Who is Sam Owens?

Mrs Owens' little boy.............

On a sad note, speshully for older AFL fans.

Allan 'Yabbie' Jeans has been given a final lap of honour at the MCG as part of a moving funeral service.

About 1,000 mourners gathered at the MCG members' dining room to farewell the legendary coach.

Famous faces from Hawthorn, St Kilda and Richmond football clubs mingled with family and friends.

Jeans coached for 26 years, taking St Kilda to its only premiership in 1966 and leading Hawthorn to three flags in the 1980s.

The four premiership cups that he helped St Kilda and Hawthorn to win were on display at the service.

Ross Smith from the St Kilda football club said Jeans touched the lives of all who knew him.

"He was not just a great football coach as his record shows, but he was a wonderful life coach," he said.

"He was coach, counsellor, psychologist, conditioner and manager all in one."

Peter Jeans says his father was a generous and dedicated man who will be greatly missed.

"For him, the love for his family was his lifeblood," he said.

"Dad was a man of absolute honesty and integrity."

A procession made its way around the MCG playing field and through a guard of honour made up of players he coached over his career

Thanks Pete, I'd not heard about his passing. RIP.

Rusty lot, the ABs, but a win is a win.

Now, our acroos the ditch mates, have to clobber Sth Africa tonite, Sat.

Support them guys, bound to be on TV.

The OZ train was derailed by Samoa, and the Wallabies must get back on track against the Boks. The team was embarrassed by Samoa; the Wallabies' brand was embarrassed.

I bet it really stung Robbie Deans.

Some time ago, on another thread, I mentioned a dog about whom a book had been written and a film was coming. Here it is:

Some of the scenery brings back memories. I was working up there at the time.

Gunna look out for "Red Dog".

I remember and enjoyed so many OZ outback memories.....

"The Overlanders Trail", if my memory serves me right, saw it many times as a kid.

I neva forgot the theme song.

The the unforgettable.... "Bush Christmas".. classics in my eyes.

No fancy FX, just natural.

The Overlander Trail.

We're on the Overlander, Overlander trail

Where only sheer determination will prevail

Men of hussy with a job to do

So they'll stick and drive the cattle through

And 'though they sweat and curse

They know they surely must

Keep on the trail that winds ahead

Through heat and dust

All sons of hussy and they will not fail

They're on the Overlander, Overlander trail

Trying to remember the star of the movie, my alzheimers..... grrrrrrrr.

Just slipping my mind at the mo.

Those last couple of lines in the theme song seem a little odd. Is it about a cattle drive by a bloke with alzheimers (or was it the dog that had the disease - hence the growling)?

During WW2.......

Fearing a Jap invasion, all the cattle up north were being driven to safety, if I remember rightly.

Those are the words sung by Slim Dusty. (Check YouTube, must be there)

Typo, hussy should be Aussy... I just copy pasted, did not read and check.

The Overlanders: a 1946 Australian-British film about drovers droving a large herd of cattle 1600 miles overland from Wyndham in Western Australia through the Northern Territory outback of Australia to pastures north of Brisbane, Queensland duringWorld War II.The star, the one and only....... Chips Rafferty.

I think I might have seen it as a nipper. Your mention of Chips Rafferty reminds me of those couple of 'Smilie' movies, which were on regular repetition on Aunty. Mind numbingly boring, most of those early era outback-type films. Poor old Oz has never had much of a movie industry - except with recent American money. And all of those old Crawford Studios TV shows (and similar)... pathetic. Oz did manage to cobble a few decent comedy series together, and some live entertainment such as Kennedy, but that was about it. I've always preferred British comedy (and some of the drama series) - far more professional than Oz efforts. And it's still hard to go past Hollywood or the UK for quality blockbuster films.

Ealing Studios helped produce Overlanders and many more.

Funniest Ockor movie ever, Nino Culotta's.....

They're a Weird Mob.

Read the book, laffed out loud in the tram going to work.

Movie almost as good.

ALL BLACKS 30 v 14 WANNABEES

Gonna be an All Black victory in September - but which one?

So, from where does try-scorer Manu Tuilangi hail?

I read the England team is a United Nations, including 3 kiwi born players.

Manusamoa Tuilagi, The youngest of six brothers in the Samoan rugby dynasty to

have played for Leicester Tigers. (http://www.rfu.com/)

First it was England trying to steal the All Blacks' thunder.

Now three other teams at the Rugby World Cup have opted for black alternate strips. Wales, Canada and Japan are jumping on the black bandwagon.

The All Blacks will play both Japan and Canada in pool-play. New Zealand will wear their new tight-fitting black jersey in both games, with Japan donning its traditional red and white hoops, and Canada its red jersey. But under tournament rules, a toss of the coin will decide who wears what if there is a clash of uniforms.

If ya can't beat them, join them........LOL

He's truly British - born in Samoa, has four brothers who have represented Samoa, was an illegal immigrant in UK (for six years) and plays for Leicester. Gotta be good for an English jersey - look at our cricket team as well.

But we're not the only ones that do this - I recall that when Martin Johnson was a young lad he went to the land of the long white cloud to improve his rugby, and was told that if he stayed he would be offerd an All Black shirt.

Congratulations Robbie and ya boyzz

A question for all you Antipodeans. ...................

A NZ couple won the mixed pairs bowls competition at our club at the weekend. Is this the first time in History Kiwis have got to a final of a sporting event without chocking ?

With chocking and Kiwis there's usually sheep involved rather than sport.

Chocking.

I confess I don't know the term as applied to sport in general, unless your sport is wagon cross country racing.

I believe some woodchopping events use chocks too.

Probably choking - that is (in some sports) getting the bal to the line, but then wondering whether it would be better to pass than touch down.

Thus losing the chance completely.

More of a British disease than NZ, I would have thought.
