Anutin Orders Aircraft to Standby to Evacuate Thais From Iran

Featured Replies

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Air Force Commander to prepare aircraft to evacuate Thai nationals stranded in Iran, placing all relevant agencies on 24-hour standby. The order was issued on 1 March 2026 as tensions in the Middle East escalate. The government said the safety of Thai citizens in high-risk countries is its top priority.

In a Facebook post published at 01:40 on 1 March, Anutin warned that the conflict in the Middle East is likely to intensify and could affect the global economy, including Thailand. Although Thailand is not a party to the conflict, he noted that many thousands of Thai citizens live and work in countries across the region. He said Iran and Israel are of particular concern.

Anutin stated that he is coordinating closely with the Foreign Minister and the Air Force Commander to prepare aircraft for evacuation, with Iran identified as the first priority. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Minister Sihasak Puangketkaew, has established an operations centre to monitor developments and prepare assistance measures for Thai nationals. The Prime Minister said he is personally receiving reports and monitoring the situation from all security agencies.

He has directed the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Interior to be ready to support the operation at any time. All units have been ordered to remain on standby 24 hours a day, for when required. The measures are intended to ensure swift assistance and safe return for affected citizens.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that the crisis will inevitably impact Thailand’s economy, particularly during a period of recovery. He said the government will take every possible measure to minimise economic disruption. Anutin added that his administration would seek to turn the Middle East crisis into an opportunity for Thailand where possible.

ThaiRath reported he pledged that the government would do its utmost to ensure the success of the evacuation mission and deliver results as quickly as possible. Further updates are expected as authorities continue to assess conditions on the ground and coordinate with relevant agencies.

Going to fly an airliner directly into a war zone. And the US and Israel are just going to let it happen. No problem, I'm sure.

You are a little bit out of order here. The US is not going to revoke a rescue airline. They are going to do what they can to support it and it´s safety. They have always done that through history when possible. Here it´s totally possible..

CNN saying air corridors are closed in the Middle East. Perhaps a rescue mission can get in. I wish all the folks stuck in the middle of this conflict can get out safely 🙏

Mr PM, Shouldn’t you have sent evacuation aircraft before the missiles fly

  • Popular Post

From various media reports, there are hundreds of thousands of travelers/tourists, as well as a higher number of foreign workers, stranded in conflict areas in the Middle East. At the same time, there are several hundred aircraft from Middle Eastern countries stranded in overseas countries (including one I note via a web cam at Canberra, Australia airport).

It will take many weeks to move all these stranded people out of the region, even if the conflict ends today.

And how would he have known to do that exactly?

With the build-up of American hardware over the last month heading towards Iran, anyone there must have known what was going to happen.

After the bombs drop Anutin starts an evacuation plan...

Behind the curve as usual.

The Royal Thai Airforce should be warned before they depart that the major players in this war zone are super heavy hitters compared to Cambodia.

The plane will probably end up as a hostage. Honestly though if there are Thai citizens there who should've, would've, could've or didn't make it out, it's a good call.

It's not the Americans or Israel they need to worry about its the Iranians

Without their leader they will be uncontrollable.

UPDATE

Ministry Says 49 Nationals Seek Return From Middle East

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Thai nationals in the Middle East remain safe as contingency planning for possible evacuations intensifies. A total of 49 Thais in two countries have registered their intention to return home, by the morning of 2 March. Authorities said no severe impacts on Thai citizens have been reported so far.

On 1 March, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow chaired a Situation Centre meeting with senior ministry officials, Thai ambassadors and consuls-general across the Middle East via video conference. The meeting assessed the escalating conflict and coordinated assistance for Thai nationals in the region. At 19:45, after more than four hours of discussions, Panidil Patchimsawat, acting director-general of the Department of Information and deputy foreign ministry spokesperson, briefed the media.

He said Israel had launched air strikes on key targets in Tehran and other cities across Iran, followed by military operations by the United States. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes against US naval bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as well as parts of Iraq. Thai embassies in affected areas reported impacts on civilian locations but confirmed that Thai nationals remain safe at this stage.

The situation has become highly sensitive following Iranian media reports of the death of Iran’s supreme leader. The conflict continues and the ministry has urged Thai nationals to follow official announcements closely and comply strictly with local authorities’ guidance. Thailand’s position is based on three principles, close monitoring with serious concern, a call to avoid further escalation that could harm regional peace and civilians, and support for dialogue and diplomacy.

A monitoring centre was established on 28 February, alongside a 24-hour coordination centre under the Department of Consular Affairs to provide urgent assistance. Thais without urgent need have been advised to avoid travel to the Middle East. There are around 110,000 Thai nationals reportedly in the region.

In Iran, the Royal Thai Embassy in Tehran has opened a 24-hour operations centre as security-related attacks continue, with 29 Thais expressing a wish to return. In Israel, the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv has opened four 24-hour hotlines, with fewer than 20 Thais requesting to return. Thai missions in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan are assessing evacuation routes and coordinating with regional airlines.

On 2 March, a meeting will be chaired by the prime minister with the National Security Council and relevant agencies will assess potential impacts on Thailand’s economy, energy supplies and national security. The meeting will also review evacuation plans and airspace closures, as well as support for foreign tourists stranded in Thailand due to flight disruptions.

Wouldn't it be better to transport Thai nationals overland to Iraq, then fly them out?

21 hours ago, it is what it is said:

probably a bit late...

They had plenty of warnings like 2 America battle fleets arriving in the area

It is a war zone. It takes a real idiot to even suggest that aircraft would be dispatched. There is a reason why no one is flying anywhere near the war zone, and a big one is that Iran will shoot down anything it sees. Other countries were warning their nationals to leave Iran weeks ago, with the final warning 2 days prior to the action.

If Anutin was serious he would organize a bus ride to Armenia or Turkiye, away from the conflict zone.

No. iran is sending drones and missiles at and over Iraq. Also, the shiite militias are still feuding with the sunnis. Only viable route is up to Armenia or Turkiye.

I agree-and there are many different groups in the area- all armed and dangerous- I certainly would not want to fly in that airspace at all

Yes, a civilian carrying aircraft in Iranian air space when even Qatar, UAE etc. (effectively whole of ME) have closed their airspace… 🙄.

Can you just read the bloody article and tell me where he has said he is sending a civilian plane immediately in to a war zone? You guys are ridiculous, honestly.

He said he has told all relevant agencies to be on a 24 hour stand by. Not to fly in to a war zone today. To prepare and be ready.

Is it really that hard to understand?

Yes can't see aircraft from other countries flying into Iran to take out their citizens

Maybe flying to countries in the area which now is going to be difficult as well

Not a easy situation to sort out now
