Medical coverage

Featured Replies

Hi I'm looking for some good advice regarding medical insurance.

I am nearly 67 but still working in Switzerland where health coverage is excellent it also covers me whilst I'm in Thailand 2x per year .

Now from around September I will be full time resident in Thailand many people either bury head in sand or say they self insure.

I believe now you're ability to get a ltr visa is contingent on health insurance? .

So my question is how much should I expect to pay for reasonable cover age 67?

Or is it better to get cheap as possible knowing its useless and self insurance 1 million +

Thanks for any reasonable suggestions in advance

Get the non imm O retirement before entering Thailand, no need for insurance for that. If you want insurance get one in Switzerland. Too many tin pot insurance companies in Thailand.

Don't forget, premiums will get unaffordable for most when you need it the most

The premium with a coverage of 3M Baht will cost you around 250 Euro/month. Even with preconditions. in this case there will be a moratorium. Only inpatient. Free choice of hospital. In case of "no claim" the premium will not be increased. If you got a claim the premium will rise slightly for a limited time only.

Alternatively you pay everything by yourself.

Your choice.

I iam early 60s, took out a Thai inpatient policy that has just been renewed cost 110 000 baht for 1 million coverage( i have had this policy 8 years), i have nade 1 claim that was paid with no issues. note this policy pays a million a year any extra pay out of pocket, if i claimed this year the full amount but my issue carried forward to next year then they would pay another million etc etc.

Every 5 years there is an increase of betewwen 30-40% (common in Thailand) if no claim has been made during the year then 10% is discounted.

Beware of Thai policies as there is nothing preventing them for adding exclusions later for no other reason than getting older, and simply denying claims, i speak through personal experience.

My advice would be get an international policy from your home country, that has robust consumer protection OR self insure for that i would say you would need 3 million and more if it was a serious condition, if you go the self insure route a decent plan would be to have regular health check ups ie blood work etc, to catch anything in its early stages, then have them seen to, or fly back to your home country to have issues sorted, i have seen cases where foreigners keep hanging on hoping for the best and they end up with no money and are not fit to fly back, and remember hospital prices are rising about 15% a year

For the LTR you need health insurance of 3 million baht . this can be a foreign health insurer, or you can show 100 000 USD in a bank to cover the insurance(not looked into this recently but that money can be in a foreign account( in Thailand you would be lucky to get much over 1% in a bank)
