Cro,

Hold the horses brother....now ur rolling out some serious bike PORN! The dicko meter is working full time :P .

YOU are a PURE HORSEPOWER JUNKIE :D

Yes, your point is taken regarding exhausts and its possible for you to achieve this power increases with a fully street legal system AND Ducati don't mess around with their race systems.

Its highly probably that the figures will match a Ducati 1198R with 200HP @ 164KG....Slipper clutch, oddles of carbon fibre & its a steal at only AUD$59,990 plus onroad costs ($63,000). The Thailand version is going to cause alot more financial pain.

Reality check - 18hp suzuki raider :wai::o:D:D:D actually my bottom lips quivering at the moment

Did chum actually happen to mention if hes ridden either of the bikes. I'm not being critical of him BUT it sounds like a very salesman type pitch.

I have just been reading an article written by Kevin Ash, who has tested both the 1098R and the 1198S & whilst the 1098R is some 12hp more powerful & 4kg lighter than the 1198S, after all the refinement given to the new bike & the extra cost of the R, I think he leans towards the 1198S.

It will be interesting to see what the 1198R offers, won't it?

:o Chum is about the lowest pressure salesman i ever met, but yeah, i get the feeling he is a bit worried about being stuck with a 2.4 million baht bike. It will probably go to someone who missed out on a Desmocedici. He's honest though- he said he doesn't know much about the engines...have to talk to J the mechanic about that and he wasn't there today. Didnt ask if he's ridden the 1098R - he did say he is getting one more 'cedici delivered that he'll get to ride before it goes out - I believe that will be at BIRA. I'll definetly post the date when it happens.

Just got back from Thong Lor- there were a few Thai guys looking at the 1098R- I've met these guys before and they could plunk down the cash if they wanted :o (terry - our pals from bang saen bike week)

The 1198 is supposed to arrive in June or July - one 1198 and one S. price will be 1.198M for the "tamada" and another 400,000 for the S. Chum- the manager, told me yes, the S is a special bike, but it's not an R - the 1098R is loaded with titanium, carbon fiber, and that exhaust system, hence the higher HP and lower weight. But for 900,000 thou less, I'd go for the 1198S, spend the savings on a Paul Smart. But unless I got a very rich old and sick uncle somewhere I don't know about, none of that is gonna happen. Anyway if I had to be totally honest, both the 1098R and 1198S would put me right on my a**. But dam_n nice bikes to look at.

That would be just around 48,000 more than an 1098S which I think is priced at 1.55m right now I expected it to be much higher, still there is a market for them not a huge one, but last time i was in the shop Chum told me that after the Desmodeci launch they had sold 3 @ 3.5 mil good for a trip down to the Talat Nut for some Kway Teaow. Looking forward to the Bsaen Bike week hope to meet up with few of you guys there.

Cheers

HH

Hi Guys!

Oh, and he's still trying to get his knee down! :D:D:o

At least with this new ride hes got room for a couple of extra Yamaha girls :D

Cro, Talking about power increases with various pipes, I was watching a dyno test of a 1098S online & they tested the 1098 with standard exhausts & then put on the Ducati Termignoni pipes & re-did the test. THE POWER difference was a staggering 16.2 HP at the rear wheel. So, the claim about the new 1198R with the Termignoni pipes fitted falls directly in line with 200HP, if not a little more....which is massive from a 164kg bike, if that ends up being the figure. :o

I assume that's a full Termi system, not just the slip-ons.

I've just had Termis installed on the 848.

Hey Tony,

Just got my new GPS after I sold my old beloved one to Trent, got the same Garmin GPSMap 60Cx for 227.5 $ plus the RAM mount for 35 $ pretty good deal. So now we are out of excuses for getting lost I guess. :o Can't wait for the trip when I get back home. Yamaha installed the V46 top box and E41 side cases so I'm good for over 120 liters of luggage, probably have to take a load of Trent's shampoo and cream and shit I guess as he never get enough space. :D

Cheers Bard

RUNNING IN NEW BIKES:

Many of you are just getting new bikes & are wondering about running in proceedures. Theres lots of advice out there, but I feel that Kevin Ash who not only is extreemly experience offers a good explantion regarding modern engines and their running in as well as some fantastic advice. Alot of you may be surprised by what he says. Take a look at this link:

Yupp Neverdie it pretty much confirms what MotoMan has been preaching for years now. Use NON synthetic oil and rev hard, break with the engine and vary the rpm as much as possible.

I do this;

Immediately change the oil to NON synthetic oil and new filter (before I even start the engine)

Run the engine hard rev, break with engine for 35 km

Change oil and filter again (Non Synthetic)

Run with varied RPM until service (1000 km)

Change oil and filter again (Non synthetic)

Ride as I like until next service

Change to manufacturer oil and new filter again

The 35 km is just to flush the engine for loose debris, and you will be surprised how much crap there is in the filter when you do so. If you don't do the 35 km these particles get dissolved (or eroded to tiny parts) which makes a layer on the engine, does not really harm the engine much but it creates poorer oil flow and lubing.

Very simple and it makes the engine last longer, plus you get much more powerful engine as you don't get all the loss from running in as most people do.

Just as an example for the FZ6 S2

One guy ran in as per factory book, low rpm and synthetic oil. The other used MotoMan or pretty much same as you linked to.

On a dyno the one ran in with synthetic had 89 hp on the rear wheel

The other had 94 hp on the rear wheel, they opened the engine on the low power one and it had leak from the piston rings to the crankshaft. So yes, it confirms this over and over that Motoman and ashonbikes are right, and it leads to longetivity on the engine.

Calling Crobiker, Rustic Charm & any of the others interested in reading a good write up on the new Ducati 1198S......also click on the link above and goto Kevin Ash's site, click on bike tests and have a read, very informative....looks like Ducati may have pulled something very special out of their hat, this time.

Interestingly dave, I have done a similar type of thing for years, forgetting the oil side, which I completely agree with you on, it is important to ride the bike without being too soft or too hard.

The thing that interest me the most about what that article had to say, was the bit where they suggest non synthetic oil for up to the first 5,000.

It would be interesting to look at various engine parts under a microscope at new, then again after correct run in.

Something special about having the same bike as your mate, but yours just seems to be just that little bit extra special....sux when its the other way around tho!

Anyway, time for me to SHUT up.....I dont even have a new bike :o

Yeah, the 1198! http://www.ashonbikes.com/ducati1198s

To be honest, I've been avoiding reading media on this bike as I might be tempted toward another trade-in. This time, one I can't afford. But I'm more than happy with the 848. Especially as now I have the Termis. Not sure what the increase in hp is but it feels and sounds a lot smoother above 150kph. The Puig double-bubble windscreen helps with wind resistance as I'm not the smallest of blokes.

Had a 'moment' today returning from Hua Hin on the Southern elevated ring road from Bang Bon to Suksawat. A pick-up about 200m in front of me lost part of its load. Dozens of clear plastic bin liner-sized bags were strewn across the highway, carpeting the road, flying through the air, getting caught under cars etc as the pick-up in question continued on it's merry way, oblivious to everything.

Boy, I do love emergency braking and dodging plastic bags on the motorway! Okay, I wasn't really supposed to be on there in the first place but...  :o

Funny that. The other day something very similar happened to me, tho it was a farkin carpet roll that came off the truck.....I was just positioning myself to overtake & somehow just managed to miss it by just inches, right after its first bounce....I'm afraid it would of been CURTAINS for both of us if that hit.

A friend and collegue of mine died that way, except it wasnt a carpet.

I drew alongside the truck and gave him a lipful :D The BIB should really be checking alot more loads its so dangerous.

W00t! Tomorrow I'm goin under the knife for carpal tunnel release surgery! But on the other hand that means I'll be off the bike for a fortnight or so :o But at least that means I'll get less numbness on long trips, so it'll be worth it. Wish me luck in getting rid of 100% of the problem!
