British ASOS Co-Founder Dies in Pattaya Fall

Featured Replies

Quentin Griffiths, 58, co-founder of online fashion giant ASOS, has died after falling from the 17th floor of his condominium in Pattaya, Thailand. Police and medics discovered him on the ground below his balcony. Officers said there were no immediate signs of a disturbance inside the apartment but have not ruled out foul play pending further tests and a full post-mortem.

The death was reported by The Sun newspaper on 19 February.. A source close to his family said: “It’s a real mystery. The phrase ‘suspicious circumstances’ has been used but we just don’t know yet.”

Griffiths’ death follows a bitter dispute with his Thai ex-wife, who accused him of stealing £500,000, about 21 million baht, from the company they ran together. Last year he was arrested and questioned by police after she alleged he had forged documents to sell land and shares in the firm without her knowledge. He denied the claims, insisted he was innocent and was released after questioning, with the investigation ongoing.

Griffiths helped launch ASOS in 2000. The company grew into a £3 billion global retailer, with the Princess of Wales and Michelle Obama among those reported to have worn its own-label designs. A former advertising executive, he stepped down as marketing director after four years, making £15 million from share sales in 2010 and receiving a further stock windfall in 2013.

The father of three moved to Thailand around 2007. After divorcing his first wife, he married a Thai woman and they had a son and daughter before separating a few years ago.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who has died in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities.” Thai police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall.

I feel sorry for the two children. Growing up in Thailand as the product of a mixed marriage, without benefit of that foreign parent's presence usually does not end well for the child. If there was a dispute and and wrongdoing, those children are now in the custody of a person who may be implicated.

Anyone know which condo unit this is? RIP to this latest balcony victim

Sign in the photo says Elysium.

There are likely as many condo buildings with balconies in Bangkok as there are in Pattaya, if not more, so why is it that we are always hearing about balcony falls and deaths in Pattaya? What is up with that? Anybody have any ideas?

"His death follows an ongoing £500,000 financial dispute with his Thai ex-wife."
Another paper reports it as a "bitter" divorce fight.

Just another suicide, nothing to see here. coffee1

Who "falls" from condo balconies?

C'mon!

That sounds like a cowardly conclusion to an event that was not that at all?

I tend to agree. "Innocent until proven guilty" . There's no way to know what really happened until further investigation is complete. It's very tough if a professional partnership is contained within a marriage for exactly this reason, there is double the stress when disputes arise - if one goes bad then everything will likely go down the tubes. A bad relationship and divorce are terribly hard on children. All of that is now over. The wife is more likely than not a devoted mother OUTSIDE of the marriage and financial partnership. A mother's instinct is nearly indestruct

if they brought in safety measures and sealed condo balconies and windows this would stop, then they would find other ways

Many suicides. Many psychologically unstable and definitly delusional people go there. Pattaya is not a "place for the weak" dare i say. It can easily become extremely depressing. Hence....

Police said they were called to the death at 10.30pm on February 9 and investigation found the apartment door was locked from the inside and CCTV checks showed Griffiths was the only person who entered the room before his death. Officers found two opened bottles of wine and a bottle of water inside the condo. A police source said: “The only person who went into the room was Quentin, so we do not believe there was anything suspicious.”

Have you looked up the name of the condo he was living? It is some 5 star accommodation, not comparable with 90% of other condos in Pattaya

Why is it each time the same pattern?!? The foreigner falls from his balcony, no sign of fowl play ,, it’s always the same .

RIP

............. But it's a very sad ending. Although one could say that it was a quick and painless death.

Without camera footage we will likely never know. Personally I think suicide is more likely. I suffer from depression and it's more common than most people think

I'm <deleted> scared of heights and can NOT comprehend this method of ending ones life, surely much easier & painless... to down a bottle of whiskey with a load of sleeping pills?!

(BTW, suicide would not even enter my mind, I'd seek help, there's always help somewhere)

So many issues- was he drunk, was he depressed, was he pushed?

A real tragedy for him and his entire family

RIP

Was looking good for his age.

The elevator ride is the most common source of foul play in Thailand. The rate at which people fall off a balcony in Pattaya and Bangkok is too high to be normal.

"making £15 million from share sales in 2010 and receiving a further stock windfall in 2013."

With all that cake I sure would jump off a balcony..........😐
