Quite right. There's no point giving two points for a win if you're not going to allow them to be split.

It makes it easier for the TV scheduling as well, and its not as if you NEED to win every game; its not the Challenge Cup Final

(25 August Leeds - Warrington)

Dear Mr StreetCowboy ... you seemed to have excelled yourself last night ... thumbsup.gif

The Saturday Leeds - Wigan game was the more exciting; but I need to reduce the number of typos - mostly missed letters, because of the speed of the internet connection, I think; I need to read what I'm writing, as well as watching the screen. I suppose that's one reason why its easier to summarise form the radio...

I'll be back a fortnight earlier.

I'd like to watch the game in the Office, after the efforts Bob has made to show it in previous years, though I'll probably end up watching at home.

Or i might try and prevail on my native Indian guides to watch at the Combined Old Boys Rugby Association, though that then poses the challenge of getting the car home afterwards.

Maybe I'll watch with the Imam in Sid's...

... sitting at home with a few cans of Irn Bru is looking more and more attractive.

SC

EDIT: I suppose your chaps will be concentrating on making the play-offs, and keeping the Robins out.

Leeds, last year, were the first team from the Elimination Quarter-Finals to win the Superleague Championship, I think.

We've got a race on with Wigan to try and hold on to the League Leaders' Shield, with Dragons snapping at our heels... all to play for in the next couple of months! I've lost track of what's been happening in the Scottish league, since East Lothian Hawks pulled out, but I think Edinburg finished top of the table again, and they're into the play-offs already, on the road to Wembley next year...

Are you having a posting holiday this week-end?

The Dragons Glaziers game was too late for me last noght, so I'm watching the repeat even as we speak; wtruggling to concentrate though, so the commentary may be a boit intermittent

Catalans 8 6 St helens, Catalans started with all the possession, but now 19 minutes gone. THe referee is giving a lot of penalties ... "The crowd here not slow to show their opinion for the referee"

St Helens knock on ten yards out

Posted (edited)

And St Helens leading 15 - 20 in Perpignan, twenty minutes to go, and Catalans have only lost once in Perpignan, this season, apparently (and another loss in Montpelier).

There'll be some tired legs in ten minutes... you might recall that catalans came from behind to win with a touch line conversion, back at Knowsley Road near the start of the season.

Oh my word - a long pass gests played at, knocked up in the air, Leon Price dives under it, out to Sebastien Ragun who runs and dives over the line, but the ball is deemed to have gone forward when it was launched skyward... Stil 15 - 20

And elsewhere, Widnes have hammered Salford for their first away win, after Salford humbled Warrington in their last Superleague outing

Catalans break, a high kick, fielded by Josh Jones on the try line, he falls and rolls over, the ball touches the turf, so St Helens kick out from their goal line. Stacul takes Catalans back to 20 metres out, on the scond tackle their over the ten metre line, but the St Helens defience holds out. Battieri charges and he's brought down a metre short, St Helens have to pat the kick dead, and Jon Wilkins is laid out, and Steve Menzies is coming back on the pitch to lend his experience.

And Pulutua is going to be penalised for a shoulder charge to the head; sent off - I think for the third replay, which looked worse than the rest...

Catalans playing against 12 men, but trailing 15 - 20

Seven minutes to go, atalans passing the ball back and forth, St Helens holding back but holding firm, a long cross-field kick, St helens try to pat it dead, ut Cardace dives on the bouncing ball to score, and could the game be decided by a last-minute conversion again?

NO! The try is disallowed for a push when the kick was fielded, five minutes to go, and the producer is trying to explain to the irate Catalan fans that the video referee is not in the commentary box... but the indominitable gauls are coming back again, this time the kick bounces, and St Helens field it... 200 seconds to go...

Dureau drops the ball on the second tackle, over-ambitious play from St Helens gives Catalans a scrum nine minutes from their own line

AND CATALANS HAVE DROPPED IT! So 12-man St Helens are pressurising the Catalans line. A drop goal goes wide, and Catalans have a final set of six... Cardace takes it up to the St helens 20, last play of the match, the kick, its too deep, Saints field the ball and take it up for the takcle, and that's it, St Helens win 20 - 15 in Perpignan.

The referee Ben Thaler is being given an escort off the pitch (no - like a police escort!); the video ref will be glad that he has managed to remain anonymous (there's no point speculating, as I am sure you all know by now...)

And at Barton on Irwell, Widnes have won 46 - 8 over hosts Salford, and Leeds have beaten Bradford, who stand on the brink of oblivion in the tender hands of the administrator

Tonight, London Broncos entertain Wigan, tomorrow our featured match will be Warrington at castleford, while Wakefield will be at West Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield.

The tie of the weekend, though, will be the Hull derby on Monday night. I'll not be watching live, but its on Astro again at 6 pm on Tuesday evening. I might watch in the pub below the office...

Here we are, sat listening to the commentary from the Stoop

"...its not really justice, describing it as defensive work, there hasn't really been any defensive work" and we've not reached five minutes yet and its London 0 - 6 Wigan from a Tomkins try that he converted himself. And now, five minutes into the game, Broncos get their first set of six; but Thierry Alibert says 'kneuck eun" and its a Wigan scrum.

And Josh Charnley scores "they're taking advantage of some woeful defending"

If there was a co-operative championship game on, I might switch to that.

At least its nice and sunny....

Another break for Wigan, Hock is brought down, "that should have been a certain six for Wigan, I've no idea why Hock did not pss to Tomkins on his shoulder"

Broncos are not making any progress at all "a laboured performance, this"

Chad Randall held up for Broncos and Wigan take possession on their 10-metre line

"They've got better as the game has gone on, London, but they started off poor, really really poor..." and apparently there's more Wigan fans at the Stoop than for the Broncos.

Broncos make it into the Wigan half for the first time, as the half time whistle draws near (albeit only from a dubious 'second set of six' after Gower's kick riccochets off a Wigan shin, but Wigan are coming back...

Edited by StreetCowboy
Posted (edited)

And Sam Tomkins scores his second try on the stroke of half time, and the conversion is not too difficult, midway between the touch line and the posts and his conversion makes it 16 -0

and Wigan start the second half the same way that they ended the first, with a try... 20 - 0 to Wigan

And Matty Smith scores his first try for Wigan Warriors, right underneath the posts, 26 - 0; if this carries on much longer, the game could soon be beyond London's reach...

Edited by StreetCowboy
Posted (edited)

Tomkins gets a hat-trick of tries, after Finch sidesteps, who's on his shoulder? Sam Tomkins!

32 - 0

And an injury to a Broncos player - Sarjenson, who leaves the field on a stretcher, and the Broncos restart quickly and scamper over for a Randall try, 38 - 6 to the visitors, 13 minutes to go

And Sam Tomkins scores his fourth underneath the sticks; chip kick, chased his own kick, controlled the possession, and scored right under the posts

And Wigan are cruising to a big win here, and Wiggens is cruising towards a win in the Tour de France.

Edited by StreetCowboy
Posted (edited)

And David Howell for Brocos spills a certain try, and Tomkins picks up the ball to bring it back for Wigan, with 80 seconds to go "well, it was almost laughable the way the Broncos failed to score there... it was laughable, absolutely laughable". 44 - 6 to Wigan

The majority of people are making their way out of the stadium, Tomkins puts the ball out of play in goal, and there's the hooter. Four tries for Sam Tomkins, eight tries in total for a 6 - 44 win to Wigan as the top side give the bottom side in superleague a straightforward drubbing

My apologies for the late start this evening, from outside the Gashaus, there's some pissed Japanese blokes making a racket inside, so I can't scarcely hear the commentary

Anyway, we're off for the highlight of the weekend, bar the Hull derby tomorrow night, and the race for 3rd place in Perpignan between Catalans and St helens, bar the Salford Widnes game... and its not the West Yorhkshire derby (Huddersfield leading Wakey 8 - 6 at half time, by the way)

Anyway, welcome to tonight's featured match - Warrington Wolves at Castleford Tigers, Warrington leading 12 - 0 after 20 minutes

No doubt some of you will be pleased, and others less so, to hear that England beat Scotland 48 - 14 in the Amatuer Four Nations at Falkirk, and Wales beat Ireland 28 - 26

,

Rangi Chase is proving a handful for Castleford

Bloody Chinese, shouting in the pub as well, I can scarcely hear Allan Rooney

And Warrington break to score under the posts; I need to get bigger speakers on the laptop... Castleord 0 - 18 Warrington, and now the internet link's playnig up...

Myler passes to Briers, who''s heading for the try-line, out to Westwood who scores

SC

My apologies if there's a few extra effs and cees transcibed into this match report, copie down from the pissed-up nips and chinks to either side - and the internet link dropping out as well....

And "Chris Reilly has just the full-back to beat, ... and that is a fatanstic try from a superb break" 0 - 30 to Warrington, and realistically, if Castleford are to turn this round, they're going to have to start scoring points.

For those of you more interested in the state of play at the Galpharm, David, ist Huddersfield 14 - 12 Wakefield

Edited by StreetCowboy
Posted (edited)

Oh my word, David, Wakey have had a shakey and taken the lead at the Galpharm - 14 - 20... must be about 20 minutes to go...

14 - 28....

They'll be dancing in the streets of Wakefield, if it carries on like this

and a Sykes drop goal, just in case...

And Castleford have scrambled their way onto the scorsheet 4 - 34 to Warrington

and a final try make it Huddersfield 14 - 35 Wakefield

Castleford break the length of the field to score, despite the attentions of Ryan Atkins

"He headed straight for the try line"

"He did EXACKLY THAT" and the kick comes over from the far touch line

Castleford 10 - 34 Warrington

So this defeat will see Castleford drop two points behind Wakefield in 12th place, unless there's a significant turn-around...

...Sensational handling skills by Rangi Chase, and I'm regretting opening my big mouth...

... CASTLEFORD 18 -WARRINGTON 34 (I can only hear the commentators in upper case, with these pissed Chinese blokes beside me)

Lee Mitchell's going to score, on that far side, and to be honest, Warrington have been lucky Rangi Chase had 12 other players to hold him back Castleford 26 - 34 Warrington, and suddenly, I'm struggling to explain the difference between confidence and arrogance

SC

Edited by StreetCowboy

Castleford 26 - 40 Warrington, and Tony Smith must have been relieved to see the 80 minute hooter turn red...

Huddersfield 14 - 35 Wakefield, and Wakey open up a two point lead in eleventh place over Castleford....

And on Monday night the HULL DERBY!

I'll not watch it live, though you chaps might choose to, Smokie, but I'll watch the replay on Tuesday evening

Missing smokie36, SC?

I can't believe he's gone to Thailand on the weekend of the Hull derby

Can't believe he's gone ... or can't believe he's gone without you?

Well, you join us with Hull FC leading Hulking Stonerovers 12 - 2 after 25 minutes of the repeat showing on Astro this evening. No doubt some amongst you may be tempted to check the score from last night...

I imagine Smokie and theBlether were listening live last night on the wireless...

The Blackandwhites are playing in blue, and the robins in white. Its a rought and tumble game; Tom Briscoe puts the ball down in the corner, but the whitewashed sideline is an inch too narrow...

And Hull FC kick a penalty to stretch their lead, with five minutes to go before the oranges

FC charge down a kick but HKR recover it 30 metres further back

Hull KR dart through, brought down, then a kick through; lackadaisical defending by the fullback lets Laithwaite (?) dive over the top of the full-back and ground the ball for HullKR's first try... 14 - 8... and they're lining up for a second, already, but the kick goes too far and FC take it from the 20 metre line

And up to the other end of the park, Brian McGoldrick kicks on the third tackle, follows through his own kick into Michael Dobson's arms, and KR kick out from under their posts...

Edited by StreetCowboy
Posted (edited)

Willie Manu is brought to one knee, but he shrugs off the tackle, passes to Kirk Yeaman and he scores; Jamie Foster adds two more points, to make it 20 - 8 in favour of FC

But there's still twenty-five minutes to go; you may recall that at the Magic Weekend, back in May in Manchester, KR came from behind to trump FC with a last-minute match-winning try... and sure enough, the Robins pull six points back with some hard straight running

AND HULLKR GET A THIRD "This is a different side from the first half" - that doesn't seem fair to me... Hodgeson launches himself at the last tackler and dives over the line to score; Jamie Foster misses the kick so FC hold on to a slender 2 point lead.

HKR - Michael Dobson - breaks half the length of the pitch, one pass - oh and its spilled forward!

And at the other end, Foster chases down the full-back as he gathers the kick, and brings him down behind his own posts; FC pressuring the KR line...

LIam Watts held by one ankle and he can't get the ball away, at the next tackle it spins out the opposite wing and Richard Whiting scores for the blackandwhites to extend their lead - 26 - 18. 13 minutes to go - Plenty of time to score two tries.

And again Hull KR are approaching the try line, Green kicks across with two men free on the wing , but the kick is too strong and bounces over the touch line. FC working the ball back up, a break over half way and Richard Hall loses the ball, McGoldrick penalised for a tackle round the neck and HKR have the ball 30 metres out

"There's no-one leaving this ground - anything could happen in the next six minutes"

Still 8 points the difference

A high Dobson kick lands in Hodgeson's arms, and he hacks it down the wing, but it bobbles into touch.

And Hull FC break, the ball gets passed out to the wing, then it comes back in to the middle for Tom Briscoe to score near the posts "absolutely sensational and you've got to pit this down to Danny Haughton the hooker"

Haughton kicks over, Richard Whiting gathers in-goal but the ball bounces off his chest and under his arms, and Hull KR take it out from the 20 metre mark with 90 seconds to go

And that's the way it ends - Hull KR 18 - 32 Hull FC; that takes Hull FC up to 6th place in the league, while Rovers sit in ninth place, outside the play-off places.

Great game, Smokie!

I've never been to a 'live' typecast ... this should be fun.

Should I heckle and snipe from the sidelines?

EDIT

Missed the 'live' bit by a minute!

Well, now I've seen everything! Tigers win a scrum against the head; the Rabbitohs scrum half threw it too hard against the number eight's feet, and it bounced out on the Tigers' side...

I suppose that's why League numbers from the full-back; so that the number eight is still number eight in a six man scrum..

They are quite clearly an abomination in the sight of the Lord, though, rugby league scrums...

SC

Well, you've caught me in a particularly bad mood, as the Radio Merseyside commentary is not working for either Warrington - Bradford (50 - 16) as it stands,or Widnes - Hull KR (20 - 28). I do have Hull - Salford on Rdio Humberside (26 - 22); Salford coming back from 24-12 at half time...

There's a bit of a ruckus, O'Mealy's sent to the bin, even though Hull FC get the penalty, and they kick the penalty to make it 28 - 22;

50 - 22 at Warrington, Widnes pull it bak (steady...) to 26 - 28

SC

Edited by StreetCowboy

My apologies, gentlemen; fatigue got the better of me last night, and I retired to bed with about ten minutes of the games to go.

No surprises, though, and Warrington, Hulland Hull KR came away winners. Later (much later) St Helens beat Huddersfield...

So Warrington still trail Wigan by three points and a massive goal difference in the race for the league leaders shield, and Hull KR bring up the last position of the play-offs, now that Bradford have been docked six points for entering administration.

Leeds play Wakefield tonight, but I'm off to see a Malaysia XI host Manchester City at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, in a roundball friendly. You may recall that last year, Chelsea avoided the ignominy of a goalless draw when the referee generously spared their blushes by awarding a goal for a brave effort by Didier Drogba that nearly crossed the line.

Any chance of a final score for the above game later tonight or tomorrow morning, as i'm not confidient if Wakefield can win 2 in a row!
