December 9, 200817 yr Camels in Australia? Plan to kill 400,000 Outback camels A NATIONAL cull of 400,000 feral camels is being considered in light of a new report to federal and state governments. The report by researchers at the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre will be launched in Canberra tomorrow. It states that Australia has the largest wild camel herd on Earth, with more than a million camels ranging over a vast area of 3.3 million square kilometres. Lead author Glenn Edwards from the Northern Territory says the camel population is doubling every nine years. Link
December 9, 200817 yr Don't kill them, just let some more Somalians immigrate, and you will reap the benefits of these humped amblers instead.
December 9, 200817 yr They were brought into Australia by the Afghans initially, and both played a large part in opening up the outback. The current muslim immigrants are more interested in the opening of CentreLink.
December 9, 200817 yr Author I believe there's a niche market selling good specimens to the Saudis who are having problems with inbreeding. (The Saudi camels, not the Saudis). Oh all right, <deleted> it, both of them.
December 9, 200817 yr "The report by researchers at the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre will be launched in Canberra tomorrow." I wonder what they have to say about all the other problem ferals they have, ie. :- Goats Water Buffalo Cats Dogs Rabbits Cane Toads Foxes Sparrows & Starlings and a whole heap of other introduced critters that have upset the balance of Australia's unique flora & fauna.
December 10, 200817 yr Author There are far more kangaroos now than there were when the first colonists arrived. The clearing of scrub land and forests for farming turned the whole country into one huge open air restaurant especially designed for kangaroos.
December 10, 200817 yr An Aussie youth goes to join the cops..... " Right mate take a seat. We have just one task for you...........Take this gun and shoot ten Abbo's, ten illegal Grunts, ten Lebo's and a rabbit." "Why the rabbit ?" " Brillient answer mate........You're just the guy we're looking for......"
December 10, 200817 yr I remember seeing a receipe for roast camel once, first you stuffed chickens with rice and stuff, then stuffed goats with the chickens, then goats into the camel. Cooking time was eight days or so? There are a few that pop up in a Google search.
December 10, 200817 yr I wonder if there's a being higher up the food chain than homo sapiens? If there is they may well be looking down at us saying "I think it about time we culled a few million of those little critters. They are starting to get to be a nuisance and threatening other species on the planet. Whoever imported that first pair from the fourth rock from the local star sure screwed up the ecology of the place."
