Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Trump said he was “not sure” Nato would meet the “ultimate test” of defending the US if it were under threat. “We’ve never needed them … They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan … and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the frontlines,” he said.

A total of 3,486 Nato troops died in the 20-year conflict, of which the majority, 2,461, were US service members.

Four hundred and fifty-seven British troops died, while another 2,000 military and civilian personnel were wounded in action.

Canada, long the US’s closest ally and largest trading partner, suffered 165 deaths, including civilians. Canada’s 12-year deployment was the country’s longest combat mission, with more than 40,000 personnel, and the deadliest since the Korean war in the 1950s.

Other Nato allies, including Italy, Germany and France, also had soldiers who died.

Trump has singled out Denmark, which controls Greenland – a territory the US president has said Washington “must” take over” – as being “ungrateful” for US protection during the second world war. Denmark suffering 44 combat deaths in Afghanistan, the most per capita outside the US.

He is very wrong, very insulting and worst of all his people have failed to inform him. The largest British base in Afghanistan was located in Helmond Province (we called it "hell on earth) and it was named Camp Bastion. I was lucky as an American and I only spent about a month there but the Brits operated this base for over 10 years. Helmond looked like a desert and when units moved there was no terrain for cover and concealment. Many times units on the move were like sittiing ducks. Many Brits and NATO personnel were killed and injured in Helmond. Not just Brits but I worked alongside Dutch, Norwegian and German military personnel. They faced the same risks I did. No hestitation in ever going to war wtih them again. The only personnel i saw who "stayed a little back" was anyone with the United Natioins and several members of the Indian military who spent all their time going from their Embassy to the NATO dining hall in Kabul. On this he has to admit he was wrong and apologize. Of course this president is never wrong and does not apologize.

Someone needs a slap up side of the head to read when Article 5 of the NATO treaty was invoked, and why.

Mehhh... just slap him up side of the head anyway.

Donald Trump also gave the former Royal Harry the moral highground on this issue. No matter what people think about Harry he did serve in Helmond and did not "stay a little back" because he was part of an AH 64 Apache crew and actually flew missions. There a lot of videos of American Afghan veterans who are also critical of these comments and have apologized to British Afghan veterans.
