Da Nang, a key tourist hub in Vietnam, is set to expand its international airport to accommodate 20 million passengers annually, doubling its current capacity. The Ministry of Construction announced on March 5 a master plan to upgrade the airport's infrastructure, designed to handle only 12 million passengers. In 2019, Da Nang Airport had already exceeded this capacity, serving 15.5 million travelers.

The expansion plan, which extends through 2030 with a future vision to 2050, includes enlarging the domestic Terminal T1 to manage 14 million passengers yearly and renovating the international Terminal T2 to accommodate 6 million. Additional developments include a new cargo terminal and increasing aircraft parking spaces to 52. The airport will retain its ICAO Code 4E status, enabling it to host large aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, while future cargo capacity is expected to grow significantly.

This initiative follows a substantial administrative merger in July 2025, when Da Nang combined with Quang Nam Province, creating a larger city with over 3 million residents and an area of approximately 11,860 sq.km. The merger also provided Da Nang with a second airport, Chu Lai, enhancing its strategic plan of becoming a logistics hub with a free trade zone and airport city model.

Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan highlighted challenges in implementing the upgrades, particularly due to defense-related land, which restricts private investments. Consequently, public funding will be crucial, with calls for improved land management and noise control. Da Nang's vice chairman, Le Quang Nam, reiterated the city's commitment to the expansion, emphasizing its importance to economic goals.

As Vietnam's third-busiest airport after those in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang International serves as a critical entry point for the central regions. The expansion aligns with broader objectives to enhance its role as a regional logistics and tourism hub, reported VN Express.

One of my favorite airports here on the region, as it's right in the city, very quick to get to and from. So I'm really happy to hear that they'll expand it instead of building a new one far out of town.

Is it fairly quick to get through as a rule?

I will fly in from DMK late morning in April and was unsure what to expect or to try to pay and get a fast track.

I am a Brit, so it's a stamp on entry and no visa worries, plus I am only taking hand luggage.

Immigration can be pretty bad. Not as bad as Ho Chi Minh City, but still, if a few other planes arrive before yours and there's a backlog, you could spend some time. Personally I've never bought fast track for Da Nang, but I would for HCMC.

What I meant was time spent on the road to and from the airport. Typically 15 minutes or less for me.
