PM Pledges Reform After Low Corruption Ranking for Thailand

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Thailand has pledged to implement significant anti-corruption reforms following its low ranking in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), scoring just 33 out of 100 and placing 116th globally. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul labeled the ranking as a "failing grade" and acknowledged it reflects high perceived corruption and weak transparency in the country. He emphasized the need for immediate action to restore Thailand's international reputation.

Thailand’s low CPI score highlights persistent issues, dropping by one point from the previous year according to Transparency International's 2025 report released on Tuesday. The government perceives this dip as a signal of ongoing corruption concerns needing urgent attention. Prime Minister Anutin summoned the secretary-general of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) to identify the causes behind the poor score and to develop an effective action plan.

In response, the PACC proposed a series of measures aimed at tackling corruption. Prime Minister Anutin has mandated the PACC to work under Deputy Prime Minister Borwornsak Uwanno, focusing on preparing legal and procedural reforms. The potential changes include revising existing laws, regulations, and possibly drafting new legislation to enhance law enforcement and improve transparency.

Corruption in Thailand is seen not only as bribery but also includes inefficiencies in approval and licensing systems that could deter investor confidence. Prime Minister Anutin has called for strict enforcement of business facilitation laws, directing various agencies, such as the Anti-Money Laundering Office and the Board of Investment, to collaborate on enhancing transparency. He warned that any agency found engaging in corrupt practices would face severe legal consequences.

Looking forward, the government aims to swiftly implement these reforms to improve transparency and reduce corruption. Continued monitoring will determine if these measures are sufficient, with further enforcement actions planned if necessary. The success of these initiatives will be crucial for restoring investor confidence and Thailand’s global standing, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand ranks 116th in the 2025 CPI, indicating high perceived corruption.

  • Prime Minister Anutin is pushing for comprehensive anti-corruption reforms.

  • Agencies involved in corruption will face strict legal action.

The index literally measures perceived corruption, hence the name: Corruption Perceptions Index.

I knew there was the NACC but it's the first I've heard of the PACC.

Sounds like another faceless quango that's quietly filling their boots while "looking into" matters.

Says Mr Corruption himself...don't need to look further than last weekend, the elections

Thailand probably just needs better PR for their corruption. Maybe a huge media and film industry to suppress and indeed normalize it?

Since it mostly takes places within their club, they actually might want to lower/deflect the attention. Just saying...

Yeah yeah yeah.......

Talk is cheap and corruption is ingrained. I think I know what is going to happen here.

There will be no more talk of this until next year when the index is published again and Thailand is ranked even lower

Makes you wonder what other ACCs are out there...

Gotta divvy up the corruption between everyone...

I guess there can never be a Police Anti Corruption Committee as the Provincial graft dodgers have already snapped up the acronym.

I agree- no doubt he said to prompt a deluge of brown envelopes to ensure that the donors names disappear from any list!

Totally fake news. The authorities should probe their own recruitment methods and why money is required to purchase a promotion and merit is never a consideration. Then they should investigate the administration. Then they should probe customs, immigration, all tambon, state and federal recruitment. It is all the same. Filthy from top to bottom. No promotions without payment. Corruption, at all levels. A completely broken system.

This is just more total and complete nonsense from Anutin, who does not have a sincere bone in his body, and his rarely ever in his career has done anything to benefit the people of Thailand other than the ganja initiative.

Every single department in Thailand is corrupt from the local, to the state government, to the federal government. You cannot get a position within the government at any level, the police, customs or immigration without buying that position. Everybody knows that and fortunes are being made on a daily basis.

My woman's sister-in-law just paid 200,000 baht for a lowly 10,000 baht a month position in their local village. It's so common.

Of course this is just a silly dream, everybody's making so much money with this bizarre patronage system, when hundreds of thousands of baht are being paid for a low position and millions are being paid for a high position. The fortunes that are being made and the illegal and illicit funds that are being collected are astonishing and shameful.

No. It reflects high corruption. Fact. And that's just the stuff they know about.

I'm convinced he's just the right guy to oversee an anti-corruption drive. 🤣

I would just like to remind members that despite these terrible statistics, Thailand remains a perfectly fine country to invest in, and to move your life savings into.

No, really, it's fine. 😂

And doesn't "Do you know who I am" prevail?

"Thailand's top court has allowed a government minister to keep his job, dismissing a bid to disqualify him over a past conviction for drug trafficking in Australia." 6 May 2021 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57001674

"The court said it did not recognise Mr Thammanat's conviction because the verdict was delivered in Australia, a foreign country."

Does this mean they will stop or start investigating the millions withdrawn from unnamed bank accounts in 100 baht notes just before Anutin's election 'victory'?

I think its a little more than perceived.

What saddens me is how systemic corruption (and yes, Anutin is as gulity as anyone) has ruined the lives on so many ordinary Thai people. It is also destroying the potential for future generations, unless they are part of the ruling elite. There is a lot of talk about working for Thailand but the reality is .. they work for themselves.

Probably easier and quicker to offer whoever runs the Corruption Perceptions Index a decent bung!
