You only need a re-entry permit if you are on a 1 year extension or if on a non-oa visa that has aready expired and you are on your last 1 year entry.

I have a one year retirement visa that’s ‘linked’ to a multi-entry stamp.

I returned to the UK in June of this year for a period of three months and due to my retirement visa having a multi entry stamp I did not have the need to obtain a re-entry permit.

A re-entry permit is for those who choose not to pay for the multi-entry stamp which costs 3,800 baht as they probably don’t intend traveling outside of the kingdom or if they do travel it might just be the once therefore paying for a ‘one time’ re-entry permit makes sence which I think is around 1,200 baht per permit.

Had I only obtained a retirement visa and not bothered with the multi-entry stamp which I applied for separately at Pattaya immigration I would have had to obtain a re-entry permit when I returned from the UK in August this year.

If like me you have to do 90 day reporting on your retirement visa then when you do return to Thailand you have to calculate the 90 days yourself, counting your arrival day as day one.

Hope this helps.

I have a multiple entry one year retirement visa. Do I still need to get a re-entry permit when leaving the country?

The key is:-

Did you get this visa from a consulate overseas? In this case no re-entry permit is required PROVIDED you return before the 'enter before' date on your visa.

If you have received a retirement extension from immigration then you need a re-entry permit if you intend leaving the country.

Before the utilise before date.

That is why it always is best to get any visa just before you plan on leaving.

Last possible entry with the multiple-entry visa is on the day before the date stamped on the visa. In the above example it would be 30 DEC 2008.

:o URGENT New Question on Multiple Entry visa

Please help me understand. I have a multiple entry visa (26 years of age and from South Africa) and I am due for the normal 90 day extention on the 14th of January. I will be going out of Thailand for "new years", and will return on the 4th. A friend told me that I will not get the full 90 days on my return on the 4th because there are still too many days to go till the actual expiry date. Is this true? where can I confirm this. Can anybody help??

You will get 90 days when you return.

Your friend is wrong. You could be in the country 2 days leave and when you returned you would still get 90 days.

I'm going to disagree with this.

I have a one year visa and a work permit, I have to get a re-entry permit every time I leave the country or my visa gets invalidated which then invalidates my work permit.

You are not on a one year visa you are on one year extension of stay.

A visa only allows you to enter the country for a period of time after entering the country you are on a permit to stay not a visa.

Thanks Ubonjoe.

May I ask another question please.

I am sorry to have worded the previous note incorrectly.

This extention is the final one. The actual visa expires on the 14th, and this would have been my final trip out of the country to push the visa into 15 months. Do you know if there has been a change in law in this case? Something that determines that you must leave the country 14 days before the actual expiry in order to get the 3 month extention? More than one person that I know of seemed to have this problem and I cannot pick up anything on the internet. (don't know if they did a overland trip though).

If you wanted to you could leave and re-enter on the 13th and still get the 90 days.

Perhaps somebody is confusing getting an extension at immigration with getting a new entry using a visa. They at times want a minimum amount of time left on a permit to stay to get an extension.

What you are calling an extension is really a re-entry to get another 90 day permit to stay.

Don't worry you don't have a problem.
