Iran says US and Israel strikes hit school, killing 108

At least 108 people have died in an explosion at a school in southern Iran, according to a local prosecutor, as the United States and Israel continued large-scale air strikes across the country.

Iranian officials said the school, in the town of Minab in Hormozgan province, was struck during the latest wave of attacks. The incident has not been independently verified, and there has been no confirmation from either Washington or Tel Aviv that the school was deliberately targeted.

President Masoud Pezeshkian described the attack as a “barbaric act” and “another black page in the record of countless crimes committed by the aggressors”.

School near IRGC base

An official said the school had been “targeted by three missile attacks”. It is located about 600 metres (1,968 feet) from a base belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has been among the sites hit during the strikes.

The proximity of the military facility has raised questions about whether the school was directly targeted or caught in a strike aimed at the nearby base.

The BBC has verified video clips showing the aftermath of the explosion, with smoke rising from a damaged building as crowds gathered nearby. Screams and panic can be heard in the background of the footage.

However, the broadcaster said it had not been able to independently verify the reported death toll. International news organisations are often refused visas to Iran, limiting their ability to report freely from the ground.

Rising nationwide toll

The Iranian Red Crescent said at least 201 people across the country had been killed in the broader wave of air strikes, with 747 injured.

Red Cross and Red Crescent officials in Geneva said response teams had been mobilised to assist at the school site in Minab following the incident.

The figures released by Iranian authorities have not been independently confirmed.

Public anger and mistrust

News of the reported deaths prompted anger on Iranian social media, where users expressed grief and frustration.

An Iranian living abroad who opposes military intervention wrote: “The first victims of this war are 40 girls in Minab, hit by a missile attack. Is this the war you cheer for?”

Others directed criticism at Iran’s leadership, reflecting deep mistrust of official accounts.

One user wrote: “Even if the regime did not directly target schools, the deaths of children in Minab remain the responsibility of the Islamic Republic.

“People have no shelters, the internet is cut, phone lines are down, and there has been no warning to keep children out of school. In these conditions, the minimum requirement should be to stay at home.”

Strikes continue amid leadership claims

The reported school strike took place as US and Israeli forces launched repeated waves of attacks against targets in multiple Iranian cities throughout Saturday.

The offensive appears set to continue, despite US President Donald Trump claiming that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, along with several senior commanders, had been killed in the initial strikes.

Iranian authorities have not confirmed Khamenei’s death.

With casualties rising and conflicting claims emerging from all sides, independent verification of events on the ground remains limited.

Human shields. It's the way terrorists do things. Gaza was a prime example of this.

A girls' school! Do you know how rare & precious those are in Arab countries?

Good work, eh. /s

There are multiple issues about this.

-- Is it true?

Of course what remains of the Iranian regime is capable of lying about it for both external and internal propaganda purposes.

-- How can it be independently verified or debunked?

I don't know but it really should be.

-- If true, was it a USA or Israeli bomb?

Based on the publicly announced "division of labor" Israel goes after regime leadership and USA after military targets, that points to the USA and an accidentally missed military target.

-- If true, was it an accident, missed target, a hit missile redirected?

Self explanatory.

If true, what are the chances that the girl's school was the intended target?

I would say there is very little chance.

First of all, the division of labor points to it being from the USA and even if from Israel, there would have needed to be an excuse of "human shield" and we haven't heard that. Yes, it is true Israel has been guilty of war crimes in Gaza, but this is a different war, and only extremist Israel demonizers would just assume that Israel intentionally did this (or did it at all).

Yes of course it is a horrible tragedy if it actually did happen. See above post. I hope you're not assuming it was intentional. though.

An even worse time to be part of the Iranian regime.

We'll see. This is an attempt by Netanyahu to get the US into a never ending war, and your leader was stupid enough to take orders from him.

I see 4 Israelis were killed. Strange how they get more airwaves than 100 Muslim kids.

Human shield, Jing, is just one more excuse for killing. I have no doubt the bombing of the girls' school was a 'mistake'. If there'd been no bombing, there'd still be girls, wouldn't there. Was it really worth it??? Any more than civilian casualties in Gaza were worth it.

The fact remains that Iran was attacked without provocation. Iran did not attack either Israel or the US. Is the fact that Iran may have an unsubstantiated nuclear program in development a provocation to two nuclear powers???

It is a different war! Did Israel really need this extra war? My guess is that the attack on Iran was instigated by a war president but joined enthusiastically by Netanyahu, most likely to keep him out of jail.

Nothing like two nations ruled by criminals, is there?

Apparently the school and the base were previously joined. So clearly a mistake. Doesn’t undo what happened of course.

Iran has been a terrorist using proxies globally for decades. Trying to paint their regime as innocent is laughable.

But if this war actually leads to regime change that's good for the Iranians it would be a near miracle.

I'm not trying to paint Iran anything, let alone innocent. But I have painted Israelis as war-happy. I'm disgusted.

Why didn't Israel send in Mossad, the world's best secret killers, for regime change. I think they would have had no problem 'eliminating' the leadership without war.

Would regime change be good for Iranians. Jing, can't you see that's for them to decide, not the US and Israel?

Ignorant response. Iran is not an Arabic country. Further, education for females in Iran is not a rare occurence, despite your stereotyping. Girls' education has faced challenges over the years, but is not rare.

Strong accusation. Are you saying that the people who operate Liberty Intermediate School and Lakenheath High School are terrorists?

The school hit was constructed for children of members of the Iranian military, more precisely the IRGCN. This Navy organisation operates coastal artillery and corvettes, as well as numerous smaller craft, mostly used in smuggling interdiction.

I went to British military and US military schools, constructed in or alongside military facilities. Were the decisions to build these schools an attempt to use human shields, and that 15 year old me was a human shield? Or its ok for some countries to have schools on military bases, but not ok for other countries.

Oh, so 35,000 dead kids were all "human shields".

You are a bunch of stone cold <deleted>. You've likely never been in war, never seen blown up kids, kids with arms blown off, kids' heads lying in a gutter.

Perhaps you'll see it one day in your own loved ones; then you might begin to understand.

The entire rationale for these strikes is BS. The intel community, both agency and DIA, along with SecState Rubio, have said everything Trump claimed is false. They were polite enough not to say he lied, but he lied.

Iran, at its best (after Trump abrogated the JCPOA) could achieve maybe 50% purity of U235. They were years away from being able to enrich to the required 93% for weapons grade. It's even easy to monitor that, as the high speed centrifuges require extremely sophisticated power input, where they are no fluctuations in the voltage. Iran's power generation is not that sophisticated. Despite the lie from Witkoff, Iran was not "a week away from weapons grade U235".

They had absolutely no ICBM Program, and analysts estimated that even if they embarked on that, they would take 10 years to be able to produce a workable ICBM.

If Trump's rationale is that he cared about the dead protesters, the clown has zero empathy for Americans, much less Persian Moslems. Recall Trump and DOGE shut down the Farsi language Voice of America, so obviously Trump doesn't give a flying eff about the common Iranian people.

Use Occam's Razor...let's see...who are Iran's foes? Well, they are Gulf countries who are monarchies. Zero democracy. Women in most Gulf States are treated like chattel. In Saudi, people are beheaded if they practice Christianity or convert to it.

But....but...Saudi is involved in 3 Trump projects. The UAE put $500 million into Trump's family business. They used the meme coin Trump created in their crypto portfolio. All that adds up to $2 billion. Jared Kushner got $2 billion from the Saudis to manage, despite hm having zero fund management experience. At the time Saudi gave him the money, Trump rationalized it by saying, "Jared is a private citizen who will never work for the USG again." That did not age well. Jared was one of two people (the other being an RE investor friend of Trump) leading the negotiations with Iran.

In contrast to Iran, North Korea DOES Have ICBMs that can reach the US (Hwasong 20). During Trump 1.0, they hoodwinked Trump with love letters, all while speeding up enrichment, figuring how to miniaturize nukes so they could be mounted on missiles, and developed missiles that can reach the US mainland. They execute people by the stadium-load and starve thousands every year. They recently executed children who were watching videos from outside. But....no strikes against the DPRK.

So we have a new foreign war from the "Peace POTUS", we're the world's policeman, we're engaged in regime change, and maybe even nation building......all things Trump campaigned against.

This is a war of choice with no believable rationale. We already have a few "suckers and losers" who have paid the ultimate price for the demented President's diversion from Epstein and his self-dealing with Gulf dictatorial monarchies.

"Iran is not an Arabic country." Yet it practices sharia law and execution rates are some of the highest as is the detention of political prisoners.

The example you cite sounds like a girls' training school for future Revolutionary Guards, no?

Er, idiot. Arabic countries speak Arabic as the main language. The major language of Iran is Farsi. Only 4 countries apply Sharia as the supreme law; Saudi Arabia (Arabic), Sudan (Arabic), Iran (not Arabic), Afghanistan (not Arabic). Other countries have dual systems, with Sharia, so these must be, for you, all Arabic; Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Nigeria, as well as the Gulf states. Bet your sort just thinks of them as "ragheads", "camel jockeys" "abduls" etc.

Your second comment/question is also idiotic. You don't think members of the IRGC have families, have kids, including daughters? The "example" I cite is the <deleted> bombed kid's school you are bitching about. Are you some sort of sick f**ker trying to justify the bombing of a school because it's a terrorist training camp. GTFO.

This is a war of choice with no believable rationale. We already have a few "suckers and losers" who have paid the ultimate price for the demented President's diversion from Epstein and his self-dealing with Gulf dictatorial monarchies.

Great summary. The immediate benefits of this attack are:

(1) The buried testimony of a 14-year-old girl sexually abused by Trump is no longer in the headlines, at least for now. (whew!)

(2) An overseas conflict provides some rationale for meddling in the 2026 elections in some way.

(3) A “war president” generally gets higher approval ratings in nationwide polling. (This worked wonders for Bush II, who managed to convince lots of Americans that attacking Iraq was a great idea; though it’s likely to backfire on Trump, as nobody wants what he’s doing.)

And while, as you point out, the Saudis and Emiratis (and also Qatar) have plowed money toward Trump (Rachel Maddow a few days ago gave a good summary of the “follow the money” argument), making it look like they’ve purchased this attack, and while Iran has been a rival to the Gulf states in many ways (and has been involved in a proxy war with the Saudis in Yemen), I’m not sure how total chaos in Iran would benefit them, at least over the short term, with their airports getting bombed and tourists staying away, the Strait of Hormuz closed, etc.
