The Election Commission (EC) has announced that Sunday, 1 February 2026, will be the advance voting day for registered voters in the upcoming election of Members of Parliament (MPs) and a simultaneous referendum in Thailand. The general election day is scheduled for 8 February 2026. To ensure orderly voting, the EC imposed a temporary prohibition on the sale and distribution of alcohol within election areas during both the advance voting and the main election day.

Ahead of these important dates, the EC has issued specific regulations. Alcohol sales are banned from 6.00pm on 31 January 2026 until 6.00pm on 1 February 2026 for the advance voting day, and from 6.00pm on 7 February 2026 until 6.00pm on 8 February 2026 for the election day. Violations of these rules can result in penalties of up to six months in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.

Additionally, there are strict bans on election campaigning and advertising starting at 6.00pm the day before both advance voting and election day. The campaigning restrictions aim to prevent disturbances and maintain voter awareness and neutrality. Any breaches of these regulations will incur similar penalties.

Other restrictions include a ban on referendum campaigning from 6.00pm on 7 February 2026 until 5.00pm on 8 February 2026. Only eligible voters, including those holding Thai nationality for at least five years, 18 years old or above, and listed in the constituency’s household registration for at least 90 days, can partake in the election. Certain groups, such as Buddhist clergy and those deemed mentally incapacitated, are disqualified from voting, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Advance voting is set for 1 February 2026, with general elections on 8 February 2026.

  • Alcohol sales and election campaigning are banned during specific periods to ensure order.

  • Violations of the EC rules can lead to fines or imprisonment.

Awesome! They have to protect the population, so they do not drink and vote because they are aware of that the vote doesn´t count later as some will be pushed away, some taken to court, and behind the door's coalitions.

I assume the alcohol restrictions apply only to that group of people then?

It might be difficult for sellers of alcohol to check for eligibility I would think. Besides, if the alcohol ban is like the others during the year you'll be able to get it anyway, just not from main shops like Lotus or 7/11.

To be sure that everybody will vote sober, there should be alcoholtests be available for everybody at every voting station... Why an alcohol ban that does not hold?? I buy a bottle of beer after 11 am on Saturday and drink it Sunday and than I go to vote... How is it being checked??? Besides I am wondering if you want to drink and go early in the morning and do sober your vote you can't drink in the afternoon....You made the crosses already. it is not a day task

It makes absolutely no sense as people are able to to purchase prior to the prohibition period and hence able to drink during the prohibition period.

Why should all that have anything to do with farangs, esp tourists on holiday?

Why would that be a rational assumption?

The ban is not on drinking, it is on buying/selling alcohol.

You referenced drinking during the prohibition period which suggests that you think drinking during that time is prohibited.

If it is not on drinking, what is the use of an alcohol sale/buy ban than??? I buy because I want to drink and you sell because I want to drink... I can buy and sell before the ban, so I can drink, but what is the purpose of the ban than?

The purpose of the ban is to stop the purchase and sale of alcohol. There is no prohibition on drinking alcohol and that you don't understand that is neither here nor there.

No my point was what's the point of a sales prohibition when people can and will drink alcohol that can be purchased before the prohibition begins. Obviously even with the ridiculous prohibition alcohol can still be got from mom the small shops (some won't sell). Again same thing with the Buddhist days prohibition.

yes you said before as you always give empty comments.. but explain why is there a ban.. If I buy today a bottle of wine I can go to a restaurant on Sunday , bring my wine and drink it..I don't buy, the restaurant doesn't sell so no problem.. But why the ban than??? explain that to me.. It seems you don't understand

Before the Ban one party used to give out free drinks at polling stations, when they got drunk enough they ensured that they voted for the right party.

Well you surely wouldn't want them voting for the 'wrong party', would you? 😜
