Anyone Know Anything About The Yamaha Tzm/tzr, And Other 2 Strokes Available In Los?

Don't worry KRS1 i will take many pics,

I know about the waterpumpshaft bearing , i replaced the one on my old TZR 150, the oil looked like yoghurt.

Mayby the secondhand one the guy is offering is ready for a testdrive, he tolded he sold it recently but took it back due to payment problems ( or technical problems...... who knows)

About registration of 2 strokes i don't know, when i bought the old TZR, roadtax wasn't paid for a few years,and therefore the bike had to be checked at the Transportation office, but the Thai guy i bought it from knew another "guy" who worked at the local transportation office who could fix this problem, ( in the state i bought it, it was surley not going to pass) and for ( i don't remember exactly) about 1200 thb ( shared with the seller of the bike) he got me a brand new green book and liscenseplate.saving me the trouble and the waiting.

So i guess it's still possible.one way or another.

When i end up buying a new TZM in Khon Kaen it's up to the salesguy to get the paperwork done.

I'm taking my Thai wife along for the negotiation and translation ( my Thai isn't that good yet)

Hoping that tommorrow this time i'm the proud owner of a brand new TZM 150 !!!!

I bet that guy took it back after he found out how much fuel it drank ! :) ...If they have the color im looking for, this is going to solve the dilemma of my next bike. What color are you interested in? Please ask them the model year too if you can, i cant remember the last year of production, can you?

Hopefully the capacitors in the CDI haven't dried up. I had one go bad on one of my old TZM'z (#3) and replaced it with a Lekcdi and the bike revved up smoother and more quickly. Wonder how the brake seals are doing.

Good luck. I don't think you'll have any problem with the registration (actually that's in reply to KRS1 also). That dealer told me that if I bought a bike they would take care of the registration and so forth for me (as all dealers do).

I'm not saying its the case with this particular dealer, but usually long-standing dealers have a 'close relationship' with the guys who take care of such matters - thank goodness for corruption!

Actually you're far more likely to run into a dealer unfamiliar with 'farang' who will say the bike cannot be registered in your name than you are to have problems with the legality of the registration itself. But yeah, I wouldn't be too surprised some little peccadilloes come up, such as having to pay a couple of thousand for a new green book, or an insistence it be put in your lady-friend's name.

@ KRS1 I'm not sure want color i will be choosing, have to see them in the flesh first.

yeah, those various rubber seals on the bike worry me a bit, but nothing what can't be fixed, (and a good negotiation point), i'm curious the see and hear that 2nd hand one he got for sale.

Also the tires are likely to be replaced, (years and years standing in a showroom)

@Wana, all my bikes ( 1 new and 2 second hands) are registered in my name never had any problem.

i have a certificate of residence from my embassy and together with my passport and visa it was enough to get them registerd.

Well i'm off for the 230 km drive to Khon Kean.

It's a good little bike. I also have an FZR400 in Thailand. I can say the TZM is pretty much on par with the FZR for acceleration. The FZR makes more horespower, but the TZM is lighter so it evens out. I took pictures of the TZM and the FZR together which I gotta dig out. The height from the ground to the seat is the same, so if you are a bigger rider, it is a bigger sized kind of bike. The TZM is narrower than the FZR though. If you want a hot little two stroke, you won't be dissapointed.

I have always had starting problems with used TZM's because of either cdi's or float valves, how's yours been behaving when in town?

Well KRS1, very good manners in town. I must add, however, I did have the engine rebuilt. She kind of went out on me on a ride from BKK to Pataya. :( Still ran, but no power. On the plus side, the simplicity of the two stroke makes it a very simple and inexpensive affair to rebuild the engine. The floats or the cdi has never given me a problem.

Ever had starting problems? One bike was letting in so much fuel, that it actually accumulated into the exhaust pipe, and with every subsequent kick fuel was spurting out the exhaust. Thats when i decided i better tear the carb apart. Edited by KRS1

Are you sure you can still register 2stroke bikes? Thought they had banned them here (smoky/dirty)?

I had a TZR150; got fed up with the kickstart stripping nuts and the embarrassed of getting a jump start off helpful security. It really hated gashol when I put it in by accident once.

I still have the parts book if anyone wants it; might scan it in if your ask me nicely :)

Something went wrong when posting my report of my visit to Khon Kaen, problaly something to do about the copying and pasting, wrote it off-line in Word

here's another try:

Mission accomplished!!!! I’m now the proud and very happy owner of a brand new Yamaha TZM 150R !!!!

Here’s a report on my trip to Khon Kaen.

Left at around 9 for a 230 km drive to Khon Kaen, with the Garmin I had no trouble finding the location of the dealer and arrived there at 12.

That shop really has got many bikes in stock!!, They must have at least 300 bikes in there, new and old/new models, not a flashy showroom but just bikes parked close to each other and the workshop being part of it all, in the back a large warehousesection for spareparts. Customers driving in and out some dogs walking around, indeed a bit of a odd shop,( family runned) but the kind of odd i like.

And they got what I came for: I counted total of 7 brand new TZM’s and 1 with 600 km’s on the clock. 4 purple/blue / white with grey wheels 2 red/white with black wheels and 1 black/blue with purple wheels, the secondhand black/blue one with 600 km’s had grey wheels.

According from his purchase papers from Yamaha they where produced in 2539 or 2540 1996/1997) 15 years!!!

For the rest ( next to numerous lines of Fino’s and Fiora’s) they had a lot of new underbone 2 stroke bikes , Tiara’s , Mate’s, JR,s ,Bellers. some Honda Dash’s there where dozens of those.

Also they had many second hand 2 strokes ( he trades in bikes) I counted ( the bikes which interest me) 2 TZM’s a TZR , 2 NSR RR’s 1 NSR SP, and a few Honda LS 125 ( Beat) also a Yamaha lookalike of that model which i never saw before named Touch.

With me walking around my wife was already chatting with the saleslady ( daughter of the old shop owner) my wife finally could negotiate a price of 58.000 thb ( they asked 60.000) (not much of a discount, but when I would have come into that shop alone, the first thing I would have said is SOLD), the old guy mumbling something like, I loose money on those bikes, before they where 68K , well that’s what you get buying in such large numbers, I expect many of those old 2 strokes will sit there for the end of days.

For the 58K they do all the paperwork, registration, insurance, licsenseplate (green book in my name) and they even threw in 2 helmets and 2 jackets.

I went for a red/white one with black wheels and… white mirrors. After the deal was closed some mechanics took the bike out from the line and it was rolled into the workshop section.

They assured me take they would check the bike very well and I have to say, they did.

A few mechanics worked on the bike for 4 hours!! They took of the fairing, carburettor and changed all the fluids, the carb was cleaned and some rubber lines fuel/water where replaced.

I guess once in a while they sell one of these 2 strokes so they know the drill.

Went to get some food with my wife and just came back to see it being fired up for the first time in 15 years, they did a good job, checking a good flow of 2T oil from oilpump letting out the air. And it runs perfect!! Putting everything back, some cleaning, and the older mechanic who did most of the work , threw himself into the busy traffic for a testdrive ( please… keep it easy on the revs) when he came back he had a smile on his face…. He raised his hands an I think he meant he did a wheelie on it. some final checks and the bike was lifted into my truck.it was now already 5 o’çlock a 4 hours drive back back home, so 9 o’clock I parked the car at home with a brand new TZM in the back. tired but satisfied!!!!!

This morning took it out of the truck and parked it outside my workshop and make some pics.

I can’t still believe it, factory barcode stickers still on it, 5 km on the clock, instruction manual, toolkit it’s all there.

First of all I will give it a proper cleaning and polishing, ( it collected quite some dust over the years) and going over it myself, then will take it out for her maiden trip and see all is working properly.

Even with the possibility in the near future that some work have to be done on the bike (due to the long sitting of the bike), for me it’s worth it.

I will keep this bike completely stock and will use it for daytrips on my favourite roads, keeping a bit of Thai bike history lively.

Parts still easily and cheap available everywhere.

The rush when a proper 2 stroke bike comes into his powerband you will never get on a similar cc 4 stroke

I left the shop with a good feeling, friendly upright people, ( well they must be friendly i’m buying a bike from them, but being friendly when buying something is not always the case in LOS) they even trusted me transferring the remaining 8000 with ATM the next day. (I reached my ATM limit)

They found it quite funny we came 230 km’s to buy a bike from them, (as if there are so many other shops around which are still selling new TZM’s )

Well for a bike like this,I would be willing to drive a lot more.

I was looking for a TZM for a while but the ones up for sale around here ( from Locals) are in a terrible shape, i’m in the process ( near completion now) of giving my Honda NSR SP a major technical overhaul ( the bodywork and all were still in a good shape) and spend on the engine alone already 30K, together, with many new parts, Tyga exhaust, and the purchase price I’m looking at a lot more than this brand new TZM.

Congrats on your purchase. I was going to share some pictures of my TZM 150 compared to my FZR 400. Took these pics last time I was in BKK. The TZM is roughly the same size as the FZR. The saddle heights are essentially the same compared between the FZR 400 and TZM 150. In the pictures keep in mind that the FZR is on a bike stand. If you are a taller Falang, then the TZM will fit your height better than the NSR. (Which I have also owned.)

The TZM is a few inches narrower than the FZR, and of course the wheels are narrower too. The TZM is probably roughly 2/3ds the weight of the FZR.

Powerwise the TZM is not "on par" with either the Ninja 250 or CBR 250; the TZM is faster. It is more on par with the 400 CC bikes in short, in town traffic. From owning both I can say that in town acceleration is comparable to the two when soi hopping. It is only on the freeway that the cc differences are really noticeable. The FZR being a larger cc, 4 cylinder bike, and heavier is much more stable on the freeway and has much better freeway acceleration. The TZM takes a while to get up to freeway speeds and once there, there is not much left for sudden emergency acceleration. (It's going to struggle a bit.) The TZM is also more unstable at freeway speeds due to its light weight. (Sometimes it feels as if it will go airborn.) Actually, it's light weight is kind of scary at freeway speeds.

Awesome, i worship you man ! I think i might get that last red/white one. But i have to go back to the US for a while so id have to find a place to store it or pray its still there when i get back.

Did she start up easy this morning? I remember when i bought a new NSR, i'd have to pull the choke and no throttle to start it , or else it wouldn't start. Took it for modifications the first week i had it, guy thought i was nuts. Love the sound of the TZM's exhaust valve when you turn the key on. These bikes just roar when you open them up. Top speed test yet ??? LOL

Amazing Thailand! Stunned!

I was in the Honda dealer in Sapan Kwai today and they have a TZM CDI, front and back brake calipers, if anyone is looking for these items. Also had an RXZ caliper (assume front as I think the back is a drum brake). The TZM brakes will fit a TZR and a VR. Again looks like they have been waiting a while for customers...

I am going back on Monday to pickup some NSR SP parts, if anyone wants me to inquire about them. Otherwise, you know where they are.

I had to drill out the bleed valve on my TZR brake as it seized and had to fit an oversized valve (for a car). If I had know about these I would have bought a new brake caliper.

You can 'store' it with me, KRS1 - I'm just an hour's drive from that shop. Heh heh.

2 strokes dont start with the throttle reved. open the choke, kick it, let it run a bit, then pip the accelerator. we had a belle before and that didnt even need the choke. bought that back in 1996!

When sombody like the tzm ,i have 2 bikes .

And good ones rebuild by my own .

And about 2 strokes no problem its easy for me to ghet parts ,we driving here around in a club with 50 screamers.

Amazing Thailand! Stunned!

Yesterday i finally took my brand new TZM out for it's first ride, after given it a proper cleaning and waxing ( it needed that) At doing that not much revealed itself, just a bit of corrosion on the chrome bits of the footrests and 3 minor spots of corrossion on the front rim, ( sanding them and giving it a bit of paint to seal the alloy,did the job) The paintwork didn't even had any scratch, remarkble after 15 years of storing and moving around in that shop.

Well time to hit the road, a short ride ( 40 km) today, it started up with the first kick, only choke open, no throttle.

According to the instruction manual the first 500 km's max rpm 6000 then 500 untill 1000 km's max rpm 7000 and i want to stick to that , not easy and a bit of frustrating every time having to shift up just at the point the bike wants to go ( 6000rpm, the powervalve opens up at that rpm).

A few times i went a little bit higher: 7000 rpm, but i could hold myself not going higher, that first 1000 km's are going to be a very long 1000 km's. .

At around 5000 rpm's with very low throttle openening it was a bit stuttering, but opening the throttle a bit more and that was gone ( it wants more juice)

Temperature staying at the good range of the gauge, Clutch is very light, shifting up and down very smooth, brakes feeling ok, a bit soft front suspension ,riding position comfortable, it's a good sized bike for us farangs, about the same size then a ninja 250 cbr 250.bigger then the NSR sp ,

Back at home, a walk around reveals no problems, no fluids leaking .... good.

Before reaching the end of the run in period, i will replace the tires with fresh ones.

when you decide to purchase that last red/white TZM you can also store it at my place, no laughs here i'm seriuos.

The RC valve its 10 more beter like the one from honda,when the rc valve schut open its make a deep sound in the tzm, i go now always for the tzm.

Before always honda sp,later want to try a different bike.

Wheelie ! Glad to hear there aren't any leaky seals, i hope the shock seals stay good for you. Bike looks awesome. Are the tires looking dry after 15 years ?
