Carrying self defence weapons

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Today I did a walk around in the Pattaya markets

Pepper spray was available and flick knives and the small tasers ( are they effective?

After watching that attack on Phuket where the elderly Australian guy was killed by a steroid thug I am thinking about purchasing

If he had had pepper spray he possibly would of been alive , I don't know about the electric tazer though ,

The point is ,is it legal here in Thailand to carry pepper spray ?

What about the other self defence weapons?

The stun taser I can't even see that doing anything?

In some States of Australia it's now legal to carry pepper spray if you can justify it and bring it back with you to Australia

Kali is a Filipino martial arts of knife fighting so it may be beneficial to older men if you want to carry a knife for that training reasons

Whenever I'm out, I always carry my ATTITUDE. Mind my own business, stay under the radar, respect others. I find my safety is never at risk here living in beautiful Thailand Just avoid the foreigners

  • I believe that none of them are legal to carry. Thais can carry guns..foreigners no. Best option is to avoid confrontation and run away at every opportunity.

You could be right. I'm 6 foot 2, good looking, well groomed, extremely fit, outstanding genes. Not the type of guy a psycho would mess with.

You are a boxer George , why would you need a weapon ,

when you have fists of fury, don't do it ,carrying a weapon

could land you in lock up.

Sure ,but what if that thug kept coming at you like he did with the old guy

You would be at an advantage with a knife in your pocket ,would you use it ?

Good luck you have the exact wrong attitude for Thailand. With the way you look at and treat people here you very well could be at risk.

Sabai sabai, not a problem one.

Why would I even be in conflict with a thug if I'm carrying my attitude.

There's always a reason, sadly it's people having the wrong attitude, looking for conflict.

Mmmmm...I beg to differ

Sometimes wrong place wrong time you bump into someone who wants to look for a fight

You obviously haven't been used to situations where you have been in danger, never been attacked have you Marin ?

Doesn't matter your attitude

It could be as easy as accidentally shoulder bumping someone , or even looking at them the wrong way

Or even king hits by drunks for no reason

So you were assaulted by a monkey and a ladyboy last time. Which one will you use the pepper spray on and which will get the taser?

36 years here and nary a problem one.

Psychos choose the vulnerable, the weak, to attack, they are not completely stupid.

They avoid a challenge.

Best just stay indoors - then you can worry about the microwave exploding instead.

On this specific topic: the inanity of the post, the idiocy of an 'older guy' thinking about carrying a weapon is ridiculous and delusional.

That said: In the car, I carry a one of those extendable batons - but that also has a seatbelt cutter on it and a sharp point to break the glass of the car if stuck inside - Its not there as a weapon, but as a tool in an emergency to get out the car, or to get access to another car if someone else is stuck.

As far as wrong place wrong time - one would have to be extremely unlucky to be in a situation that can not be avoided or de-escalated. There are far greater risks around than the risk of a physical confrontation with another person - The risk of accidents is higher than anything else - crossing roads, uneven pavements, electrical flaws etc...

I don't know about your 'attitude' Georgia - but I've never been in any situation that cannot be avoided or de-escalated.

Last year I was out with a couple of lads after playing football - very late at night, sat outside a bar.

Aussie bogan types on another table, smoking dope, they started commenting loud enough for us to overhear - clearly trying to 'create a situation' - we simply ignored them and carried on our conversations, the idiots got bored and that was that - the situation 'could' have been escalated further by them, but whats the point in getting involved, I (we) would have just walked away - there's no need to be getting involved with anything like that - there's too much to lose, either if the police are involved after we hurt someone, or we get hurt ourselves - or god forbid, we end up on the pages of this forum "Brit involved in....."

No need.

Anytime you go out, just grab one of your kitchen steak knives.

Hard to keep concealed in a bathing suit, however, for most men.

Walk with your head up, with confidence. If a person looks at you, smile and keep going. Most psychos are looking for a victim, as they're cowards and want easy prey. Intentional assaults happen, so it's always best to be with a friend or three, and stay out of seedy places, away from P4P, as they'll many times have others waiting in the wings. As Khunla posted, a flashlight is a legal tool one could use.

If someone bumps into you, learn how to say excuse me in Thai.

You give anyone the wrong look, and you might find yourself attacked by a group here, as it's the usual way here. I'm not the type anyone ever bothers with, but I have never looked for trouble while working or visiting any major city, including working in and visiting NYC a hundred or more times, the south side of San Antonio or many other major and minor cities. Yes, many are robbed in tourist places, away from the crowds, but most aren't out there to hurt but profit from. Your ego, trying to stand up to anyone not actually trying an assault, could get you killed. Walk away you live another day. This isn't the west. This is 5 against 1, and those odds are hard to beat.

A large portion of locals do carry knives, either on them or under scooter seats, but almost all knives are illegal to carry here.

Why?

What are they afraid of?

Or, are they just overly fearful people?

Farmers use them daily, and having them under a scooter seat, and remaining there until needed for work, isn't a problem. The problem is those who carry on their persons with intent to use. Fear is why most people arm themselves, and much is legitimate. That locals are the only ones allowed to carry guns is ridiculous, as most foreigners who live here aren't the ones causing trouble. Most crime is Thai on Thai, and avoiding any isn't hard if you stay away from bad areas and aren't a wise ass.

Also, there is always a small risk that a self-defense weapon can be taken off of you and used against you.

True, if you're going to take that risk,at least practice enough with it.

Absolutely, Georgette. You should arm up immediately.

Pattaya markets are notorious for elderly men being ambushed by some muppet between the durian stall and the flip flop rack. It is basically a jungle out there.

Pepper spray for fruit purchases makes complete sense. Flick knife for negotiating the price of socks. Small taser in case someone looks at you aggressively while you are inspecting some ripe mangoes.

I am sure if that bloke in Phuket had been carrying three consumer grade weapons from a market stall the entire outcome would have reversed instantly. These things are basically force fields. You can't go out without them.

Kali knife training is also a strong move. Nothing deters trouble in Thailand like explaining to police that you are carrying a knife for cultural and martial arts enrichment.

Definitely bring it all back to Australia too. Border control will love it when you declare self defense equipment inspired by a holiday in Pattaya.

Better to be over prepared than caught out with nothing. You never know when a rogue fried grasshopper seller might force you into hand to hand combat.

Stay vigilant, Love. It is brutal out there, especially that aisle between the souvenir magnets and the coffee mugs.

Same thing from him in 15 other topics. After asking how to delete an account on Monday. Happened after he posted about people smoking weed on their balcony that made him angry.
