£10bn Zimbabwe Note

Yes, worth about US$25 yesterday. (An important point with Zimbabwean currency).

The text says a mere ten billion, but the American English clearly says 100 billion. Would that resolve the global economic crisis?

I say American English because as the foto shows, that is 100,000.000.000. British, European or Hispanic language may compute differently.

I'm waiting for the even newer Trillion Dollar Note !

I plan on converting my secret stash of 25 and 50 satang coins into Zimbooboo dollars and be the world's richest man (for a few minutes at least, until they introduce a 10 trillion dollar note shortly afterwards).

Then I'll be back on level of ordinary people like Thaksin and various members of the Nigerian Military and government, all of whom seem to have mere millions stuck in various bank accounts, and need my help to free up the money.

My help won't be free though. I intend on charging them 15-20% of the total value for my assistance. To prove my sincerity and honesty, I may even send them some "advance" money to help with various fees and bribes. I'll be able to afford it though. I'll just cash in one of my Trillion dollar notes for a few 100 billion dollar bills. That ought to be enough.

I just knew if I kept all those 25 and 50 satang coins long enough, it'd pay off someday ! :o

I often wondered why you got Satangs in change at BigC, but at the gas pump you didn't, even though the price is always shown as decimals of a Baht ..... it's a conspiracy, those oil barons have been saving all the Satangs and investing in Z Dollars... next few days they may have saved enough to buy back a couple of litres.

After his latest outburst about owning Zimbabwe, even the Americans now think Mugabe has completely lost his mind. They are saying the coalition govt isn't working and won't work as long as he is there. (something I think the rest of us knew some time ago)

There are calls for South Africa to turn off electricity supplies to Zimbabwe to force him out. Not sure how that would work myself, it would only increase the hardship for the masses.

I don't know how the country can be resurected when the madman is eventually removed. It seems too far gone.

Bu66er, I've had these under the mattress for the last week thinking I am on to a fortune.

A few years ago I had the experience of being a millionaire. But then I bought a cup of coffee and was back down to mere pauper status. :o

Travelling through Istanbul, I had to rent a luggage cart. Gave the attendant $1.00 US, and got back over a million lire (lira ?) in change ! Should have taken a picture of it, but as I said, shortly after that I bought a cup of coffee (750,000 lire) and fell back to earth.

Ahh, those short lived dreams of a life of luxury, me and my million lire.

But now you can be a 100 Billionaire and hobnob with the other elite at Lek's bar and cockroach hotel (at least until the bin come) ! :D

I don't think it would work either OC. The man would probably get all his followers to round up the country's supply of candles. He'd sell some at a Trillion Dollars each and keep the rest. As long as he isn't feeling any hardship, he doesn't give a toss about his people.

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. He will either be dead or in front of the Hague.

Personally I'd prefer the former, preferably from unnatural causes, with the donation of the funds that would have been spent on the latter to the rebuilding of what was once the breadbasket of Africa.

But tat would be against his human rights wouldn't it. :o

And despite his apparent lack of concern over the rights of others, he would probably be the first, and loudest, to scream if his "rights" were impinged in any way. :o

Well they've just introduced a 50 Billion dollar note, which will apparently be enough to buy TWO loaves of bread !

When they introduced the 10 Billion note not too long ago, it would by 20 loaves of bread.

Inflation is around 231 MILLION percent annually (over 100% per day). The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had slashed several zeros off the inflation rate, but it bounced back higher and quicker than before.

A link to the story (gees, sure hope it's been over 30 seconds since it was put online): Zimbabwe introduces $50 billion note

Want to be that Mugabe has a (very) sizeable fortune stashed away for his eventual retirement (in England or France) ?

The guys never going to retire, and he's over 80 now.

So what happens to all that cash when he does drop off the perch? The gnomes of Zurich must be laughing all the way to (their) bank.

I'm sure it will spur a flurry of new letters and emails from various "government officials", "military officers" and senior "bank officials" all offering a substantial portion of the ill gotten gains if you are willing to help them. All it will require is your banking details and a "little bit up front" to take care of some official paperwork and transfer fees, then you'll receive a huge cut of the booty !! :o

My Mother is still in Zimbabwe, trying to get her out is a major feat. We hope she will be out in two-three weeks. hel_l trying to get money into the country and hel_l that they are living in over there right now

On a serious note, what is the solution?  Say Mugabe was arrested, killed, died, or whatever tomorrow.  How would anyone reign in that kind of, well "hyper inflation" doesn't even work as an adequate term here.

Get rid of the currency and put in a foreign one (e.g. Euros, dollars) until the situation stabilizes? Some other course of action?

Not sure where they should go from here, but maybe this is the start:

Zimbabwe abandons its currency

Zimbabweans will be allowed to conduct business in other currencies, alongside the Zimbabwe dollar,

in an effort to stem the country's runaway inflation.

The announcement was made by acting Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa.

BBC southern Africa correspondent Peter Biles says the Zimbabwean dollar has become

a laughing stock. A Z$100 trillion note was recently introduced.

Until now only licensed businesses could accept foreign currencies, although it was common practice.

So you lot are only concerned with economics right... ?

Hi Seugha! I never understand all the economic stuff :o Numbers are not one of my strong points. My brother's trying to send money into Zimb this week but god knows what happens to it once it arrives there. Anyone know?

I don't think all of us understand the economic stuff - I can't even balance my bank account! :o

Well the 100 TRILLION Dollar note didn't last long !

They've loppped another 12 zeros off their currency, for a total of 22 zeros within the last year (so far) !

HARARE, Zimbabwe (CNN) --

Zimbabwe slashed 12 zeros from its currency as hyperinflation continued to erode its value, the country's central bank announced Monday.

"Even in the face of current economic and political challenges confronting the economy, the Zimbabwe dollar ought to and must remain the nation's currency, so as to safeguard our national identity and sovereignty. ... Our national currency is a fundamental economic pillar of our sovereignty," said Gideon Gono, governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

"Accordingly, therefore, this monetary policy statement unveils yet another necessary program of revaluing our local currency, through the removal of 12 zeros with immediate effect."

The move means that 1 trillion in Zimbabwe dollars now will be equivalent to one Zimbabwe dollar.

The old notes -- with the highest being 100 trillion dollars -- not enough to buy a loaf of bread -- will remain valid until June 30, after which they will cease to be legal tender. One U.S. dollar is trading above 300 trillion Zimbabwe dollars.

This third attempt to lop off zeros comes barely six months after the Zimbabwe government last adjusted its currency as it continues to lose value.

World-record inflation estimated to be in the billions of percent -- but officially at 231 million percent as of July last year -- has quickly eroded the currency's value again and again. The highest note on the new set is 500 Zimbabwe dollars.

One of our guys just came back from Zimbabwe. I was joking with him if he'd brought us back some shiny new 50 Billion Dollar bills. I guess they weren't worth buying at the time, or he didn't have enough room in his luggage to bring all the bills back ($1 US would equal about 6,000 Fifty Billion Dollar bills !!) :o
