Texting Is A Social Disease

Featured Replies

OK. Hands up anyone that has written a letter long hand (pen and paper not PC) in the past year? ...last five years?

I send a hand written letter to my father in Oz ever week. I used to type it on the computer and print it but he complained it wasn't "personal" so I went back to hand writing them. I have to admit that it was more difficult because on the computer I can compose the letter and then edit it but by hand that is much more complicated.

I guess texting has its place, I have a friend who is often in Hospital, she can't use the phone to talk, but can text, I obviously can't phone her and am unable to text, how to get over this difficulty?

We used PM to find a convenient time to ring. :o

Cheers TV

Good Luck

It has it's advantages...

I find it forces me to focus when I do a hand written letter. I have to prepare, in my head at least, the sequence of the letter and then write it. On the computer I bang out the message and then edit it until it looks ok and puts across the points I am trying to make.

The other thing I find when I write long hand is that I am much more formal in grammar and spelling. My dad used to send back my letters after he had "red lined" them with the errors highlighted. (sigh)

I'd have just said "Dad, are you saying that you admit to having failed me as a parent? As you obviously haven't given me as good as education, as your parents gave to you" :o

And he'd say "No son, this is just dumbing down!" :o

This weekend I have had to find a use for texting as explained above, but what a chore, how on earth do you punctuate? having to use an i instead of an I, really annoyed me, I had to use 'myself' inappropriately because 'me' kept coming up as 'of'. And 'Bedlam', just wasn't recognised!!

In desperation I even had to use a secretary to send the first message :D

I don't think it is a social disease, but crikey, in the majority of times, why don't you just pick up the phone?

Moss :o

Hey Moss, I don't want to come across as a 'know all', however, if 'me' comes up as 'of' just press the * key and it gives you other options. If a word doesn't get recognised usually the top left key has 'options' where you can spell and add the word you want. Or get a young person to do it for you! :o

Now, that would be a day :D

I will let her know, she will be chuffed to be regarded as a young person :o

I haven't hand written a letter for years, my handwriting is appalling and always has been. Many's the long hour I spent kept in after class rewriting tedious line after line.

But, I've found that when I do hand write something my spelling and grammar is far better than when I type.

If I type a page on my blog here on ThaiVisa and go back and read it virtually every "there" and "their" has to be corrected.

And that's just one example. :o

Moss, what's your phone? On most Nokia's if you press the "1" key it comes up with a full stop, if you then press the "*" key it changes to "," then a "-" then a "?" and so on.

Also, if you are having difficulty with predictive text, just turn it off. ? I prefer predictive and just press the "*" key for alternative words but many other people prefer standard texting. Each to their own :o

I had huge issues with predictive text - until I trained it by added words to it's dictionary, funny that the brains at Nokia don't put in all the swear words that are required on a near daily basis. Like Google offers 'Safe Search' options, phones should have amoung language mode settings the options, 'Proper Sentances And Punctuation', 'Street Speak - init' & 'Extra Profane'.

Hi Jangles, it is a Nokia and what you said works, but then you knew that. :D

I just hope I don't have to use it to often.

Good luck

:o !

I always have predictive text turned off. I can text pretty fast, and much better without it. Does my head in the amount of time it takes to sort out the words in predictive mode. But, I did use predictive texting when i first got a mobile phone after kicking and screaming that "I'll never own one of those poncy things"(That was about 10 year ago, funny how things change), but i never had to add in swear words, haha! I guessing my text vocabulary isnt quite as colourful as yours Cuban. :D

I knew you'd be a Nokia man, Moss. All the smart dudes use Nokia and numpty's use Samung and Ericson :D

Right, i'm ducking for cover :o

...and those who understand "value for money" go for Motorola :D

I HATE texting and use it only as a last measure when in a noisy environment (f.e directing the rest of the Friday crowd that is still finishing the drinks in the other bar to the next waypoint). Other than that....never ever!!

The cake takes SMS spam, though. I offered one spammer (the Chrystal Lounge in Suk Soi 20 - name and shame them!!) physical harm to staff, management and inventory if they do not stop it. I tried it three times politely before that without avail, the fourth time I told the Manager that I will "punch his face out" and that one finally did the trick.

Well, I don't pay a penny for mine, if I did I would have Motorola, Honest.

I will "punch his face out"

Have I ever upset you Raro, if I have, you have my most humblest apologies? :D

Good luck

Moss :D

I sincerely hope it wasn't you...or are you running that Chrystal Lounge by any chance?

Why not just add their number to you blocked list? Works for calls and sms.
