Thailand’s Election Shock: Anutin Charnvirakul powers up after big win

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has come out of the snap election with a commanding result that puts him in a stronger position to shape the next government. He campaigned hard on nationalism and security at a time when tensions with Cambodia have been simmering, and that message clearly landed with a large chunk of voters. His party is now best placed to lead coalition talks, with the reformist opposition trailing behind. The result also raises the prospect of a rare second term for a Thai leader, something the country hasn’t seen in decades. A separate public vote on constitutional change has added another major political negotiation to what happens next.

I can't help but feel that this is a tragedy for the nation. Anutin represents the status quo, the elite and he is aligned with the military. With the exception of cannabis he's never done anything progressive in his life.

He cares not one iota for the people, and never forget he was Deputy PM under Prayuth for 10 years, as they decimated the economy.

He represents a conservative choice, is in support of the elite, and major corporations over the people. It was likely simply a sense of nationalism that propelled him to the victory, and the border dispute likely helped him dramatically.

Woe is Thailand. The great Lion of Southeast Asia has slowly become a rather sickly alley cat, when it comes to the economy.

The conservative forces rallied to this former cannabis king . When Puea Thai was ended last November .Peoples Party were so naive and suckers . And now the Courts will go after PP and make it irrelevant. Basket case country where if anyone tries to suggest 'reform.or change '. You will be smashed ...Dying Kingdom

Go Anutin. He did a decent job as caretaker PM.

Thailand cannot change overnight and if a prospective 'moderniser' includes anti royal, and anti military, sentiment it will not gain popular support amongst the masses.

It looks as if Thailand has chosen to follow path of "same ol', same ol'" fir the next few years.... a nationalistic, incompetent bunch of old men firmly in the pocket of the military.

The Cambodian conflict has been successfully used to whip up blind nationalism in the Thai rank and file. This kind of "it ain't good unless it hurts" attitude will allow the government to stagnate the economy, trample on civil rights and allow unregulated commerce and industry destroy Thailands environment and natural resources.

Only 25 of the 44 People Party members facing suspension if the Supreme Court takes up their case are currently MPs.

And if suspended/ banned, I think a by- election would be called, which, if in Bangkok, they would likely win again.

The People's Party won the Party List vote by a landslide, they will not be extinguished.

Anutin plays to the masses; he did it during Covid as Health Minister; so you have to concede he is politically savvy.

I have seen him interviewed on the Singaporean CNA Channel in English and he came accross as a reasonable and competent individual. Whether he can revive the country's ailing economy remains to be seen.

I think the Peoples Party's rise has been stalled but not ended by this result. They just have to play the long game, but their time will surely come.

Once again the naievity of PP has led it to stumble. Perhaps people don't want charter reform to include the Monarchy? Maybe they could have gone slower in order to get bigger support. There are many areas they could have focused on. Education is one.

The whole family is disappointed. How many years can a party keep losing before people prefer others in their place?
