Civil servants sent to aid the poor live it up in 5-star hotel

Civil servants sent to Afghanistan to fight poverty in the war-torn country are to spend a week in one of Asia’s finest hotels at British taxpayers’ expense.

The 44 diplomats – all employed by the Department for International Development – will be flown from Kabul to India where they will experience the delights of the luxury Oberoi Hotel in Delhi.

The conditions they will be staying in during the trip, which will cost tens of thousands of pounds, are in stark contrast to the deprivations suffered by the Afghans they are charged with helping.

While a bottle of water at the hotel costs £1.30, more than half the Afghan population is estimated to live on less than half of this a day.

The trip will also anger front-line troops who earn a fraction of the salaries of civil servants and receive pitiful amounts of compensation for battlefield injuries.

Single rooms at the Oberoi cost up to £300 a night and feature a personal butler, plasma TV and DVD player. The lavish hotel spa is decorated in Turkish marble and oak. Among the treatments are a £70 hot stone massage and soothing aromatherapy and beauty programmes.

The aim of next month’s trip is to improve teamwork and review strategy in Afghanistan, where the DfID has spent more than £490 million since 2001.

I have a friend who had to stay in a government hotel in Paris for a while. He couldn't believe how well fitted out it was, he had a key to his cell door, a fridge and cable TV.

When I first joined the Royal Navy, i was based at Chatham. Due to cut backs, we closed it and moved to Portsmouth and Plymouth.

The Prison board came, to look at our barracks with a view to housing prisoners. Following the inspection, their conclusion was that it would be too expensive to bring it up to habitable standards for prisoners.

Moral:-

fight and serve for your country, get treated like sh1t.

kill, rape, mug, steal and get treated like humans.

According to this email forward, attached photographs of an attractive modern building show a new prison located in the United Kingdom (UK). The email includes shots of the building's exterior as well as photographs showing the high quality accommodation and sporting facilities inside.

Although the building might look like a contemporary office block or accommodation facility, it really is a new prison. However, the prison is located in Austria, not the UK as claimed in the message.

The photographs show the Justice and Detention Centre in Leoben, Austria. The building was completed in 2005 and comprises court facilities as well as a penitentiary. Modern architecture website MIMOA notes:

Architect Josef Hohensinn did not find it all that far-fetched to take home comfort into consideration in his penitentiary design for the new Justice and Detention Centre in Leoben. Façades, layout of spaces, art concept - everything meets the highest Austrian standards.

"Lucky" Austrian prisoners enjoy not only clean and modern accommodation but can also move freely among their cells and the communal spaces in their designated areas. There are also outdoor courtyards where inmates can walk and sit in the fresh air.
