Now fer a bit of culcha.

How about Hinge & Brackett, ably supporting, in a lead role, Mr Gerard Hoffnung. and to keep the musical accompaniment fully up to scratch Mr Victor Borge.

Wow I didn't think anyone else would have heard of Hinge & Brackett - one of the funniest stage shows I ever had the pleasure of watching - They are In.

and I have to totally agree with Thaddeus, Victor Borge was a Genius

(He could even play the "Blue Danube" upside-down. The sheetmusic that is and not the river or himself...... :o .)

I'm not sure which considerate & friendly moderater changed the thread title - but thanks - maybe it is now far clearer and to the point.

Sorry - Plead guilty there. I should have noted to that effect, but TOT & dropped connections put paid to that at the time.

I'm surprised, if you know Victor and Hinge & B, you should know and appreciate Gerard Hoffnung. Look out for a BBC recording of his address at the Oxford Union. Made in December of 1958. it was one of the funniest pieces of stand-up ever. Still capable of requiring rubber knickers to listen to today, 50 years later and after hearing many hundreds of times. He unfortunately passed away in 1959.

Having mentioned Stand-Up. A true genius from the other side of the pond must not be missed out: George Carlin.

The Americans, not to be outdone, have someone equivalently masterful at the use of language. His name is George W. Bush.

There's no way I'll second George W! There's no way he'd fit in, he'd take it all too seriously and believe his own hype!

A 'Brian' is the ideal accolade!

Georgw W's nomination should be reconsidered.....

A great set of photos sibeymai, and you have earned yourself an Order of Merit for outstanding research.

Unfortunately our judges have reconsidered and still are unable to allow the nomination of G.W.B. We will however, happily accept any of the chimps pictured should they receive the necessary 2 votes.... :o

The earliest thing I ever remember laughing out loud to, was a scene from a Stan and Ollie movie.

The phone rings and Stan picks it up, listens for a couple of seconds, and then says.

"it certainly is"

And then hangs up.

Ollie asks him who it was, and Stan replies

"I don't know, this lady just said it's a long distance from California"

Still funny now for me. So can I nominate both of them please.

A bit like the Goons; The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexley On Sea... or Bud and Lou (have they been mentioned already?); Who's On First?

I think the Marx Brothers are worthy of induction. Some of the best one liners ever.

The Grouch man set the standards of what to do with cigars until Bill Clinton came along.

Eh hum.................Bexhill-on-Sea !!!!! ( bloody youth of today ....)

Who remembers.......

Marjorie Main, Percy Kilbride.

Ma and Pa Kettle

...movies not to be missede when I was a kid.

No comedic hall of fame is complete without John Cleese and the guy who played Manuel (Gerald Sachs or similar).

Andrew Sachs or Andreas Siegfried Sachs, born in Berlin in 1930. Family exited Germany in '38 for obvious reasons.

Did you know he really suffered for his art in FT, being struck on the head by a saucepan wielded by John Cleese and being burnt by acid, leaving scars, for which he was awarded compensation by the BBC?

Regards

PS A nomination for David Gunson, whom I heard as an after dinner speaker years ago.

I'll second Manuel! But it mush be Manuel. "Me speak very good english. I learn it from a book!"

I think this post seconds Ronnie Barker and on the American side for balance offers either Chris Rock or Robin Williams, they all bring quick wordy wit - with a mixture of corse and clever each has it's moment.

TC seconded.

Two lions eating a clown, one turns to the other and says "Does this taste funny to you?"

Just like that, not like that, like that. :o

Mel Brooks

Eddie Murphy

John Belushi

Chevy once played drums with Steely Dan.......Honest.
