People out on the common balconies smoking weed all day and night. Firstly, they are complete losers and they are ruining the environment for everyone else.

I AM SICK IS THESE SELFISH PRICKS!

Go take your filthy habit out of the Kingdom, back to California or whatever socialist state you are from!

Data from the Center for Addiction Studies and research published in the Journal of Health Science and Medical Research (link above) estimate that about 7.5 million local people in Thailand were using cannabis as of 2023. That is a sharp rise from roughly 1 million users back in 2021, before decriminalization in 2022, and the figure may be even higher now in 2026. In a country of around 70 million people, that suggests at least 10 percent of the population uses cannabis regularly, with most consuming it by smoking.

Given those numbers, the majority of users are clearly Thai nationals, not foreigners from the United States or elsewhere. Compared with the local population, the number of foreign residents who use cannabis is relatively small.

If the smell of cannabis or other aspects of life in Thailand are a serious concern, it may be worth reconsidering where you choose to live. Many residential buildings have strict rules preventing people from consuming it in the building. In my condo, for example, smoking cannabis is not permitted in units or on balconies, and I have never encountered the smell even once.

Why do you smell it then? Stop smelling it for God's sake!

He's probably considered moving back to the trailer park, but cost is an issue. He's better off buying some air freshener spray and staying in his ฿3000 apartment in Pattaya. Without any windows, you would think the smell wouldn't even be an issue. 😂

Or even take a toke. He wouldn't smell it then, and he might not be so angry at the world anymore.

I just wonder:

Has this dramatic rise in the smoking of POT been driven by deteriorating economic performance locally?

Or, is this Pot-Smoking a driver of decreasing economic performance?

In my view, the smoking of Pot and economic performance are two factors which are intertwined.

Concerning the foul smell of burning weed, whether it be tobacco weed or other weed, on balconies is a shame.

If we analyse the outside airflow of a medium-rise apartment building, the warm air in the building rises, up to the roof.

And this sucks in outdoor air through windows.

The most sucking occurs on top floors.

All this sucking can have deleterious effects on residents of such a building.

Personally, due to this sucking, and for other reasons, I refuse to live in a high-rise, or mid-rise, building, unless all of the windows are sealed.

In China, they do seal the windows, and they cannot be opened in hotels.

But here in Thailand, the windows are opened, and then there is the sucking of air from balconies below.

And, the sucking is very powerful.

There are plenty of building design data sheets which prove this important point.

I will not ONLY live in a detached house.

Less noise.

And, as I say, no sucking.

Note: Also no balconies, if one chooses a single story house, and this is the best option.

Admittedly I indulge about 3 x month. I only smoke half a "j" at a time. I the bathroom exactly over the exhaust fan. I spray a bit of air freshener after and leave the fan on for a while. No one is any the wiser or I would have been caught by now.

The unit above smokes freely from their balcony. I hope I don't get blamed for them.

You should smell Queens in NYC. Folks smoking in Mickey Ds

Those Smoke Buddy devices sold on Shopee work surprisingly well. They are small active carbon filters that you exhale into after taking a hit, and they remove almost all visible smoke and odor from your breath. If a joint is still burning there will still be some scent from the lit end, but if you use a pipe or a bong and clear the entire bowl before exhaling into the filter, there may be little to no smell at all.

They come in two sizes, a regular version and a junior version. The junior is especially convenient because it is smaller and easier to carry around. The larger one does not necessarily filter better, but it typically lasts longer since it contains more activated carbon. The junior works just as well, though its filter may wear out sooner because the carbon chamber is smaller.

If you do a search on Shopee for "smoke buddy", you'll see many of them. Average price is between ฿100-฿200.

When you choose a Condominium that has a non-smoking, non vaping criteria within the building, balconies and grounds except for a designated smoking area, all should be fine.

However, it's not, there are numerous non-resident condominium owners that flout the Law and let their "Investment" out for short term stays.

All under the semi-blind eyes of the "Juristic Management" who provide the signage, that both activities are either illegal or against the rules.

I have had two interactions with persons smoking Cannabis on their balconies.

First, was with a "long term tenant" on the top floor, his room being adjacent to mine, this took over 2 months to resolve despite my initial request for him to cease. It took an actual heated discussion to finalise compliance.

Second, was a "short term rental" directly underneath my unit, when I confronted him, his reply was he had a medical certificate.

My reply "was a script from a "weed dispensary" doesn't give you the right to flout rules and have your acrid aroma invade my living space.

You might need a medical certificate to fly home", rather harsh but worked.

Additionally the "Hotel Receptionists" in the lobby Ave been advised to give strict

Please do not get me wrong I am not against "soft core highs", I have considerably smoked Cannabis and Hashish in my younger years,

In Saudi Arabia we had "Thai Sticks" and does anyone remember the "Lebanese Gold" kilo blocks of Hashish with the gold leaf seal.

Due to the nature of my work for the past three decades (although now retired) it meant complete abstinence.

I am still an avid smoker of Tobacco, yet try to make sure my addiction is not unpleasant towards others.

Unless in a designated smoking zone at this property, I have no right to impinge my toxic fumes on others.

Also, I have never smoked inside our family home back in NZ.

Apologies, for grammar and spelling inconsistency, wireless mouse and keyboard were inoperative, and broad fingers on a Chrome Book gave final result.

Well, I do not know but I just wonder if it might have something to do with foreigner's influence in Thai culture and life. This weed legalization laws seem to be a copy cat of what the USA did in some states. Thailand is going to only get worse.

Canada legalized weed country wide and you can barely notice. The sky didnt fall.

If there are no condo rules stating that the behavior is outlawed there, you are stuck mate.

Maybe get some gigantic fans and point them in the direction where the smoke is coming from.

Off topic. Fist moved here into duplex where a family of females were on the next terrace smoking tobacco. Stationed large fan directly at the cigarette. Yeah, it worked

Not quite true.

Public Health and Legal Status (As of late 2025/Early 2026)

  • Public Nuisance Regulation: Smoking cannabis that causes a smell or smoke to disturb others is a legal violation under the Public Health Act.

  • Penalties: Violators can face up to three months in prison and/or a fine of up to 25,000 Thai baht.

This also applies to condominiums without posted rules and most places that members of the public have reasonable access to.

The argument that it's my balcony, private property etc.. simply doesn't cut it.

Try standing <deleted> naked on your balcony, am sure it wouldn't be long before the BIB came a knocking.

Smoking in the commom area of a condo and outside witin eight meters of the entrance is illegal.

Cannabis is banned in our condo. after previous AGM proposal.

Condo management should help you with this complaint

My condominium complex has notices posted throughout stating those smoking cannabis in common areas and private balconies are subject to a 5k baht fine. It seems to be working.

I confronted one of the pathetic skinny assed losers who has been smoking on my floor. I think he smokes in his room too. Well, let me report back that he isn't smoking anymore after I had a word in his ear.

Disgusting habit. Thailand should deport this layabouts back to SF!

Most weed smokers couldn’t give two monkeys about where it’s not allowed to be smoked, they just do it anyway.

Ignorant and selfish.

May I suggest that rather than that long trip to California, and so they get to see more of Thailand, that you post a suggestion in your foyer that all weed smokers go visit Chang Mai and get off their head there with the joint AND the carbon monoxide, as this condo has had enough. A double whammy for their brains. Case solved.

Some angry people here 😊

Though it is annoying people smoking and burning things.

My view is that if it is medicinal, then fine, but keep it brief and do your best to not annoy your neighbours. A waft for a minute or two, once or twice daily may be acceptable. I can feel my hackles rising 😊 If it were all around, all day, then obviously not. I don't even like the smell of perfume in people passing or their shower gel. But I have to accept that I don't live in isolation, so consideration for each other is important. Do what you have to do, but try to not annoy your neighbours in the process. But the angry people here have gone beyond that. They seem to hate the smokers themselves.
