Cannot Use Msn

Neeranam

Recommended Posts

I used to have MSN messenger and msn as my homepage. I have windows XP.

Now I cannot use MSN messenger as it says that I must have put in the wrong password. I have tried various accounts but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Also check........

1. Most login data is "case sensative", therefore double check to make sure, the correct caps and/or lowercase characters are used when entering your username and password.

2. MSN Messenger v5.0 or later is now required to log into .NET Messenger or Windows Mesenger services. (More info here

good luck

I have just deleted the messenger i had and downloaded the new version, but still no.

I can't for some reason get the hotmail started, it comes up with "internet optimizernavigation error" and "You seem to want adult entertainment. Here is a free porn download: "

Your last post looks like a virus / spyware.

Time to install, update and run AVG, Spybot and Adaware.

And install a firewall so you stop getting this crap... i.e. Zonealarm - all of which are free.

As for your MSN password - if Outlook Express is still working, you can use a utility such as Password Reminder to read the password that Outlook has. (i.e. you possibly changed it, and forgot..., or someone else changed it as a prank. Any 15 year olds in the house...)

My password must be the same as I use it to get hotmail at internet cafes.

It must be some virus or something?

If it still works when you're at an Internet cafe - then it's time to go to an Internet cafe and change the password...

Any PC that is suggesting you go to porn sites has some spyware etc. on it - and if it's changing what you enter as a password, there is a distinct possibility it's being logged.

If you're not already running antivirus / firewall / etc. download and run the apps above.

One issue - with only 128Mb of RAM, running these in the background will probably slow down your PC a little more. (although probably less than the spyware you're almost certainly infected with).

Neeranam - Agree with bbk_mike that you have either a virus, a keylogger or most likely spyware.

The message your getting "internet optimizernavigation error" is hacker gobbledygook meaning "You ain't going anywhere except where I want you to go" (...that being my porno site.). :o

Suggest you run several of the online virus scanners such as Symantec, Trend Micro, McAfee, Panda or Kapersky Labs. If you have a virus, it is possible the virus may have disabled your installed virus/spyware scanners.

After doing the online scans, download those adware detection programs bkk_mike listed and run them. Disconnect from internet and DO NOT go online again until you have run the adware detection programs and rechecked your firewall settings.

For the benefit of everyone, would appreciate your posting back findings after scans.

good luck.

Sounds very much as though your homepage has been hi-jacked.

The reason that you cannot get into MSN on your home computer is that the site you are visiting on start-up is NOT MSN but a fake site. Everytime you visit they have all your log -In details and then re-direct you to a porn site (They earn money for each visit). You may have to run both Adaware and Spybot in "Safe-Mode" in order to clean it up.

As Previous posters have suggested, go to an Internet cafe, Log-On and change details, although expect quite a bit more spam now as they have a valid email address they can sell.

You can find out more about Browser Hi-Jacking at:

Cann you recommend one of the above?

Are they all much the same?

ALL of the above.

AVG is antivirus - i.e. Virus scanner, etc.

Adaware and Spybot are spyware finders - i.e. What you've got is either a virus or spyware. A virus is self-replicating, so will attempt to send to other PCs, spyware tends to be downloaded either inadvertently when downloading something else, or by the security holes in Internet Explorer if you go to the wrong website. (Pre XP SP2 anyway).

Zonealarm is a firewall, which will basically block external programs from accessing your PC (like the worms such as Slammer, etc.). It will also ask you when a program wants to use the internet if you want that program to have access. (You can tell it to remember the answer, so it won't ask each time you start up your browser, except when you've upgraded it...)

I use all of those myself. (and they are all free - so long as you stick to the basic versions of Zonealarm and AVG).

The last one is something that can supposedly read your password from Outlook express - but if, as you say, you remember your password, then you shouldn't need it.

The other thing you should do fairly regularly is go to Windows Update - and download the latest patches from Microsoft. - The Internet Explorer security issues used by viruses / worms etc. are often already fixed in a downloadable patch, it's just that not everyone will have installed it...

If you're on ADSL - all of the above shouldn't take too long. If you're on dialup, you might want to get someone else to do the downloads and burn them to CD for you.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me, Bkk_Mike. Sounds like great advice.

The annoying thing is that downloads take so long. As you say I can ask a friend with broadband to burn it. i think I understand now. Cheers.
