British Passport photos

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations on where to get photos taken for a British passport application. Many photo places don't meet the requirements and get rejected. So if you know of a place that you have used successfully, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

Thanks

I had the same issue using photo shops(i'm British) they all digitally altered the photo, they said Thais like it that way to make them look younger etc etc, as above i had mine done at Big Camera, they seem to be in all malls, make sure you take the dimensions of the photo to the shop just to be safe

Thanks, I'll check them out

Anywhere that can take a half decent photo is all you need! You can do it yourself with a reasonable smart phone. The important thing is the dimensions - you need to look at UK Gov website for the correct values. The other important feature is the backdrop colour - again all of this is specified in the UK Gov site. I have just had two new UK passports for myself and family, none were done at recommended photo places, even if they are not happy with the first attempt, they will contact you for another pic if yours is unsuitable.

It is 99% common sense, just make sure to get it focused!

I agree 100% - that is how I did mine and I had no issues at all

Haven't been to the new VFS location but there were plenty of places that did passport photos at the old one in Trendy. There were photo booths upstairs in the waiting room as well.

From www.gov.uk

The size of your printed photos

You need to provide 2 identical photos.

They must:

measure 45 millimetres (mm) high by 35mm wide (the standard size used in photo booths in the UK)

not be a cut down version of a larger picture

If you use a photo booth outside the UK, check it can give you photos that measure 45mm high by 35mm wide.

The size of your image

The image of you - from the crown of your head to your chin - must be between 29mm and 34mm high.

The quality of your printed photos

Your photos must be:

printed to a professional standard

clear and in focus

in colour on plain white photographic paper with no border

without any creases or tears

unmarked on both sides (unless a photo needs to be countersigned)

unaltered by computer software

What your printed photos must show

Your photos must:

be a close-up of your full head and upper shoulders

contain no other objects or people

be taken against a plain cream or light grey background

be in clear contrast to the background

not have ‘red eye’

In your photo, you must:

be facing forwards and looking straight at the camera

have a plain expression and your mouth closed

have your eyes open and visible

not have hair in front of your eyes

not have a head covering (unless it’s for religious or medical reasons)

not have anything covering your face

not have any shadows on your face or behind you

Do not wear glasses in your photo unless you have to do so. If you must wear glasses, they cannot be sunglasses or tinted glasses, and you must make sure your eyes are not covered by the frames or any glare, reflection or shadow.

I went in March last year and there was only one copy shop which may have done photos also.

Probably a few now but best to go prepared.

I had my photos done at Big Camera , they had a list with the different requirements of different countries but U.K. wasn’t there ( or I didn’t see it ) so i took a screenshot of the above photo.

I've been working on the premise that photos with a watermark on the back are unacceptable which was the case the last time I got a new passport. Someone told me that this is no longer the case and paper with a watermark is acceptable now. I will find out on Friday if this is correct when I go to VFS.

Thanks for the information. I got my last photo done at a local Fuji shop. Showed him the the requirements listed above. He didn't have the right colour background so I pointed to a cream coloured copy machine to show the required colour. He photoshopped the correct colour in. When I got home the pictures were a couple of mm too big so I cut them down. If VFS have a place that knows exactly what is required it would just make it simpler to do on the day.

Hi

There is normally a copy shop near every immigration office.

Chang wattana, Hua Hin etc
