Ireland voting against some EU Treaty thingy that would do something that not everyone (apparently) agrees to. Nothing to do with Thailand at all, except maybe (hopefully ?) fewer Euros may travel to LoS in the future ? :o

How about a small country declaring war on a superpower, winning, and getting every other power on earth to side with them.

The Mouse That Roared.

*Roar*

Nothing to do with Thailand at all,

Crickey not that old chestnut again, this is Boredlam and 99% of the posts have nothing to do with Thailand, nor the OP for that matter :o

True enough, but I don't think we want Bedlam to start turning into a political discussion forum (again) either. There was a time when you would look at the forum topics, and 15 out of 20 (or more) would be political (mostly about US politics). Those threads were all in Bedlam because if they had been anywhere else on the forum, they would have been closed. End result was Bedlam getting taken over by politics (most of which of course had nothing to do with Thailand, or were of little concern to most of the "residents" of Bedlam).

If I recall correctly, that was about the time the very first TLW thread was started (by chanchao). There were so many politically related threads, with various people all trying to get the last word in each of them, that chanchao started a topic about it.

In fact, I was the first person to reply to the OP, and here is what I posted:

Well, before this gets hijacked and turned into a political thread, I would like to say.....

IT'S ME !

That topic turned into a monster, and is now in it's 4th incarnation as everyone knows.

I've just been browsing some of the topics from "back in the day", and wow, there were a lot of politics (late 2005/early 2006). Boon Mee, Butterfly, Spee, Ulysses G and others sparring away non-stop.

I uncovered reference to another sad memory from those days. The Tits thread. :D Yep. Tits ! :D

Although they (generally) come in twos, in this case they had one thread dedicated all to themselves.

Unfortunately, some people couldn't contain themselves (sort of like the political threads), and kept posting pics that were pushing threshold (showing way "too" much), trying to sneak "X" rated stuff into an "R" rated thread, and the whole thing got shut down.

(Not just shut down, but disappeared completely ! Rumour has it that a certain Mod may have secretly stashed a copy in a location near where he/she sat at a hip spot for a time.) :o

Well, I remember the latter days of this mayhem and was there at the rule change and because people cannot moderate themselves or each other it would appear, more stringent rules were incorporated.

And that has contributed to the Forum how, remind me?

I am not sure why this was included in your response to me, I have never posted anything obscene of the female nature that I am aware of!! Unless of course you are suggesting I am possibly pushing the boundaries?

What should we talk about?

Bebop actually asked this question and I responded, I was following forum rules and not posting anything political, but was hopefully felicitating a response in regard to several aspects of why the NO vote came about, in itself political I agree, but the actual reasons in my view are not and are worthy of debate.

These are:

Abortion: Not to be discussed further here, I also agree.

An Integrated Army: This violates the Irish general policy of being Neutral.

Conscription: Conscription into an Army, from a country that has shown over time that it values its state of Neutrality.

There are others.

These are not political issues, but moral and reasons of belief, which makes them worthy of debate and in my view what Bebop was requesting, although more on the humourous side, possibly.

There are other threads presently ongoing that could be interpreted as Political, but these have been left alone and do we really want Bedlam to become another 'Pub situation', of mindless babble outside of its stated remit?

I personally would like Bedlam to be a place of Fun, Discussion, Debate and a frank exchange of views, within the stated rules and not just some play room corner, where we could possibly learn, if not agree with each other.

I second this post Moss. I, being a yank, for one would like to know more about the politics of the world for we keeping getting surprised about what happens around us.

I wasn't insinuating that Mossfinn was pushing any boundaries, just that when these kinds of threads (political, sexual and/or religious in nature) get started, people often do start pushing the boundaries. I mentioned the Tits thread as an example, and referred back to those threads that had pretty much taken over Bedlam in 05/06.

I think another board was actually created back then where people that wanted to engaged in political debates could do so.

I for one, would not like to open Bedlam and see (again) nothing but political topics crowding out everything else. If a certain topic could be kept to a thread it might be a different story, but chances are, once one starts, more will follow.

After all, why limit it to just a thread about the Irish reaction to the EU vote ? Why not throw some Hillary/Obama/McCain threads in as well ? I'm sure the folks from Down Under would have some politics they could start threads about too (ones that don't have to do with sheep).

But hey, that's just my personal opinion. Let 'er rip and see what happens !

Ireland certainly was a different place before the billions of EU slush arrived. Seems they wanted their cake and got it, wanted and did eat it, but now don't like the bill and the small print in the contract.

I completely understand what you are saying. I remember well the days of Boonie, Thomas Merton and buttlerfly and how Bedlam sucked because of it. So, here is hoping that all here can talk about such heady topics and not foam at the mouth. :o

Ireland certainly was a different place before the billions of EU slush arrived. Seems they wanted their cake and got it, wanted and did eat it, but now don't like the bill and the small print in the contract.

There is no question that the EU has pumped funds into Ireland, but has it bitten the hand that fed it, I doubt it. These subsidies may have helped in funding the Irish infrastructure investment, but the Celtic Tiger had nothing to do with that.

The Tax structure, under threat from the Lisbon Agreement, attracted inward investment, mainly from America, add to this a well educated workforce and Ireland did the rest for themselves.

I agree Bops, unfortunately it has been shown that we cannot moderate each other on here, much to the chagrin of some of us. However, the world turns, people change, others move on, perhaps, just perhaps there could be a change in the air.

OK. I just couldn't understand what point you were trying to make in certain regards, you mentioned it was not Thailand related, that has nothing to do with this Forum. My post had nothing to do with any sexual references and nothing in regard to religion, it might possibly have something to do with politics, but I explained that away with choice, reason and belief.

I for one, would not like to open Bedlam and see (again) nothing but political topics crowding out everything else.

Yes I agree with that.

If a certain topic could be kept to a thread it might be a different story, but chances are, once one starts, more will follow.

Times change, but you may be right, however I fail to see the logic, my post was in response to Bop asking for a meaningful thread, I don't think it was political or religious and certainly not sexual.

After all, why limit it to just a thread about the Irish reaction to the EU vote ? Why not throw some Hillary/Obama/McCain threads in as well ?

I again fail to understand the direction of this comment, it was a referendum, a peoples choice not a political one, in fact the politicos wanted a yes vote, my point was about choice and reason.

Hillary/Obama/McCain? Well, I have no wish to discuss US Politics :o

But hey, that's just my personal opinion.

Good, we all have one.

Let 'er rip and see what happens !

I personally believe that there is a different group now, so why not? but that is a different thread for another time.

Thanks for your contribution.
