Never tried it by bus, but they're plentiful and frequent at the regular places you'll transit through to connect onwards, towns like Phitsanulok and Khon Kaen before you reach Nakhon Phanom. Being less intrepid, I'd be looking at a flight to Bangkok with a reasonable connection to Udon Thani (there's six or so flights a day from Don Mueang it appears)... and then get a bus on from there. Up to you :-D

I doubt there are direct busses, but you could get a bus to Udon Thani, from there you can cath the bus to Nakhom Phanom, they go frequently via Sakhon Nakhon.

Another (quicker) option, is to fly into Bangkok with Air Asia, and then at Suvarnabhumi take PB air, they fly direct to Nakhon Phanom.

THX, The bustrip via Udon Thani is probably the quickest, the flights not considered.

Count on the bus taking between five and five and a half hours, at least it did the last I used it about eighteen months ago. used to use it a lot before I bought my wheels.

Yep, Udon Thani - Nakhon Phanom will take 5 to 5,5 hours, I did this trip a couple of times, (last time, about three weeks ago). They do stop everywhere :o

there are overnight VIP-buses from Arcade/ChMai to either Khon Khaen or Ubon Ratchatani-dont know the eaxct routing of the latter-ask-it may stop off closer by, maybe even Mukdaharn. KhKhaen has 2 separate busstations-the faster AC-1st cl buses take less and only do the important stops-but they also run less frequently.

Is it possible to drive a car from Chaing Mai to Nakhon Phanom? What is the road like and how long will it take? What is the best route?

It's possible but a very long haul. Best way (I've tried a few) is Route 11 from CM to Phitsanulok, 12 east to Khon Kaen, 2 north to Udon, 22 east to Nakhon Phanom. All 2-lane except for Route 2, and fairly interminable tho quite beautiful in bits. Unless you actually have to move a vehicle between the two cities, or have a lot of time, I'd try to make other arrangements.

Although not in one trip, I've traveled almost all of this route at one time or another. I found the roads to be fine.

Thanks. I am living in Chiang Mai and finding plenty to do in the area. My Thai is fairly limited. I want to make at least one trip to Issan, possibly with an eight year old child. I want to experience something very different for a few days. We could easily fly or take the bus, but I was looking at other options including driving, or flying to Laos and coming back from there.
