Currently enjoying some brutal Jimmy Carr on the treadmill. But who's the best?

A good comedian will have mostly good nights, but can have some. pretty bad nights too. You can't pick one because so many are equally brilliant. Some of the great comedians acts have not aged well (e.g. Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Red Skelton). other comedians could do everything, sing, dance, standup and films. Jerry Lewis was one of those people.

Some of the top tier that I believe will still hold audiences long after they are gone (and some have shown it) are;

Frankie Boyle

Robin Williams

Peter Kay

Ricky Gervais

Rowan Atkinson

Dawn French

Jennifer Saunders

Joanne Lumley

Stephen Fry

Ronnie Barker

Laurel and Hardy

Charlie Chaplin

George Carlin

Joan Rivers

Marx Brothers

The 3 Stooges

Rodney Dangerfield

Buddy Hackett

Louis de Funes

Don Rickles

Redd Foxx

Norm Macdonald

Richard Pryor

That's a good list.

I'd also have Billy Connolly and add Bob Newhart and Al Murray. (Although I accept that some AN posters will be confused by Al Murray's presence on a list of comedians as they believe 'The Pub Landlord' to be a politician.

So let's be clear:

  • English comedy

  • Stand-up, not sitcom or sketch
