I have a small establishment in Chiang Mai and have been struggling to figure out what music to play. So it is now up to you all to decide. It is also "up to you" to choose how much of each type of music you would like to hear during the course of the night.

What are some songs you want to hear? I have a selection of about 30,000 songs, so if you like it I probably have it.

BB recently requested "Secret Agent Man" but unfortunately I did not have it so I have included it in the link below. :o

Seems like a rather blatant attempt at promoting one's business :o

But Mr Mobs, unless you tell us the name of your establishment, how are we know where to go to get our fill of our chosen tunes?

Check out the Bully Pub near Nana Plaza for the best selection of music that I've ever heard outside of the US or UK. AMAZING classic stuff with lots of wonderfu, obscure l tracks that I've never heard of mixed in! :o

That's precisely why I didn't include the name. I am not trying to promote the business. I know what I like to listen to but that doesn't mean you would like it also.

Ahh go on be a devil, give us a clue. An anagram of its name perhaps?

I very seldom visit bars, so my vote would be irrelevant to this poll. However, when people ask me about my favourite music, I can't help but think back to the late 70's/early 80's in Bangkok. There was an English language radio station that had a weekend programme from about 6pm Friday to 6am Monday, (if I remember right). "The Quiet Storm" played almost exclusively album tracks from many different genres and introduced me to some of the best music I have ever heard. It made many a Friday evening traffic jam survivable.

As an aside. Why no Jazz or Blues in the choices? Now, a blues bar I might visit!

I like 1980's hair bands, modern heavy metal, Thai Rock and various flavors of Techno.

Funny that places like Mandalay have a huge area for Techno but no one stays there, The majority of Thai people hate it, well maybe just the majority of people.

I was in Riverside last night, and the 2 resident bands play covers of pop, rock and classic rock, theyre good.

On your survey it says "other" "please specify"

So where do I specify ?

Here ?

Ok, how about some Jazz, Jazz Funk, Acid Jazz, Funk, Blues. A bit of classic rock wouldnt hurt.

All at a volume where you can still hold a conversation.

Nice comfy sofa or arm chair. Dark & cosy.

No one bugging you.

No <deleted> TV, even with the sound off.

Oh shit, Im sounding like my Dad.

If you do it anything like this, let me know where to find it.

Good idea. The music played in bars is generally dreadful. If I ever hear Hotel California again I'll not be responsible for my actions.

I would like to hear some that's relatively recent (within last 20 years at least or so), and not R and bloody B. The band in the Inter bar have been persauded to play some modern indie rock, such as Radiohead and {shudder} Coldplay, but they absolutely hate it - they much prefer the tired old ground of "classic" rock. The irony is, most punters seem to like the newer stuff more, and actually offer tips to get them played.

Oh, and how about the follwoing categories;

indie

punk

alternative rock

heavy metal

reggae

Seems like you've just listed all the loathsome music genres to me...

Are you referring to me Mobs? If so I have no recollection of requesting that song. However after plying me with that Japanese dishwater I might have said anything. I do believe I proposed to one of your staff.

This link is to one of my old favourites, it reminds me of one of my ex-wives.........

You're never going to get a straight answer to what people want. Tastes of expats differ wildly because ages and backgrounds are so different.

If you go into niche music you'll make those who don't like it unhappy, and if you shoot for the mainstream, everybody is going to be equally unimpressed.

Personally I think the most important point is that you either go for loud live music, or keep the music down enough so people can have a conversation without screaming into each other's ears.

Here's a selection from my current Winamp playlist, all decent bands I think:

Pavement

Black Sabbath

Beth Orton

Grateful Dead

Air

Otis Redding

Black Crowes

Rodrigo & Gabriela

Dinosaur JR

The Smiths

Jack Johnson

Tom Petty

You am I

Stone Roses

Blondie

AC/DC

Smashing Pumpkins

Elliott Smith

The Cardigans

Lee 'Scratch' Perry

Nick Drake

Paul Simon

Gladys Knight & the Pips

Ministry

Soundgarden

Nine Inch Nails

Johnny Cash

Metallica

Eddie Vedder

Guns n' Roses

Radiohead

De La Soul

Kraftwerk

Aerosmith

bob hund

Hawkwind

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Nick Cave

Alpha Blondy

Butthole Surfers

Ride

Teenage Fanclub

The Cure

The Magic Numbers

White Stripes

The Datsuns

The Fivestairsteps

Helmet

The Go-Betweens

Arcade Fire

Tracy Chapman

My Bloody Valentine

Something for Kate

Modern Dog

Sly & the Family Stone
