A Question

Featured Replies

Three men arrive late at night to a motel in the desert.

They are told the price of a room which can accommodate them all, is thirty bucks. They each pay 10 dollars and settle down for the night.

The manager, an honest chap, remembers there is a special promotion on that say and the room should have only cost 25$. He gives the Bell Boy 5$ to give back to the men. The lad, not so honest, can't be botherd to work out how to split the change, so he knocks on the door gives each man a 1$ refund and slips the 2$ left, into his pocket.

Giving back the dollar meant each man had paid 9$.

3 times 9 is 27. add the two in the lads pocket, gives you 29.

The question is what happened to the missing dollar ? :o

I..am..stupid... i ..cant..work..it..out....

"Giving back the dollar meant each man had paid 9$." - This statement is not true.

Each person actually only paid $8:33 initially.

Nope....Each man paid 10$ each to make up the thirty. Then the BB gave them each back a dollar.

In effect they are only paying £9 each,

= £27 for a room that only costs £25

£2 goes into the pocket

Which then equates to the £25.

<deleted> me, I've just realised how drunk I am.

Night night all and <deleted> someone solve this before I wake up

PS, 2+2 =......... :o

lever Budgie Ken! :D

You can hire it for typing & spelling if you like............ :o

It's a trick question, kind of a "logical illusion".

The men each pay $10 (total = $30)

They each get a dollar back, meaning they paid $9 each ($27 total)

Inn Keeper got $25, bell hop kept $2 ($27 total), and the men had $1 each ($30 total).

The trick is in thinking the $2 the bell hop kept is in addition to the $27 the men paid for the room, when in fact it should be subtracted from the 27.

smartass :o

:D If I had a feeling, it might be hurt !

Besides, it wasn't rocket science, it was Google ! Once I realised what the trick (or illusion) was, it all became as clear as the water in Pattaya Bay ! (I did spend quite a bit of time with paper and pencil, and a stack of coins, trying to puzzle it out before Googling it)

The hard part was trying to explain it in a way that made sense.

Someone else (somewhere else) explained it slightly differently.

The 3 men each paid $9 ($27 total), plus they each were given back a dollar ($3 total). $27 they paid and $3 in their pocket equals $30. So where did the $2 the bell-hop kept come from ? It was part of the $27 the men paid of course. $25 to the inn-keeper and $2 to the bell-hop.

OK, so that one's out of the way, what's next ? Something a bit easier perhaps (i.e. Is the speed of light a constant, or a variable ?)

good one

Well, it made sense to me on my lonely little planet, however I do except KD's explanation was a little more lucid.

Which way does the water swirl around a bowl either side of the equator?

Straight down is not allowed as an answer. :o

Moss

Another urban myth ... the direction of swirl is governed by a few factors, but one of them isn't which hemisphere the bowl is located in.

Solely depends on the aerodynamics of the jobbies in the bowl. ( some would add consistency )

My daughter got this in seconds. Her answer a tad less technical than the superb Google number was more simple.

She just answered the question. She said there is no money missing. 25 with the manager, three back to the lads and two in the pocket, grand total thirty, non missing. :D

Thats one smart cookie you got there.

I don't know about that. I saw a science program as a kid where they did it one side, then walked across the equator and did it again, with the same bowl etc, and it definitely went the other way.

No seriously, it's an urban myth. I have 6 wash basins in my house and the experiment is easy to conduct - 3 go clockwise and 3 counter-clockwise!

Then the equator must run right through the middle of it.
