Int'l Driver's License Ad

It's probably a United Nations International driving license. I got mine the same way. I am pretty sure it won't be recognized by an insurance company, but in the five years I've had mine (ever since the police started checking), I've had a 100% success rate with it. It has saved me thousands in fines. Cops love it. They do a thumbs up when they see it. It also expired a year ago, but they never look that close.

Anyway, have now got a non-immigrant visa for the express purpose of getting a real Thai driving license.

There's a disclaimer on it saying that it has to be used in conjunction with a regular national driving licence and thus is not valid on its own. Nevertheless its perfect for road blocks.

I agree with the others in as much as getting a Thai DL is no great hardship and you are 100% legal.

I also have one of these United Nations drivers licences, but I paid 1500 baht for it, in Bangkok. I have had 2 accidents in Thailand, with one resulting in a Thai breaking his arm (he was on the wrong side of the road, but being a foreigner in Thailand, I was in the wrong :o 80,000 baht later, but that is another story) - insurance company (Zurich) paid out on both accounts using my licence.

I wouldnt suggest the licences work in any other country though?????

I have been using a UN license here for seven years.

The cops like it and so does my insurance company who have a copy of it on file and have stated that it is acceptable.

However it is not really valid.

The problem I have is that the immigration police do not understand what a "proof of address" is and cannot give me one so I cannot get a Thai license. I have asked three times

Did anyone notice an ad in the Phuket Gazette Classifieds (some time ago) for Int'l driver's license for 6,000 baht?

Is that for real?

If you are English (sorry, British), the AA (Automobile Association, not Alcoholics Anonymous) does real ones for £6 (450 baht). The only problem is getting it into Thailand as the postman stole my first one. But the AA were very good and sent me another for free :o

Then you can easily (?) get a real Thai license and get real insurance.

Agreed!

The Immigration Office in Phuket Town handed the relevant form over straight away, must have a visa of at least three months, though, the one month "Transit" visa ain't no good. I must say that the squad at the PPTO are ultra-efficient .. they put my home country's civil service to shame.

Actually this is wrong. I have had two accident in Thailand, both not my fault and although I had to insist in both cases, I won and was paid for all damages.

Either you guys give up to fast or everyone likes to be stylish by talking badly about Thailand.

What do you do when back home? Say oh well cause I once lived in Thailand therefore I was automatically wrong! :o

OK did the edit and now you can flame me.

The address verification form you fill out at immigration is the same one used to to apply for a Residence Permit. Your local PD is supposed to have the facility for giving this form, too.

You can also get it as an affadavit from your Embassy...

If you're in Phrae, do you go to Chiang Mai Immigration? I got that form from them on Feb 4.....

We all realize that anything can happen in a corrupt society, including a farang getting blamed for an accident primarily because he/she is farang...

But, I've never seen even one TRUE example of that, and I've been involved directly/indirectly with perhaps 20 cases over the years. Some say otherwise, but in every case I was privy to, the farang got a fair shake- and they were at fault sometimes and had to pay up. One friend still insists the other guy hit him, but when he called me to the Station at 3am to help him, he was drooling all over himself and was unable to see well enough to even sign his name. And the other farang in his car said his friend fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a another car...

Like Mouse, I take these claims of unfair treatment of farangs with a large grain of salt at first glance. Not from predjudice, but from extensive personal experiences...

But, I still realize that anything is possible here. I've experienced that, too :o

Asked to be flamed - interesting!, sorry not this time. :o

Listen Mouse, what your experience is and what mine is, is obviously different. I live in Phuket and you live ? - see not the same either.

I dont talk bad about Thais that often, but when it comes to Phuket and how the system works here, I would class myself as very knowledgable.

Your post was just a rant that you know nothing about, unless you live here. :D

BTW, The Chalong Police Station is reportedly the richest in the country, due to bribes and fines.

Have a real nice day mini :D

Yes I live in Phrae but go to Nan for my one year extensions.

The officier says I only need passport and UK driving license to get a thai D/L.

Yes I know about the embassy letter but I do not like giving wads of money to the robbing UK government for a twenty word letter. I would rather give it to the nice immigration policeman

Firstly Thyim ... great avitar..

the proff of res thingo....I will soon be the test baby cause I'll be applying for my Thai DL soon. Had a my Patong Taxie man check on the deal for me and yes the reg at you embassy will work. Infact the web info I got here is spot on. You got the paper work and it is just a eye test. Let you DL expire and off to class, written test, and the dreaded road test. See, there is no justice.

I've seen the ones advertised in the Phuket Gazette. They are not UN licences, nor are they issued by any government. However they do look nice with your photo imprinted on the plastic, and International Driving License on them. They LOOK official, and I believe the Thai Police are happy with them. I doubt if they would work in any western country though.

Maybe if you all stopped bribing them and paying the fines things would become a little more just. I have never paid a kickback once here. had a few dealings with street cops and real cops, but never paid a single baht

Surely they don't get 6000 baht a piece for 'em o they Bob ?

The two people I know who have them certainly paid that. I think you get buy a better International License (issued by insert name of country or organisation) from any decent forger.
