2AM BAR CLOSING

Apirak asked to help

Chalerm wants checks against young patrons

Published on February 26, 2008

In his first inspection of the Bangkok Metro-politan Administration, Interior Minister Chal-erm Yoobamrung yesterday asked Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin to help enforce the 2am closing of entertainment venues.

Using its municipal policemen, the BMA should also ensure people younger than 20 do not attend these venues, Chalerm said, adding that Bangkok streets would be safe and free of crime under his tenure.

Chalerm said he would tackle drug problems using a pro-active but non-violent approach based on law and order. He said BMA officials and municipal policemen will help monitor crimes and criminal activities in support of local police.

He said a scenic observation post should be built in Bangkok to serve tourists, and proposed a site near a lake in the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly compound off the southeast Ratchada-phisek section.

Chalerm said the post would also comprise convention and business centres to serve foreign tourists.

He promised Bt100 million to support the BMA if it accepted his idea to build the tourist installations.

The minister praised Apirak and the BMA for keeping the Chao Phya River from Nonthaburi down to the sea outlet free of water weeds, at the suggestion of Her Majesty the Queen.

Chalerm and Apirak appeared friendly during the inspection and at the press conference and both sat together for a photo call.

Night venues found to be operating after 2am will ultimately face closure within seven days.

"After 10pm, Bangkok streets must be free from crimes, rapes, mugging and brawls. BMA municipal policemen will work with local police to make sure these crimes don't happen," he added.

Chalerm said he told Apirak to solve problems about coastal erosion along the coastlines in Bang Khun Thian district, the only Bangkok district facing the sea.

If anyone fancies raping, mugging and brawling before 10PM, there shouldnt be a problem.

:o:D :D :D What fantasy world are they living in? The police are out there shooting tourists and they expect to wipe out crime after 2200. There will be peace in the Middle East and Hades will be frosty before that happens.

Charlerm's greatest contribution to keeping crime off the streets would be to make sure his thug sons don't go out after dark :o

Khun Chalerm of all people, :D:D be on the lookout for his bad boy is my guess. :o:D

Is not the legal "drinking" age for Thais 18?

"After 10pm, Bangkok streets must be free from crimes, rapes, mugging and brawls. BMA municipal policemen will work with local police to make sure these crimes don't happen," he added.

The only way to minimise the streets of crime etc is to "police the police", since many police are corrupt.

Is not the legal "drinking" age for Thais 18?

Yeah, but the age for being in a bar or club is 20. 18 year olds can buy beer or whiskey at 7-11 and drink at home, but they can't do it in a bar.

Sorry about that. I forgot that "logic" doesn't exist here.

So, an 18 year old can go to 7-11 & buy 47 bottles of beer, drink it anywhere (& possibly cause trouble) but the same person cannot go to a bar/nightclub, where there is quite possibly "security". Obviously, the same person cannot possibly score drugs from others on the streets because the BIB are ever so vigilant. This is yet another "cosmetic" fix by the "powers that be". Only 2 words..."Amazing Thailand".

EDIT: I forgot about that BIG drug deterrent...the murdering spree conducted by the Thaksin government. That should be effective...shouldn't it?

According to the signs in 7-11 the age for buying alcohol is now also 20. Not that anyone cares.
