, so get your stuff together and do as she says 😉

Wife have bank cards to two accounts, and also a credit card, just in case, and she also knows my PIN code to my credit card and my Norwegian spending account as a back up.

And on the islands we alsways make sure we have enough cash, and just saw Koh Kood atm machines was empty last week.

Still Koh Lipe is a bit more established island with cruise boat tourism as well, but can recall it was many atm machines there last time we where there.

Ree's not even 50 yet, and she can take care of me.  Not that I would let her.  Take myself out first, before becoming a burden to anyone.  If I can't, she already knows to do it.

no i had not anything to depend upon when i had to go back to sweden for back surgery, and the doctors here deny the MRI so i still got nothing

Wife didn't need me to begin with, and could have walked when we liquidated Udon Thani holdings 6 years ago.  A few M baht in her accounts, and said F'off, instead of leaving family & friends and following my butt to PKK.

Which she had major reservations about, but now loves it, and so glad she followed my silly ass :cheesy:

She has no desire to leave me, or go back north to family & friends.  Certainly doesn't need my Soc Sec or pension to live on, ever.

Thai Myna birds have always been extremely helpful to me.

She's got more monthly income than we do, alone.  Add her partners, and it's double.

She does miss my cooking though ... and yea, I send her photos all the time :cheesy:

Salmon being her favorite, so she really hates me sometimes 🤬

The problem when you get older, you either despise your wife, or your wife becomes a better friend than your best mates 😉

hehehe

I have realized again, my wife is more happy home at farm with family close by than any other place in the world no matter how luxurious or whatever the west or any tourist city in Thailand have to offer. She is a country Isaan girl, and we will head back as quick Im done with Norway for now. She have been here 6 months a year as much she could until we know made family reunion application in the beginning of the year, but now changed our minds again.

So we will be back. Happy wife, happy life, or?

I own Ppty in four countries, if one goes south, I have backups, unmarried, no kids, no pets, nothing I have to feed or water.  But I have folks in all four places that would take care of me if one day came when I couldn't wipe my own bottom anymore.  Will is setup so each 'geographical family' gets something.     Peace

Don't have mates, so not an issue.  I'd leave in an instant, if wasn't in bliss.  Me & the dog in a E-truck RV conversion would do me just fine.   I don't have patience for anyone, 5 earlier relationships (live ins) found that out.  :cheesy:

Not enough choices.

Ultimately, me, myself and I.
Though have a friends if the wife decides she’s had enough of my jokes and gives me the boot.

Been up to Udon & NBLP, with family, and surprised, after a day or so, she's ready to move on, explore more, or head towards home.   Opposite of what one would expect.

They had a funeral this year, not siblings, but she didn't want to go.   Told her just to use me as an excuse, tell them I'm sick or something  :coffee1:

Nah, she whouldnt leave you alone back there 😉

Thai women is like that

Things going south could be an immediate issue (eg lost phone with banking apps etc), or slowly going south, (eg running out of money and needing to return to your home country).

I'll give you a Christmad Day example that happened to me yesterday.

Out of the blue, 5 Lao police officers turned up at my rented house in Luang Prabang, arrested me and confiscated my passport and computer.

This caused me some problems (!), and with my mobile phone I messaged several people in the town whom I considered friends.  While they all sympathised, not one jumped on a motorbike to come to the police station to help or to understand the police viewpoint etc.

In the end, the problem was partially solved by myself, refusing to leave the police station until they returned my computer or stated the charges. (This was a good test of my Lao language skills, since the police spoke almost no English!)

My mexican standoff worked after 5 hours.  The police admitted that I was 100% innocent of any crime - they returned the computer and kept the passport so that they can claim some visa issue early next week and demand bribe payment from me in return for my passport.

(This is the second time in 5 years that the police have pulled this trick on me - perhaps no-one gave them any $ for Christmas...)

But now I see those 'friends' in a new light.  They are not IMHO, such good friends as I thought.

I can understand some peoples hesitation to come out and help, especially when it is not clear why they they took your computer. Who want to be involved if they found something explicit on your computer?

You where a spy hence your radio hobby? But if it is people who have known you for years, well, then

After years in Thailand there is very few I trust to be honest. A very few I can rely on if I need money or a place to crash, but if arrested innocent or not, even I would hesitate to run to the police station first day. I would like to know what the true situation was before I would interact.

Her decision not to go, not my influence.  She knows I don't need a reason to go someone where.  Hard keeping me at the house, even if NE, and my least favorite part of the country.

It's that dead boring zone, in between Krung Thep and the N & NE.  Once up there it's OK, but boring for about 4-500 kms.

We spend almost all our time together, and actually prefer that.  Neither of us have friends in PKK, and just one family, we might see every other month for a few hours.

I think this is about as anti social I've ever been, and with no effort involved :cheesy:

Strangely, I love it 😎

Yes, I understand their caution in not coming to the police station.  I guess they also know how corrupt some police are!

Multiple choice in the poll

I have pensions paid every month.

If my Thai wife dumped me, I'd have enough money to live anywhere in the 3rd world.

As she's my biggest money pit, I'd effectively have 2x-3x as much as I have now.

Same here, I might lose the 1Million I stuck into an account in her name + 200K that’s outstanding from a 1Million THB loan I lent her to buy land 5 years ago, but would probably save 1/2 Million THB pa if I was single

NB I don’t give her 1/2 Million pa but things like needing a bigger condo, twice the expense when grocery shopping, eating out, going on holiday etc… adds up to more than that.

Anyway, seeing as today is our 7 year anniversary I probably shouldn’t be thinking about things like that 🙂

Let’s say you are cut off completely for a month, what then ?

You get trouble with Uk because you never registered you living in Thailand and cut off completely and nothing works, bank cards, credit cards, nothing, you are left at the streets until you get back home and can start solving your issue with Uk tax office.

Every man needs to think about that!

And by thinking that, avoiding the no money, no friend, no visa, no home situation that some guys allow themselves to drift into,

It's simple self preservation.
