Thailand is poised to become a leading global hub in the food and pharmaceutical sectors, according to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Speaking at the GPO Pharmaceutical Summit 2026, held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO), Anutin highlighted the country's potential to boost food and drug security on the world stage. He praised the GPO's role in providing quality medicines at affordable prices, highlighting its importance to national health security.

Anutin noted the critical contribution of the GPO's legacy over six decades to Thailand's pharmaceutical sector. Anutin commended its efforts during public health crises, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, where Thailand ensured comprehensive healthcare access to all, irrespective of status. The country's approach was highlighted as a model for prioritising care over profit and showcasing robust healthcare provisions.

Anutin's vision for Thailand includes positioning the nation as a centre for global pharmaceutical innovation, which he believes will enhance competition and healthcare system sustainability. He spoke about the importance of ongoing development in pharmaceutical raw materials, R&D, and domestic vaccine production as essential components for true security and self-reliance. People view these efforts as crucial for ensuring universal access to advanced medicines.

Anutin stressed the government's commitment to maintaining public service standards and called for an urgent restructuring of the public health sector. The aim is to bolster resilience and prep for future health challenges, requiring collaboration across all sectors. Thailand's potential extends beyond being a mere supplier; the nation is gearing up to become a dependable partner in global food and pharmaceutical security, establishing a significant international presence, reported the Bangkok Post.

Good luck on the pharma... India so far down road out of sight

And recall that ought to be criminal enterprise during Covid when Thai pharma was supposed to produce vaccine? Not only for Thailand, but much of SE Asia. How much did they produce? Pretty sure answer was none. Just a way to scam some money and who cares about pandemics as long as there is grift to be had?

He can envision what he likes, but Thailand ain’t the hub of anything other than easily available sex. It’s known worldwide as a hub for that.

Second would be as a car manufacturing hub for SE Asia.

Other than that, The country offers other things but is in no way a hub, nor is it likely to become a hub of anything else.

Anutin Charnvirakul envisions

Well during the pandemic he said a certain Thai pharmaceutical entity was going to be the saviour of all.. that didn't happen, most relied on imported vaccines

As for food.. no-need to comment on the ridiculous

Keep him away from anything to do with pharmaceuticals after the huge cluster he made from the cannabis laws

If I remember correctly during the Covid pandemic..

In Thailand while Anutin was the health minister, he stopped private entities from procuring/selling masks and manufacturing/selling hand sanitizer gel, making them in some areas unobtainable while mandating that everyone had to use them?

He also boasted that Siam bio-science would be the first to make a vaccine... how did that work-out?

They can’t, or won’t stock up the hospitals with effective pain medication as well as others. How the hell does he think he can do better than all. Just a joke, farang hater that wants to be elected. Shame we don’t have a say.

How can Thailand "boost" glodal food security...as for pharma... it's got a good start with drugs, they're everywhere.

Thailand the hub of hubs... maybe add a hub of disasters... You can Thai food almost in every country it will not bring extra tourists now for the food...

Is there any room left for another hub. FFS 🙈

Huff and puff !! Simply posturing . . .

Wheres the strategy and resource to move those ideas forward ?

In Anutin's dreams - nowhere else . . . .

Hub-ba hub-ba hub-ba!

Would be nice to just be a hub of competent, clear headed, organised government, that knew where it was going and how to get there.

Not so sure Tootin Anutin's yer man for that.

Oh, please.

Thailand can do stuff.

They're the internationally recognized "Hub of collapsing cranes"!

Seriously....Thailand isn't that big a supplier besides many countries are far ahead.

Well, at the very least:

Thailand should be able to out-produce the wheat, corn, and soybean output of the US and Ukraine, combined.

Thailand has more sunlight.

Seriously, how does Thailand have more sunlight than the US, and what about water, needed to grow crops... currently Thailand can't compete, even in rice it struggles...so let's not base a discussion on what Thailand "should" be able to produce.

Well...IF you really want to get SERIOUS about Sunlight, then we need to measure the sunlight in Watts per square meter.

image.png

The main reason for this, of course, is the difference in angle of incidence of sun rays, especially in winter months, when the angle increases markedly for Iowa.

Note: You will recall that James Hansen has been harping on watts per meter squared for many years, even decades.
