She's there to answer questions from Congress, which has an oversight responsibility. Not for the first time, she and Patel are avoiding questions or answering not truthfully. That should be punished.

US Congress does not have a (physical) law enforcement arm of its own, other than the security officers keeping intruders and firearms out of the chambers. This was highlighted during the scofflaw president's first term.

A few decades back during the hearings for a different scandal (Iran-Contra), one of the witnesses was asked if he was aware that he was violating an act of Congress. Sayeth the witness "everyone knows that act isn't worth the paper it is written on."

Scolding remarks and sending strongly-worded letters is about as harsh of a punishment as it gets.

Well, many of us had given up on ever seeing a straw that would break the camel's back, the thing that would finally wake up people from the spell of that glowing, orange salesman: child sex trafficking. It is now a problem of humility for his defenders to admit what a foul reprobate they sent their $$$ to and alienated members of their families for not sharing with them the con they've been lured to.

Yes it's known as the burden of proof (Latin: onus probandi — "the burden of proof lies on the one who asserts"

When someone makes a claim ("X is true", "Y happened", "This evidence exists"), they can't just say:

• "Go look it up yourself"

• "You search for the evidence"

• "Do your own research"

...and then act like they've fulfilled their responsibility. That's dodging the burden.

The person asserting the claim is the one who should be able to point to specific, credible evidence supporting it (e.g., a study, document, article, data source, or reasoning).
