Renewing UK passport

Featured Replies

I have an appointment at VFS in Bangkok this week to renew my UK passport.

Just checking I have all my ducks in a row with anyone who has done this recently.

The documents I will be taking are as follows :

1) Current passport

2) Full colour copy of passport

3) Completed application form

4) Two colour photographs to the correct specifications

5) Printed appointment letter

6) Payment mandate form

7 ) Yellow housebook with printed English translation ( proof of address )

Have I missed anything vital ?

Thanks in advance

I don't understand why people pay an agent when it's so easy, plus you keep your passport unlike with an agent

  • Great hear VFS are more helpful. And for the old 'uns on here, we remember when passport renewal was from the British Embassy on Wireless Road before the start of the downgraded service when it shift

  • I can never understand why people subject themselves to all this hassle... Take your current passport to an agent (I used Thai Visa Express, didn't even need to take photos as they did them there &am

Re 7) i took my driving licence and a bank statement in English.

If you are going by MRT, easier to take the golf cart to the shopping centre

Yes, the cart is a good option. I have been to this place before last year getting my wife her UK visa. Horrible memory as we ate at the food court in central beforehand and my own passpprt fell out of my pocket when I got my phone out. Got to VFS and discovered I had lost my passport. I almost crapped myself. Ran back to the foodcourt and luckily my passport was on the floor under the table we ate at.

Phew....talk about relieved.

Can you offer any details on this golf cart from MRT?

Where do I find it when disembarking the MRT?

Does have a sign on it for the shopping centre?

Have a look at the VFS global website it tells you how to get from MRT to golf cart to VFS

How far is it to walk. I'm missing something. That's my MRT stop.

Exit to plaza and walk to Belle suites.

Surely not far?

500m, says the Google.

It's a longer walk than you think and Google maps is pants being surrounded by tall buildings. Easier to head for the golf cart and relax, plus some people will have mobility issues

+1

There is good reason why nobody in Bangkok walks anywhere, of any distance.

The golf cart is great, just ask to be dropped at the "offices"

Be aware that I think they moved from Trendy building.

The Trendy Building was thought to be too convenient, so after the brilliant idea to close the prestigious British Embassy in Wireless Road and relocate to a condo, they've now moved passport and visas servicrs to a less convenient location on Rama 9.

Passport services were never at the embassy (previously via Hong Kong prior to VfS).

Belles Shoppe is easy enough to get to.....free shuttle cart from Rama 9 MRT to the offices.....up the escalator and walk to the end; far easier than the 28th floor at Trendy - and no agents buzzing around.

Staff at VfS now are noticeably more helpful and empathetic.

I can never understand why people subject themselves to all this hassle...

Take your current passport to an agent (I used Thai Visa Express, didn't even need to take photos as they did them there & then), pay them 12,000 thb which is 1,200 THB pa or 100 THB pm, the Jumbo passport itself accounts for approx 1/2 of this so in reality it's more like 50 THB pm.

And that's it, no need to traipse to Bangkok (Twice).

Pay them an extra 1,000 THB and they'll go to immigration to have your stamps transferred over.

That Belles is weird though, empty shopping centre, would be closed if it wasn't for VFS. Has an Amazon Coffee though, head there if early

Maybe when I lived there or used to visit my mates/dentist at least once per month I would have done it myself but traipsing to Bangkok (twice) is not my idea of easy.

I do admit that it would be nice to have been able to keep my passport & it did inconvenience me a little bit as I needed to move 300K from my Fixed Deposit account to help a mate out but no biggie to be without it for 2 weeks.

My apologies....my recollection only goes as far back as Hong Kong.

I obviously don't qualify as an 'Old Timer' yet...😉

Once in 10 years is no big deal, i like a trip to Bangkok

20 years for me and I can only remember the Hong Kong renewal process. Prior to Hong Kong, the Embassy issued 'new' UK passports, but I don't think they ever processed renewals.

It IS a big deal for those of us with mobility issues, thank you very much!

I could be wrong, but I'm sure the Embassy issued passports. Drop off early in the week, collect end of the week (think embassy staff had Friday afternoons off).

Think it comes down to distance from Bkk and convenience.

The Trendy building was easier to get to by BTS MRT but Belle has better parking.

Trendy building was way too busy and cramped, big queues for the lift. Belle is far superior, no crowding, big supermarket, restaurants, parking. Staff seem friendly.

Could well be true; but prior to around 2013.

I renewed my passport several times at the embassy. My only memories of it are:

Going in to the embassy and gurkhas on security.

Going through the downstairs area, people there for visa interviews, guys in singlets and shorts with thai girlfriends (😄), people arguing with embassy staff.

Upstairs to the quiet of passport applications.

Yes. In the early 2000s all passport related matters and visa issuance was dealt with at the Embassy. Very efficient and friendly sevice it was too. Unfortunately that all came to an end when VFS was contracted to handle all these applications. It was a nightmare in comparison having to go through VFS, although I must say their service has vastly improved since they moved to Rama 9.
