I did so every year, for the six Summer months when I was not in Thailand, 2016-21........six years.

Mostly Turkish Kurds and Bulgarian "Pomaks", but also Iranian and Iraqi Kurds.

They were all workers in the Kebab shop under the flat.

They were interested in girls, drinking and getting a flash car......none of them practised or gave a **** about religious observance and they revelled in that.........they were all immensely grateful to be in a country where they could be FREE of all that.

During that time, with the turnover in staff, I must have got to know about 30 different people.

I KNEW them all.......you know **** all.

For 25 years I lived next door to a muSLIM family in East Dulwich - never a problem - indeed occasionally shared a beer with the father over the fence and supported his planning application for a "garden room " aka another bedroom as a good neighbour should. Indeed on my travels I've always found muslims very accomodating and helpful - especially in Turkey. YMMV

The business owner is a Kurd of many years settlement in the UK with 3 British born sons, in their 20's, who are indistiguishable in their outlook from any "English" British citizen.

His business partner, more recently arrived/naturalised and married to English woman with young child, also indistinguishable.

All the Pomaks were/are in the process of settlement.

Likewise the Iranians, who spoke of life in the UK as a "release from imprisoment".

All of them were more determined and serious about the transformation of their life experience than anyone else I have met.

None of them intrerested in anything of their former lives except their music and food.

I have.

I used to work for a butcher who regularly gave extra uncharged portions of meat and meat products to people who were hard up, particularly mothers with young kids.
