PM Demands Ratcliffe Apology for "Colonised by Immigrants" remarks

Featured Replies

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's comments outraged UK politics.

Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, sparked a political storm with his inflammatory remarks on immigration. He claimed the UK was "colonised by immigrants" and criticised the PM for not taking tough economic measures. Labour's Sir Keir Starmer, alongside No 10, swiftly slammed these comments as "offensive and wrong," demanding an apology.

The controversy erupted following Sir Jim's Sky News interview, where he voiced concerns about the UK's population growth. He suggested that the Prime Minister lacked the resolve to stabilise the economy by making "difficult decisions." The backlash was immediate.

Critics argue Sir Jim's statements fuel divisiveness. "Play into the hands of those who want to divide," warned a No 10 spokesperson. Manchester United fans groups, including the Supporters Trust and Muslim Supporters Club, expressed deep concern. They insisted such remarks should unite, not alienate, supporters.

Football organisations also condemned the billionaire. Show Racism the Red Card and Kick It Out emphasised the need for unity. The 1958 Group criticised Sir Jim for commenting from a tax haven. "Ill-advised," they branded his words, highlighting his Monaco residence to avoid UK taxes.

Sir Jim, however, remains steadfast in his stance. Drawing a parallel to his tough decisions at Manchester United, he argued that addressing major national issues demands courage and unpopularity. Since acquiring 27.7% of the club, he made sweeping changes, including sacking two managers and making hundreds redundant.

The billionaire, with a net worth of £17bn, met Reform UK leader Nigel Farage recently. He described Farage as “intelligent,” sparking further debate. Farage backed Sir Jim's concerns about immigration, challenging Labour's stance.

Prominent political figures joined the fray. Sir Ed Davey insisted the remarks were "out of step with British values" and urged Sir Jim to apologise. Meanwhile, information from the Office for National Statistics contradicted Sir Jim's claims, estimating the UK's population slightly lower.

Sir Jim's multi-faceted empire, INEOS, known for everything from chemicals to luxury brands, remains under scrutiny. Yet, his controversial statements have placed him at the centre of a heated national discussion.

Key Takeaways

  • Ratcliffe claimed the UK was "colonised by immigrants."

  • Political leaders and fan groups demand an apology.

  • ONS data contradicts Ratcliffe's population claims.

More nonsense from AN. Whatever you may think of Farage, his intelligence is not a subject of debate. Now if we were talking about Reeves, Lammy, Cooper and Co. that would be a different story.

Colonists have been around for a millennia. Migrants are not colonists in that they haven't taken the reins of government.

Starmer said......"We've had free speech for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom, and it will last for a very, very long time,"

So then Starmer swiftly slammed these comments, from Ratcliffe, as "offensive and wrong," demanding an apology, doesn't add up.

Starmer was clearly lying in the Oval Office......SHOCK??cheesy

No, no you don't get this free speech thing. You can say what you like as long as it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings. If I decide that you calling me a 'shortarse' for example is offensive, then you have to be a banned from saying it. Hope that clears it up for you.

Sadly, there's going to be a tipping point. And it won't be based on democratic principles, or voting.

Just like "back home in the desert", it'll be when enough zealots get organized and get weapons.

It totally adds up, Starmer just disagrees.
Ratcliffe finally dares to speak now that ManU are doing well. A few bad results and he'll shut up again.

Migrants become colonists once they fail to move on elsewhere. And if their numbers are sufficient they can determine who holds power. That is what Starmer is counting on.

The PM is quite in order to call out this odious character who is one of the many billionaire tax dodgers.

As a Man U fan I am disgusted by his racist comments as are many more of our supporters.

Wait a sec. Doesn't Starmer have any freedom of speech too? I thought freedom of speech meant that anyone may speak up and therefore so can the Prime Minister. If he thinks Ratcliffe was offensive and wrong, then that is his point of view. Or are politicians not entitled to their opinion? Ratcliffe is still a free man.

'The UK risks becoming an "island of strangers" without tougher immigration policies,' said Starmer in May 2025.

As ever, it is a matter of finding the right balance.

Radcliffe owes no apology to Starmer over this.

From the Sky News interview:

You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in,” he said on the fringes of the European Industry Summit in Antwerp.

“I mean, the UK has been colonized,” he continued. “It’s costing too much money.” “The UK has been colonized by immigrants, really, hasn’t it?”

”I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people.”

He's not wrong. The UK can't afford that. Neither can Europe or the USA. Or the collective West.

12 million people in 5 years, and they wonder why housing prices are so high.

Freedom of speech?? Does that mean Starmer can lie to President Trump and JD on live TV??

Where do we draw the line?

Starmer does have freedom of speech and can indeed disagree with Ratcliffe's opinion, but he can't say Ratcliffe's opinion is wrong, it's his opinion!

Ratcliffe's statement ("the UK has been colonised by immigrants" and that it's draining resources, with criticism of Starmer for being "too nice" on economic measures) is clearly his opinion / interpretation of data and events:

It's subjective: how one defines "colonised," what counts as "draining," whether current levels are sustainable, whether Starmer's policies are "too nice," etc.

There is no single objective, universally agreed metric that makes the statement provably "right" or "wrong" in the way "the capital of France is Paris" is right.

Starmer crossed the line by declaring it "wrong."

He should have limited himself to "I strongly disagree," "I reject that characterization," "That's not how I see Britain's immigration story," or a similar phrase that expresses opposition without claiming objective incorrectness.

Nobody can legitimately declare it "wrong" in any objective sense because:

Opinions aren't facts that can be measured or disproven with evidence.

They are internal, subjective positions shaped by your experiences, values, reasoning, emotions, and perspective.

Saying "your opinion is wrong" is like saying "your favorite color is incorrect" or "it's wrong that you prefer spicy food" — it doesn't make logical sense, but thats's Starmer for you!

Sir Jim cited incorrect figures to back up his claim, telling Sky: "I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it's 70 million. That's 12 million people."

According to the Office for National Statistics, the estimate for the UK's population in mid-2025 was 69.4 million, compared with 66.7 million in mid-2020, no where near Ratcliffes claim of a 12 million increase.

Legal tax avoidance is not odious. I consider it an obligation, especially when the government wastes it on policies that actively harm the country.

He didn't mention race. And as a Man U fan neither should you since the only race you've been involved in lately is the race to sign bang average players at astronomical fees.

Good catch. I suspect he was talking about 2000, and not 2020. A dumb mistake, but not uncommon. Or maybe he was talking out his butt.

In any case the 9 million on the dole is troubling.

You won't be attending the games as a form of protest, then? If you don't Isn't that hypocritical?"

On LBC radio Ben Kentish show last night one of the topics was this billionaire’s outburst. A caller who represented (I think) “Kick Racism Out” absolutely nailed it: exposing the lies that Radcliffe spewed about UK population growth (12 million in 5 years “!!!

Look, it’s obvious that the moronic minority can’t wait to get Farridge into No. 10 but with cheerleaders such as this billionaire don’t be surprised if further scrutiny of this far right hyperbole works against this aim.
