A Russian man was detained in Pattaya on Wednesday night after allegedly assaulting a Thai woman while intoxicated. Police arrived following reports of a drunken foreigner attacking a woman outside a shopping center on Pattaya Second Road, injuring her. Bystanders and tourists restrained the man until authorities took him into custody.

The incident occurred at 21:15 in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. The suspect, about 30 years old, appeared incoherent and aggressive, necessitating intervention by locals, motorcycle taxi riders, and tourists. He was found with minor abrasions and was subsequently held at Pattaya City police station.

Witnesses, including motorcycle taxi rider Prawanwit Somanat, described seeing the Russian argue with another foreigner before suddenly attacking the Thai woman. The victim was struck to the ground, hitting her head, as she attempted to leave a convenience store. The assailant then reportedly caused further disturbances, attempting to attack others who tried to help.

An employee from a nearby massage shop reported the man had been causing trouble earlier, harassing individuals from the beach to the main road. The Russian's behavior led to charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Police await a formal complaint from the victim for additional legal proceedings.

"...The Russian's behavior led to charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct..."!?

This incident in Pattaya is deeply troubling and sadly all too familiar.

Once again we see a drunken foreigner wreaking havoc, this time injuring a local woman, and disturbing the peace in a busy tourist area.

What’s most frustrating is that the charges mentioned seem far too lenient given the seriousness of the assault. Striking a woman to the ground, causing her to hit her head, is not a minor offense.

It’s fortunate that motorcycle taxi riders and bystanders stepped in quickly to restrain this thug before further harm was done.

One hopes the victim will file a formal complaint so that police can pursue stronger charges. Assault should not be brushed aside as mere drunken misbehavior. Jail time seems appropriate!

Pattaya, and Thailand more broadly, deserves better than to have its residents and visitors subjected to violence from intoxicated foreign troublemakers.

Authorities need to send a clear message that violent conduct will be met with serious consequences, regardless of nationality.

thailand wanted quality tourists, they shouldn't complain

That's

the problem. Thai people only complain to the police when the situation escalates. The article says the Russian had already caused problems, but no one had taken action.

They deserve VIP tourists 🙄

Why? So he can assault Ukraine's women and children? People like this are unfit to serve and professional military don't want them anywhere near their unit. They are typically walking misfits who cannot follow procedures or obey orders.

Yeah, then they go home and do the same to their wives / girlfriends.

Domestic Thailand throughout Thailand is very very common and more often than not a blind eye is turned so pls don't make out that they're angels, they're far from it.

Or, when a foreigner is involved, and they can smell money.

How do you know this? The tourist numbers suggest otherwise.

With the dwindling tourist numbers these days they'll let anyone in...

The guy in the file picture looks pissed. I wouldnt want to mess with him.

Yes, and they still do. the problem is that it´s very hard to see what kind of personality someone have at the entry point. But, maybe you can help them with that instead of filing stupid comment. Why don´t you ask if you can be a volunteer at the airport, to mentally screen everyone before entry. I am sure you have a lot of friends with this magical ability as well. Ask them to join and cover all entry points and borders.

Attacking Ukrainian women is too risky for this Russian, so he attacks Thai women, the cowardly idiot.

Too many Russians in Thailand, 70% of them are not good people, staying in Thailand for a long time. They are not tourists! Stricter visa rules are required.

Agreed, did the police check his passport? Most Ukrainians (70%) normally speak Russian, so it's easy to make a mistake whether he is Russian or Ukrainian citizen.

Yes, some Ukrainian women are furious and very aggressive indeed.

This is the fate of the so-called "bar girls" (also known as prostitutes). This profession is quite risky, but anyway they choose this profession. In many countries prostitution is illegal, Thailand no exception.

Thailand loves to let in all the rif raf from all over the world. All over the world that is. But on the darker side, the rules will fuss and hassle all the decent folks with absurd visa requisites on submission and excessive bureaucracy procedures.

The idea that the majority of the Russian military is professional is, I'm afraid, a long way from the truth.

It's not about being angels.

It's about being nationalistic.

And you need to understand the way it works. These guys are practically a backup police force.

Deportation would not be enough. 5 years in the slammer might knock some sense into his uncultured head. He would likely be treated very warmly by his fellow inmates who would encourage him to develop some very "intimate friends".

If Thai prisons are anything like American prisons they give very special treatment to tiny men who beat women.

I doubt very much they are all angels. But I doubt very much that they are all wife beaters either.

Why brand a whole group of people employed in a particular occupation, based on statistics for a whole population?

I’m not rubbishing the idea that domestic violence isn’t at too high a level in Thailand, of course it is, but why pick on motorbike taxi riders and claim they go home and beat their wifes and girlfriends.

It’s a bit of a stretch from a story about a drunk violent Russian.

I wouldn’t go too far out on that particular limb.

Sure, there are plenty of Russian military who are nothing but cannon fodder, but the Ukraine conflict is showing that there ARE professional elements to it. They just use the doctrine of shoving cannon fodder out front to increase their own survival hopes.

If the majority of the Russian army weren’t at least semi professional, Ukraine would be kicking their a$$e$ the hell out of Ukraine. And that isn’t what is happening……unfortunately.

Who said that? It's your assumption.

A professional military does not want misfits and discipline problems.

While tourist numbers are very slightly down compared to last year, 7%, the figures for 2026 are expected to be higher than 2025's. Hardly "dwindling".

There was no suggestion, whatsoever, that the woman who was attacked while coming out of a convenience store was a bar girl, or a prostitute.

Bingo. The relaxation of visa rules has brought in the worst of the worst. Hopefully resetting visa exempt entry back to 30 days will help, but they really need to eliminate exempt entry for problematic countries and add an income requirement to DTV. It's quite ridiculous that a retiree has to prove 65k baht income or 800k in the bank, but any bum with a side gig can borrow 500k for a few months and get DTV.
