When I first starting using facebook it was a fun way to keep in touch with mates, hook up with old freinds & to have a bit of fun answering quizzes & doing he other applications but just recently facebook have been requiring you to send requests out to at least 20 of your freinds before you can complete an application or quiz.

This is just them trying to force me to spam all my mates & for them to spam me, so I have now started to just ingore all the invites cause imo it is bullshit, if I want to do an application then I shouldn't be forced to invite 20 people before I can do it or see the results.

Shame on Facebook & their attempts at forcing more people to participate in the website.

Rant over :o

Call me old-fashioned. Call me old! But I don't participate in FaceBook. It seems kind of pointless since I can email my friends just as easily.

Thats what I am going to go back to doing cause without the option to have a bit of fun with the applications, games & quizzes (without the need to send it to 20 of my friend everytime) then it has no benefit over email.

Point is, it used to be fun but now they are making silly conditions on using the site& ruining it imo.

I know what you mean Boo.

Have you seen the group that has formed, objecting to this? I got invited to join it last week and did do. With enough people in the group it might convince Facebook to reconsider. If not, i'm outta there also. Upto them :o

I completely agree! I am getting a bit tired of them, and it is another thing to do to waste your time. I initially started Facebook to stay connected with my girlfriends in Bangkok (I liked sending the virtual drinks, etc.), but discovered another benefit when long lost friends started finding me. So, I keep it for that reason, but I refuse to get caught up in the maintenance aspect of it.

didn't know about that group mrBJ, whats it called pls as I will def join :o

I'm with sbk on this one. My wife spends way too much time on facebook. I already spend too much time on the web!

Call me a 'Luddite' if you like, but it just seems like too much hassle!

Call me an IT Pro, for that is what I was for many years..... I also find Facebook, WAYN, and a whole host of others to be a pointless waste of time. The people that I really want to stay in contact with, well, I have there email addresses anyway. If I do need to track someone down that I went to school with, grew up with, served time with (joke) I know how to do it.

A conversation I had with one of the younger ex-pats a few months ago.

"hey Col you signed up to Facebook, it's way cool"

"Facebook ..... what's that? " (I already knew)

"It's great, you can stay in touch with all your friends"

" really .... how did you find out about it? "

"my friends emailed me about it"

"so what's the difference? you can talk to your friends with email"

"yeh, but with this we can share pictures with each other, me, my kids, everything"

"ok, and these pictures can be seen by every single identity thief in the world, every pedo with a net connection and all the other unsavoury individuals out there?"

"<deleted> off, you don't know what you are talking about"

Ho hum

A while back, I hoped that we were passing on a developing world to the next generation of pioneers. It hasn't taken that long for me to realise that we are actually passing on a screwed up planet to a bunch of imbeciles ..... I wish them luck.

Wise and profound words there Taddy!

I have never joined and won't either. Facebook are giving out personal info to commercial companies

Is this a fact? If so, any info to back it up?

Thanks seonai, I'll check out the links when I have time.

Good topic :o

Best way to use Facebook is to avoid all those applications and just block any that try to invite you. Cuts down on the spam massively. By the way, most applications aren't created by Facebook themselves so all this "first you must forward to 20 people" bullshit isn't actually Facebook's doing. Check this group though, over 130,000 members so far:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10117075246

The most annoying for me are the fun wall / super wall / advanced wall / etc. - quite how Facebook have allowed something which has just re-started all of the chain letters and "send this to 20 people, press F6 and somethgin crazy will happen" rubbish. Just when I thought that kind of crap had disappeared from the web, Facebook starts it all again!

Even worse are the sometimes truly offensive pictures which can be circulated and which, when scrolling down someone's account, you can't help seeing. And then can never un-see again, but you wish you could. That, for me, is the main thing Facebook need to address.

ok, and these pictures can be seen by every single identity thief in the world, every pedo with a net connection and all the other unsavoury individuals out there?

There is no obligation to make your profile public, but you still have a point.

All these various application providers have access to your data, and Facebook and Myspace must be the greatest thing since sliced bread for private detectives, government agencies, advertisers and so on - people freely sharing their tastes, habits and personal life.

Good articles. Thanks Seonai.

Sounds like an Amway marketing scam. :o

Myspace is so much better. I keep in touch with all my friends around the world through it. :o sound like an add dont i

I don't even know what the heck it is except for that you put your picture there and send messages to your friends. I've never seen it...don't even know what I would have to do if I wanted to see it....same for myspace......for me ThaiVisa is about as ridiculous as I want to get which I think definitely rules out those other places......I think the Hot Bum/Good Ass thread might be the start of a new web concept called Assbook....that might interest me...don't know.

Chownah

I also use facebook, but only for the fact that I have been able to get in touch with old friends who I have previously lost all contact with, for that reason alone its brilliant.

As for that 20 invite nonsense. Just ignore all requests or remove applications that call for it. Plus you can often skip the "invite 20 mates" bit.

I prefer BEBO, less complicated.

Love the Facebook map tho'.

Where ya have travelled around the world.

Tis great..... :o

Anyone ever heard of a postcard ?

You need an address for that, all you need at facebook is the name of your friend and your school.

Anyone ever heard of a postcard ?

No, what's a postcard? :o

I love it.

I've met up with loads of people I've lost touch with over the years, if I don't know them or don't like them I reject their request.

My profile can only be seen by the people I've chosen as friends, then its my fault if a photo gets into the wrong hands.

Don't put your birthday/date on your page, or anywhere else on the web for that matter.

It is better than simply e-mail as you can flick to friends pages, see what they're up to. Leave messages on their page, check out the photos from Sat night that Baz took....! Its the same as a lot of things, learn how to use it, it can be a cool addition to your time wasting or, don't use it....

....as for this add 20 friends, the group out to ban it will hopefully gather pace, it is a ridiculous annoyance.....!

I find it far easier than My-Space and I haven't used Bebo so can't comment.
