Tourists Told to Remove Overnight Tents From Pattaya Beach

It should have camping spots where people can pitch their tent overnight and by 8 am have to packed up and gone, charge 100 baht a night some young guys will love it, I used to love it, I even used to pitch up on a field near to where I lived, at the weekend,

But people aren't going to be like that, they will bring bottles, stoves, trash and the problem will explode if not nipped in the bud.

Jeez! Have the authorities nothing better to do? A couple of visitors in a tent. While the locals chuck rubbish everywhere.

It'll be the cheap Charlie Indians dodging hotel prices and holidaying on the cheap... probably got rice cookers and camping gas stoves with them too so that restaurants are obselete as well.

A simple (though maybe not easy) solution would be to pay crews to go out at 8:30 AM and haul off any trash, including tents that haven't been removed by that time.

Win-win. Cleaner beaches, and Thai people making 300 baht a day can afford to enjoy staying at the beach. (They're a lot tougher than I am... I'd get a room.)

Thais stay on the beach when there is something big and late at night. I had a hotel room with a view of the beach on NYE and can tellyou that at 5 am, there were still a lot of Thais on the beach.

Can you see a Thai who is paid to clean the beach getting foreigners who have set up to clean up and leave? Remember wer are at best talking about Thai police.

That's just mechanics. All they have to do is post up signs declaring a 2000 baht fine if tents and any garbage aren't removed by 8:00 AM. That could also be quite the earner for the BIB, like the ones around Asoke who fine people 2000 baht for cigarette butts.

Politics???

The problem is that if you let it go lax, you end up with tent cities of the homeless, like what is seen in a lot of Western countries. NYE people were allowed to stay on the beach but it was just staying on the beach not camping.

And why not?

Some people have nothing. 2 million homeless in the US. Some people say it's a rich country. Well! The wealth hasn't yet trickled down.

250k homeless, or living in cars in the UK. Must be a few in Thailand.

The authorities have to do better IMO. Better in my opinion to give all the tent dwellers, and campers a shovel.

What about doing something about the tons of rubbish everywhere. As usual; low hanging fruit, easily picked.

Yep! If you let people stay overnight, someone will post a YouTube or FaceBook vid and hundreds will show up within in a month, including lots of low-life backpackers and thieves.

...and if you try to enforce an 8:00AM 'check-out', people will start leaving turds buried under 1" of sand for others to discover.

People who exploit free and cheap aren't all going to be the most morally & socially conscious people.

You really don't know anything. People come up from Bangkok for New year's, especially teenagers. They party with their sangsom and drugs and then crash out wherever and leave a mess behind. They are unruly. This wasn't about unhoused people.

It's unsafe to camp on the beach. The tides are higher at this period. It was a full moon. As was pointed out earlier, the water will go higher and a tidal surge can do serious harm. The tidal surges for Pattaya were increasing and peaked Jan. 4.The tide went from approx. 1M on 30-Dec at 19:00 hrs to 3.08M at 06:25 hrs on Jan. 2. Some drunk kid who passes out on the beach is not going to do well.

You mean like posting laws that people should wear helmets while riding a motorcycle.

In Thailand, there is no law until its enforced.

There are 'beach camping sites' in Thailand - if people want those, they have the facilities.

The issue with 'freedom' camping (i.e. camping anywhere) is the litter that can be left over when there is no control and no responsibility taken by the campers themselves to ensure their area is left clean.

Another significant issue is no bathroom facilities - where are 'campers' going to the bathroom ?

Thus - this is not as simple as allowing a 'couple' of folk enjoying camping at the beach - its preventing an issue that would easily explode out of control and then as entitlement sets in it becomes a big issue to deal with... just like too many street dogs, stalls taking over the pavements etc... once it starts and is allowed to continue it inflates from what was once something harmless into a far bigger issue.

This is the 'thin end of the wedge' and authorities are correct to control this to keep the beaches clean - without this action imagine the trash on the beaches with 100's of campers.

Employing beach cleaners is also a good idea someone mentioned (I'm not sure if this is already done) - but who pays ? - municipal coffers ? At some point tourists are going to be charged for use of the beach which would be unfair of course.

I don't think this would fit with TAT'S plan to attract quality touri$t$.

When the water comes up, can't they just paddle away?

Why not make a 1km long space for the homeless at Jomtiem?

So what's wrong in that? Thrifty I'd call it.

I don't see "homelessness" in the photos. That would require a pile of garbage next to the cardboard sheet that they're sleeping on. I see that all the time in Bangkok where I stay.

I'm with ChipButty. Let them set up their tents at dusk and make them knock down their tent and leave no trace by 8:00. No harm there... And I'd bet that 90% + of the campers will be Thai people enjoying a cheap trip to the beach.

Great. And the beach will be full of garbage, poop and pee after them. Great place for a swim in the morning.

We're not talking about a few or a couple here. If it's allowed, lots of cheap charlies or backpackers will do the same. It will be out of control in a jiffy.

Cleaning up etc.? Did you ever think of that before blaming the authorities?

Jeeeeeeeeeeez! People are quick to blame!

Yes Sir, I thought it through.

Save on hotel fees. Have more money to spend supporting local food venders and the like.

Authorities need to prioritise their work.

Why not ask the authorities if you cannot understand basic camp site regulations. The op says "The tourists were reported to have understood the explanation and cooperated fully, dismantling and removing the tents without further issue" so if you are struggling seek some help about it as its common sense to most people.

Give it time........the place will be full of yurts!

What an amazing tourist experience that would be. Hiring a short time yurt on the beach, with a girl from the coconut bar. There's nowhere else in the world a tourist could get such an experience. 😂

"Glampers" are high-end tourists who pay as much or more than resort lodgings to sleep in silk inside air-conditioned tents, while butlers and personal chefs attend to their every need. Nothing like these riff-raff.

That whoosing sound you can hear going over your head is sarcasim. 🙂

Bunch of filthy low life losers.

You apparently don't remember ever being a poor student, or ever working your ass off for 300 baht a day. Much less all those who are currently totally unemployed because of the economy in the Eastern Corridor. Some folks can't afford a hotel.

Sure, you camp in Nice and then go to Monaco during daytime to pretend that you are a millionaire... LOL

Don't worry, Karma will teach him someday...

My 2 cents on this are:

I love camping but come on, Pattaya beaches are urban and definitely not suitable for camping. Just a little common sense is lacking...

They are more likely to be 'tourists' from the Indian sub continent.

If managed correctly I suppose there are possibilities, but remembering where we are it would never be managed properly, It would very quickly become a filthy stinking tent ghetto with the lowest dregs of society hanging out there. It needs to be nipped in the bud and thankfully that is what they have done
